Comments And Questions Re: Jan/Feb 2010 Release

Thu Jan 28, 2010 8:05 pm

On 1/27/2010, a new release of the site's software was implemented. Users will encounter some differences as they navigate the site.

Please use this thread (rather than numerous individual ones which are popping up) to post your comments and/or questions regarding the release.

Comments And Questions Re: Jan/Feb 2010 Release

Thu Jan 28, 2010 8:17 pm

As I said in another thread, if the background image on the homepage is intended to be perminent, it needs a lot of work. Right now it makes the homepage look like a MySpace profile. I'd expect better graphical capabilities from a company like Demand Media.

It has been suggested it may have something to do with the one year anniversary of Paulo's death. Can we get some confirmation on the intentions regarding the homepage background?

Resolved.

Since the new look has come into effect, I can't seem to open compressed replies in the forums. If I click on such a reply nothing happens, so the only alternative is to refresh the page. The problem is happening in IE6, Chrome, and Firefox. Any ideas?

1) expanding posts is a known issue and will be fixed in the next release, in the mean time you can use "Show All" which works

2) the background image on the homepage is directly tied to the Anniversary of Paulo's passing. it will be reverted to the standard homepage at midnight

3) the feedback on the flags is acknowledged

Thu Jan 28, 2010 8:30 pm

I've already raised my two beefs in the "Bugs" thread - and had a response from a Moderator - but I'll point them out again here:

(i) The photos in my profile album have been replaced by the "photo default" image and I cannot delete them. I've tried several times.

The odd thing is that one of the photos still appears in a thread.

(ii) The collapsed posts issue. Even if I update my profile to "unlimited" views, nothing happens. I get a message - profile updated - but it isn't.

Thu Jan 28, 2010 8:30 pm

I liked the log in area on the response boxes. I prefer to just start on a post as opposed to having to log in first. This is the way it has been for a very long time, so if it ain't broke, why "fix" it and make us have to figure things out again?

Quoting Ming11 (Reply 4):

Will it be fixed though?

How long before that next release? The collapsed posts are a pretty major component of the forum, and it would suck to have it not functional for a while.

checkmark  With that, the homepage background, and the flag issue (which I entirely agree with), there seem to be a lot of "change for change's sake" updates in this latest round. Were people really complaining about these things beforehand?

Pasted from my locked thread:

I just noticed I'm now a "UK'er" not a "UK (England)'er", any reason for doing this? There was a big wait for them in the first place and we haven't had them all that long. I'm very proud of my English flag, and I hate the Union Jack.

Anybody else want them back? I certainly do.

I guess the official flag of the United Kingdom is the Union Jack so anything else would mean that other such territories could also demand flags.

Comments And Questions Re: Jan/Feb 2010 Release

Thu Jan 28, 2010 9:20 pm

We are targeting a fix release in a few hours. I will post a fix list once we are closer to the release.

High Level Priority Categorizations

1) broken functions preventing use of the site
e.g. unable to post, upload photos, crew tools, etc.

2) configuration functions that do not necessarily prevent usage of the site
e.g. minor user configurations and preferences that allow for ease of use but does not prevent posting, uploading, etc.

3) layout or visual errors/inconsistencies that have no material impact on function

Please understand these are very broad strokes and other considerations like level of effort and time to release also have an impact on whether a particular bug is in the next release.

Thanks

Flags are too glossy and blurry.. this is especially evident on flags with many details such as the Stars & Stripes or the Australian flag.. the Australian flag almost looks baby blue now.. not very nice!

When I click on a user's name to open their profile, it now opens in the same window/tab, rather than opening a new window/tab.

Maybe people like it that way, I don't know, but I think it was better previously.

It seems as though there are too few topics now on a page. Now I have to go to the next page to find where I was up to and previously that hadn't been the case.

The adding of photos to albums now comes up with "you must be logged in to use this feature" although I am and was also able to vote for photographer's choice.

There were a few other things I had in mind but have since disappeared..
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

There was never a problem before. There are 4 constituent countries to the UK and each have their own flag, so I don't see why they were even gotten rid of in the first place. There was a massive push to get them and now DM have decided to "improve" the site (without vote might I add, which each time has made it worse, personally) they've just gotten rid of them. It's not even because they were unpopular, because a lot of UK based users hoisted their own flag. It's not a bandwidth issue either, so they really have no excuse.

There's another one turned up for me.

The posts I composed after the site came back were on my chosen and preferred white background.

On someone's advice I deleted cookies to see if that would solve any of the bugs. It didn't, but now I am stuck with a blue background when composing posts.

if I click the little box, bottom left, to change the background, it doesn't do anything.

I have serious problems composing against the blue ground - I cannot see the cursor.

