Sick Of Pop-Ups

Thu Apr 04, 2013 1:46 pm

Even when I am logged in, every time I load up the site I am getting pop ups. On my computer it doesn't bother me as much because I have pop-up blockers running, but on my phone the ads load in a new window making me have to close the window and find the page i just loaded.Or the ads are embedded in the page and I have to find an X to close. Which on a phone is a pain in the ass. The most annoying is the pop up prompting me to download the A.net app. I have it, it sucks... The button to close the app pop-up is slow to respond, so after tapping it a few times, it disappears and recognizes my click to a link behind the pop-up taking me to a thread I had no interest in reading....

Which browser are you using? both on your phone and on your computer. I haven't ever gotten a pop-up unless I come from a google search, which is rare for me. I use the latest version of firefox and never had a problem.

Safari on my iPhone.

The pop-up from A.net is the most annoying/intrusive.

Hi Matt,

I'm sorry to hear about the inconvenience you are experiencing while visiting the site on your phone. We are aware of these results when visiting our website on a phone. Therefore we launched an App to replace the ''old fashioned way'' to visit the website. Currently our App only has basic info and options but the plans are to make the visit more comfortable with the App and offer more options such as forums, etc.

I'm not sure which browser you are using on your phone but it may vary with other browsers so if the situation allows it, I suggest to try with other browsers as well. Perhaps off topic but should you encounter inappropriate/shocking ads while visiting the site (mobile or not), do not hesitate to take a screenshot and send it to [email protected] We will look into this and try to delete it.

My apologies for the inconvenience, feel free to contact us again.

Kind regards,

Niek B.

One can't do anything with that app short of looking at some images. For many, the main interest of the site is the forums--and that isn't available on the app.

If you mean with ''some images'' over 2 million pictures, yes. Also you can comment on pictures. Like I said in my previous reply and you quoted the answer as well, we have plans to expand the app and launch posting in the forum options. Unfortunately I can not provide a release date for this.

Thanks and regards,

As a First Class member I don't have to worry about pop-up ads, but what's getting annoying is when visiting the site on my iphone, I keep getting a pop-up telling me to download the app. I HAVE THE APP! Would be nice if the site would stop telling me to get something I already have.

Why am I not using the app? Because I'm visiting the forums.

It seems like your site has been hacked by hackers targeting Safari iPad/phone users. I either get this pop-up thatthe OP is complaining about and now I am re-sent to app-store. Sometimes Pornographic pictures have appeared on my iPhone while trying to use Airliners.net with iPad. This must be hackers right? Porno pictures and resent to appstore to download crappy games cannot be by choice?

I've got adblock on Firefox and I still managed to get this stupid popup asking me if I belonged to some sort of dating website; which wouldn't go away until a button was clicked. And there was no alternative to not click anything, This is really starting to annoy me that it's appearing on my computer as well as my phone.

Hi all,

Thank you for your continuous reports on this matter. We are looking into including the forums in our app to make it easier to visit or use the website from your mobile device or tablet. Unfortunately, I can not share a definite release date. So it is possible but it will take time.

Regarding annoying pop-ups, we are looking into our pop-ups as we speak. Meanwhile I can only suggest to try out adblock and different browsers. I can not guarantee this will help, it might. Should you encounter vulgar and unacceptable advertisements, please make a screenshot and send it to [email protected] We will delete it.

Thank you for your continuous support and patience!

Kind regards,

I agree, this is a bit rediculous. If i visit on my iPhone, I get the large "app" pop up on my phone, and the only way to get back to scrolling through the forums is to click "x"...however, that triggers a whole new page being opened for ANOTHER pop up; it's unavoidable and at more intrusive than ANY other page I visit.

Considering this thread was started 3 months ago, it's clear they have no intentions on changing this, despit the complaints.

I, for one, definitely visit less often than i used to simply because its a sheer hassle to do so.

Noticed a large 2x4 tile area of ads by Taboola on the website now. Some aren't really all that appropriate. For those with AdBlock, just put in: ||taboolasyndication.com^$third-party under your manual filters to block them. Not sure if Pop Ups are coming from the same provider, but that should get rid of the remaining annoying ads.

I got something similar too when arriving from a Google web search, even with AdBlock Plus. When I clicked on "Learn More" I got:

The website you are visiting is using a survey, powered by Google, to enable access to its paid content. Answering a quick question here gives you immediate access to the content you want without having to pull out your wallet or sign in. These surveys contain questions written and provided by survey creators that want to conduct market research. The website you're visiting earns money from the surveys that appear. I agree 100% The pop ups and adds are getting out of hand. I too visit the site less in large part due to the inconvenience of using it on a tablet or phone.

The "get the app" add is the worst. There are other ways to advertise the app other than a horrible pop up.

Problem With Google And Airliners.net? (by dragon-wings Mar 29 2012 in Site Related)

Odd that both of you got it even with AdBlock Plus, as when this popped up last year, I had to disable AdBlock Plus in order to replicate what users were experiencing. You might want to see if there is an updated filter for it.

I am now getting a pain in the ass "floating" advertisement attached to the airliners.net page, and stays in the bottom left of the screen. It always "floats" back there regardless of scrolling the webpage. There is no option to close it either. Very annoying.

Please get rid of this annoying addition. I have a screenshot for you.

I'm pretty tired of the Slide Over ads that block the list of threads or comments.

I get MORE ADS now that I am a PAID FIRST CLASS... than when I was at the lower membership.

I don't understand this means of 'punishing' members that have paid good money. You won't get my FIRST CLASS Membership next year if you insist on all of the banners and slideovers.

Hi Admin/Mods,

Can you please explain how the adds work? Do you sell certain rights to random advertising companies to sell the advertising space?

Does it produce much income? I assume it does based on the amount that is there not to mention your acceptance of how ugly they all are.

I'm not sure if this site is a money machine or for whom but if it was my site I'd certainly care more for my customer experience than some uncontrollable adds.

Good morning Eugene,

Thank you for contacting us. Please take note that airliners.net generate income via memberships as well as advertisements.

Photographer-and Premium accounts automatically attract more advertisements due to no or cheaper membership fees. First class accounts (more expensive membership fees) attract virtually no advertisements, if any.

You always remain welcome to upgrade your account, based on your price sensitivity of course. More expensive memberships will always attract better membership perks.

I sincerely hope you find this explanation in order and continue to enjoy the website.

Regards,

Yes, its pretty tiresome. This is the only site EVER that I have paid to join, yet its the most ad infested site I regularly try to visit...try because the tablet experience is so miserable. The pop overs, side slide in ads just dont work properly (Samsung galaxy note 8" and galaxy S3 phone, anazon kindle fire HD). Find myself clicking away from here all too often.
and the ads are of very low quality and relevance. Weight loss scams and the like. Not a single ad for, say, booking a good fare on a major airline...

Are stupid pop up sliding ads worth donning the community name "Adliners.net" and chasing away some of your members?

IF that is the way that the owners now see fit to pursue, then so be it.

Hello there,

I'm sure this is been brought up before. In regards to the ad the still pops up for "Liking on Facebook" since I already do and it makes it a bugger to visit the site on a mobile device when it shows, can the powers that be create a opt-out that will "do not show again"?

I love this site with all my heart - but it would be nice to see to see our membership dues go toward making the site more technologically stable and modern.

I feel I must add my thoughts on this too. A.net has long enjoyed an image as a professional, highly-respected and authoritative aviation site. That entire image is threatened by the sheer tackiness of pop-ups, which are in themselves a phenomenon widely associated with the worse corners of the web.

PLEASE stop tarnishing the site's image with these awful things. Ads are fine, I accept them in light of the largely-free use of this site (aside from the initial fee), However, pop-ups are an infringement too far, damaging the user experience severely.

This site and all it stands for is worth more than this.

Get AdBlock plus. Pure and simple. No more pesky ads or pop ups. Even those "From around the web" ads that have appeared recently. Right click... Block... No more.

Thank you.

First, that's not an option for a good number of posts that all point to a singular core issue that Demand Media has yet to address: several members use a.net for the forums, which is not reliably or enjoyable deliverable to a mobile device.

Secondly, even if AdBlock and other extensions become eventually options for mobile browsing, how does using it actually solve anything? In effect, a.net's business model is predicated on revenue streams from two areas: advertisement and memberships. If adblockers become more prevalent, does that not push the burden to pay the bills onto Demand Media to insert more ads and potentially more sophisticated ads to avoid blockage?