I wish I'd never deleted cookies now.

You must be checked-in to use this feature. Please click here to go to the check-in page.

No username? Come on, everyone with an aviation interest should have a username on Airliners.net!   Get one here

As a user of Airliners.net, you can save any of our photos in personal Photo Albums. For instance, call a photo album "Classic shots from LHR" where you save your favorite photos from our database taken at Heathrow airport during the 50's and 60's. Or call an album "My favorite 747 shots" where you collect the best Boeing 747 photos.

You can find photo albums created by other users in our very popular Photo Album section.

The developers have released a fix which should address some of the issues raised here;

- Individual posts in threads should now expand and hide
- Thread Titles that were missing from subject should now display
- Errors in creating new user albums should be fixed
- The 'Save Draft' function now works
- Premium and First Class sign up issues resolved
- Symbols in Thread titles display correctly now
- 'My Starred' topics can be marked
- Grandfathered users are able to post in the Site Related forum
- Forum index pages show the correct number of posts
- User photos display in profile page
- Flag scaling amended which should resolve the blurry flag issue

Indeed. I'm not going to bang my head till blood comes out my ears about it, or act like a brat about it, but I want the separate flags back. It was actually more effort to delete them than just leave them. I don't see the logic behind it. I will come out and say the "upgrade" has made it much worse. It's stable, which is more than can be said for previous updates but it looks dreadful.

Quoting N1120A (Reply 31):

Which is why they should have separate flags. You don't lump Scots in with the English, or with the Welsh or any other combination. They tend to be very patriotic about that.

Same for me.

I've tried to update my profile a dozen times, but no changes are shown when I check. I tried editing my signature - no luck.

But it is still that blue background for composing posts that bugs me most.

It seems as though there are too few topics now on a page. Now I have to go to the next page to find where I was up to and previously that hadn't been the case.

I just noticed the same thing. The first index page in the Civil Aviation Forum only covers threads with replies within the last 4 hours or so. Previously the first page usually included threads with replies within the last 24 hours or slightly less, but never less than about 15 or 16 hours even when activity was high.

Now, even the 2nd screen only goes up to about 18 hours of replies, so you have to go to the 3rd screen to access threads that often used to appear on the first screen. That's definitely a step backward and will make the site much less useful due to the lower activity in threads that are now bumped from the first screen. It's also a nuisance to have to keep clicking the newer/older threads link see what, until yesterday, you could see all on the same page.

I suggest this be fixed as threads that are on the 2nd page usually get far fewer replies, just like flights that don't appear on the first screen of airline reservations sites are much less likely to be booked. And some members probably don't even see the "Show older messages" link.

Paul,

I've experienced the same as Vikkyvik with FF 3.5.x, however not with IE7. Is there anyway you guys con make it FF compatible?

Thanks,

And, what about the flags of ex-members? they just show the A.net default image, not very nice... Any chance of reverting them back to the old blue flag, or maybe just not showing a flag altogether? (I must say, I do like the new spellcheck... Quciker and nicer, good job!)

Hello, I see you introduced new flags, but the one for Serbia is wrong.
The one you have now is the old flag of FR Yugoslavia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FR_Yugoslavia

The one for Serbia can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbia

Hope you can correct this and thanks!

Just tried with IE8, and it doesn't work, with and without the compatibility view.

There's a problem with the Spell Check that didn't exist until yesterday. When I click Check Spelling, the text to be checked no longer wraps within the text box. Instead, each paragraph becomes one long line extending to the right beyond the edge of the edit box, and if the text is long enoughk, the last part of the text disappears off the edge of the screen so you don't even see some of the text that may have spelling errors.

Just tried 3 orf 4 times in different threads to ensure it wasn't an isolated glitch and the sme problem occurred each time.

It seems as though there are too few topics now on a page.

Agreed , this is very annoying . Nearly as annoying as the compressed posts issue . From my point of view I see no enhancements compared to the previous version , only more defects .Why does it seem that this site actually deteriorates with each "upgrade" ?

Would love to have more threads per page on the forums again. It seems like there are fewer per page.

Edit: My preferences for the compressed thread views (IE not to compress posts) seems to have vanished.

I for one actually like the modified background even if it's only for a short time. It would be nice if Demand Media actually permanently changed the background from the long used solid blue to other designs.

I agree, especially on the civil aviation page the new addition rate is so high that after a few hours your comment is already listed under "older threads." Very annoying if you are responding to a topic with someone in a different time zone.

Check spelling feature is still not working ok. (expanded at the RH side of the box), very frustrating for the not native english speaking members.

Why don't you perform a "dry run" of the improved ??? software on a different sever, before updating the entire site, we feel like guinypigs. (is this decent english, unable to check with the spelling checker, etc..............