That said, I find that the decision to push more ads in front of paid (albeit non-FC members) versus non-members to be nothing short of bizarre. The coffin corner that they find themselves in, then, is asking members to update to monthly FC memberships (without offering effective means to enjoy the merits of said membership, e.g. mobile forum app) or to downgrade or cancel memberships to be perpetually subject to more ads (that drove them away in the first place). In either case, existing customers - you know, the ones that gave a.net value to subscribe and contribute with photos and forum content! - are unhappy and effectively given the free market decision to stop using the service.

I have a hard time believing, then, that Demand Media has not done this calculus. As a result, what we, the user community (in however way you see fit to use a.net services) are being told - if only when reading between the lines - is that (1) the revenue is in the photos and (2) the cost is in the forums, People with the necessary coin to buy sophisticated equipment and the dedicated time to produce the beautiful photography are truly the target demographic. That's a fair and reasonable business decision.

I guess my point is, given that, don't pretend that forums - and the members who subscribe to them to read or contribute - are important while the user experience continues to erode over time with the proliferation of ads and/or the growing chasm between the legacy forum UI and more advanced community forum platforms available. Because while the photographers may pay the bills - which, again, is perfectly ok and well within your perrogative to conclude and capitalize on - forum members with an interest in aviation are [speculation] likely a little sharper than an average web-based community [/speculation], and simply want to be told what's going on so they may dedicate their time or monies more rationally when evaluating what value a.net forums bring.

That said, I hope this makes some sense, a.net, and that the allegiance generated within this community took years to build. I sincerely hope you can monetize that in some way. But if you're not, I guess what we're asking for is whether improving the forum experience, e.g. addressing this ad issue head on, materially advancing other means to use it, etc. is something worth sticking around for. My personal hope is that it is, but I, for one, would not be surprised or particularly off-put (beyond the current state of affairs with the prevailing tech limitations) if it is not.

Sincerely,
-Mike

I've almost completely stopped visiting on my phone because the experience is just lousy. The "Dowload OurWorthless Ap!" pop up scales larger than my full screen and it is hard to scroll to find the X to close. The slide over ads are just tacky.

I really understand that there must be ads, but the 'side slide' ad is really annoying... plus, makes my browser and navigation slower, too much javascript is bad for any website... hope you get rid of it soon!

I like your site very much, but this is making me visit it less often...

whine, whine, whine.. is it the sites fault some are too cheap to buy FC memberships, or that people expect to have 24/7 contact should they be bored with instant message free access? Honestly even on very active threads accessing 3 to 4 times a day is enough. But if you're just sitting in the can thumbing through pictures, maybe something else is missing although only a small percent are drooling over airplane pictures.

Whatever foil we can devise marketers will find a way around. They are working on locating your phone/device where ever and when ever to send customer specific ads based on your surfing ..

I've never had this issue on Chrome on the ipad. This has only shown up on the iPhone. It's why I never visit the site on my iPhone...but I did find a way around it. I set the forums as a bookmark and it's never popped up.

For the scope of my contributions, $15 is quite fine for my scale of membership. Paying every month is costly for the college kid.

And I deleted the Airliners app from both my phone and ipad. useless waste of space since my iPhone is crowded with over 3,000+ photos.

I would suggest that college kids and seniors on limited fixed incomes get a reduced rate... however that is difficult to monitor and most whiners probably have the funds judging from the cost of their electronic toys. Funny it is frequently those with the means the want everything for free and up to unreasonable expectations.

It's all very well just labeling it as 'whining' but many of us actually care about this site and it's image, whether or not we pay for first class membership. Nobody seems to be objecting to advertising per se - it's only reasonable that some decent revenue is generated from ads. It's the style of advertising and it's effect in devaluing the site that's the problem. If you want to drive users away from the site in the process, then using this style of advertising is completely self-defeating anyway.

I think what needs to be considered is long time members (10 years +) are puzzled why they are suddenly being inundated with pop-ups, slide-overs, banners, scrolls, noises and other crap not related whatsoever to the topic of the site. This degree of tackiness and annoyance has only become out of hand in the last year or so. Why was it possible for a.net to operate for so many years without having a hokey, cheesy appearance and not now?

And do not be fooled, you are paying for the bandwidth these java and flash ads consume, even though you may have no interest whatsoever in the latest gorilla suits available from the online animal suit store.

My two cents:

It is bad enough having banners around the content of the site, but get them off the content of the site. Some of the slide-overs are almost impossible to close, and clicking the wrong area can install who knows what on a user's computer. Twice I have had the FBI virus, and considering a.net is the only site I visit where I have to click on ads to get them out of the way to read the content, I have good suspicion one of the a.net slide-over ads was infected.

I frequently get an "add" telling me I was the 1 millionth visitor. Whoever pays Airliners.net for this "please come get our virus add" apparently recently decided to branch out, quite literally, from pop ups to side swiping adds that you can only partially get writ off. (see picture) Considering these low grade shady adds I wouldn't be surprised if one of those netted you a virus of sorts.

That a website requires adds to be able to pay the bills is understandable. But these types off low grade "adds" scream virus and give a seriously cheap image to what is, despite its add assault business model, an excellent aviation forum and photography site.

Perhaps the people in charge of getting the adds are not entirely aware of what it does to the user experience when you put up so many adds to users/members some of which even paid to contribute to your site. So in order to give them an idea allow me to describe my daily visit to airliners.net.

After typing in the sites address and hitting the enter key my browsers sets to work getting the site and making an attempt at stopping the first pop up adds from brightening my day. Despite my browsers best attempts it will fail miserably. The site will load with an add to the side of the days top photo's, fair enough so far so good. Then we will get a pop up on the bottom for the Facebook page and another add that slides in from the left. The Facebook add we can relieve off duty by clicking on the x. The sliding add on the left however will remain with us for the rest of our stay on the main page even after we click on the "hide add" button. (Btw that button is an insult to my intelligence as it is trying to sell a blatant lie. Clicking on the button will not hide the add it will just make it smaller as it moves over to the left.)

Now depending on some unknown variable I might now have to content with the "you are the 1 millionth visitor" pop up. If it doesn't show up immediately, don't despair it will show up when you dare click on something on the main page. If you are looking for problems feel free to click on it otherwise go for the x (this x actually works!)

Of course this is assuming we aren't on a mobile device because then we will also have to deal with the "get the app add" Good luck clicking your way past that one! Considering it is difficult to click away and members have been complaining about it for months it surprises me that it still ruins my day whenever I do get the audacity to visit the site on a mobile device.

After all of that we can enjoy the site with some adds to the left, the right and a couple adds per page we have to scroll past. Now that is fine and I can deal with, although their content isn't always very flattering at least they don't get in the way or require any action on my behalf.

Often I check the forums at work on a public computer so I don't always log in. If you don't log in and find yourself browsing through a thread or two be careful not to inadvertently move your mouse over a red and underlined word. Because if you do guess what? You get an add! These adds are equipped with an x looking type of button in top right hand corner. Sadly it is just a mirage, you can click all you want but that add isn't going anywhere. Well, you can move it or scroll past it but it will be there when you return to the top of the page. You might not have been interested in joining Groupon on the way down the page but who knows you might have changed your mind on your way back up the page. Thankfully mr addman is still there so you can click on the visit site button, which unlike the fake x button actually will work. (Sometimes I feel ambitious and still click on the x only to get disappointed that once again, the joke is on me)

Hopefully the above described account of a regular a.net visit will enlighten the staff and finally make them realize that all those adds (the get the app promotional add being the worst ,if nothing else at least kill that one) are not doing them any favors. Adds are fine but for the love of god be humane about it. An overflow of low quality adds is making the airliners.net experience cheap, painful and is affecting the number of daily visitors.

I visit a lot of websites but I can honestly say this site gives me the worst experience off them all. And to add insult to injury this is the only site I have ever paid for to be a member.

I would strongly urge the powers at be to listen to the above mentioned posts and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

That might work, but don't you think it is a little sad that you need third party software in order to be able to enjoy a site you paid for to be a member?

I'm sorry, but all this site has to offer is user generated content. If they were paying writers and photographers that might be justifiable, but they aren't so it isn't.

Finally did it. I can chose to disable for a specific site, but is it possible to enable for a specific site? I don't want to rob other sites of revenue.

Just wanted to add that while running chrome on an iPad, I've gotten a pornographic pop up on a.net tonight. Most pop ups are just annoying, but this sort of ad is too much.
