Could someone recommend a decent ad-blocker to get rid of these goddamn highlighted words? These scripts keep crashing my Netscape Navigator.

I'm using safari so I'm not sure it will work for you, however I block ads with Adblock Plus and have followed indications provided in reply 255 of previous thread to solve the blue words problem.

Hi Wilco. I just want to say that you're latest posts indicate that you are as fed up with the situation as we are.

I personally wouldn't like to be in your position with all the 'aggro' that is happening at the moment.

A would like to thank you for replying to these posts and being honest.

Yes, the situation is difficult and we try to please both sides. I can understand the frustration of the community and I feel sorry for a.net. It is simply a unique website and many love it and visit it many times a day.

Let's hope for the best.

Thanks again.

This blue highlight issue has got to go. It is beyond annoying and hard to read.

On a side note, when I clicked on the Site Related link, it took me to this Ebay page:

What is going on here?

The blue adds are not only hard to read, they contain malware a well.

Also noticed that since the blue adds appeared this website has become a lot slower to load, particularly when browsing on my tablet or phone.

I added intextdirect.com to my AdBlock filter settings, and so far, so good.

It's shameful and unacceptable, however, that Demand Media does not plan on removing the blue ads for its paying membership. I mean, if they're replacing the previous red-underlined ads (which I never see because of AdBlock), I would think they could be applied with the same filters.

I really feel sorry for everyone in the A.net community, and especially our moderators. It's a shame that a better ownership team couldn't have been located when Johan sold the site several years ago; I cannot help but think that this website would have been better off with an ownership team who not only had the technical background to not only keep the site operating, but to help it operate better, but also have a genuine interest in the community and a sense of standards and quality with regards to the type of advertising being featured on the website.

I *will* give Demand Media credit for making A.net an overall more stable website since taking ownership, but allowing more intrusive advertising does nothing but to ruin the user experience.

It almost wants to make you start a Kickstarter campaign so the community could crowdsource the funding to buy out the site.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

Maybe the community should go to Group that runs Airways magazine and airchive. They are a great media company.

Regarding the blue underlines, the previous suggestion does seem to work, for me at least:

Just do what I did.

Bring up a pop-up window, click on the question mark, select "opt out" and bingo ... the blue underlines are gone.

My only concern with that is that it involves installing a cookie from these guys. If they're going to produce such annoying adverts, what will they do with a cookie?

AdBlock works great.

It eliminates not only the obnoxious underlines, but all the other ads that slowed down the board.

Now if I only had a similar solution for my iphone.

Banner Ads, yes, but not these text ads. When DM first put these ads on the site, there was a uproar and management assured us that all logged in PMs and FCMs would not see text ads. The current action goes completely against that.

Remove them now.

What I find absolutely unforgiving and intolerable of Demand Media is that they do not even vet the ads that they are pushing on this website. They actually are allowing ads that are clearly malicious as shown by this screen capture.

When I can no longer feel confident that visiting the A.net website won't infect my computer that is a VERY SAD state of affairs. For Shame on Demand Media!!!!

Yup. It rather unfortunate that their isn't a better alternative at the moment. If there was I'm sure a whole lot of us would've cancelled our membership by now.

I don't know if this has been addressed by the previous 7 threads (I'm not going through each one) but two bugs I've noticed:

1. Forum searches don't work after 2010. Search results won't show me anything after that.

2. Advanced Search for photos on the homepage doesn't appear to be working. I searched up "Cargo Airlines" from the "category" drop box and "Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport" from the "Country/Airport" drop box and clicked search and it wouldn't show me any photos.

Frustrating!

That's untrue. Demand Media said that no Premium or FC Member would see livetext ads if signed in. Last I checked, they still own the site, so abiding by such promises that we relied on would be natural

What Wilco said was not untrue. As noted that was said by previous management since passed away and new managers are in place who make the decisions. They were not even employed by Demand Media at the time and as I've previously indicated they have stated they will not remove them at this point in time.

If they are going to continue to ignore their paying users and subject us to these intrusive and annoying blue underlined links to nothing even remotely related to aviation, can they at least change the bloody colour of them then? The dark blue text on a slight less dark blue box is really hard to read. Who was the web developer and the quality control manager who put their stamp of approval on that piece of work?!?

Thats OK, it just drives more of their audience to use ad blockers to make the experience here better, vastly reducing the revenue stream rather than increasing it...

There are so many issues with this website its unbelievable - I can real off dozens of problems that have plagued this place since I first joined back in 2003. None of the owners of A.net have actually given a damn about the user base, but Demand Media have taken it to a whole new low.

First they upset the mobile people by having ridiculous hovering ads that broke fundamental page functionality, then they start with pop ups, pop unders, and unsuitable ads which are somehow "hard to remove" despite being added overnight - people, its a website, it takes a minute at most to sort out your ad providers and what ads are displayed. The moment you say it takes any longer than that to get rid of unsavoury ads, the technical people among us know you are flat out lying. The fact that the pop up/under stuff went on for a couple of weeks was embarrassing to say the least, it should have been solved within minutes of the crew being told it would be solved, not weeks after.

What Demand Media basically outright implied when they took weeks to resolve the pop up/under issue can be taken as one of two things: "we dont actually care that this is damaging the community view of us" or "we actually have no control over what content third parties deliver through our website".

The first implication is bad enough, the second is much worse - it implies that Demand Media have no way of stopping an ad provider from delivering malicious adverts in any sensible time period. It implies that they have no problem with ad providers showing child porn on these pages for weeks at a time.

And now we have highlighted textual ads, done in such a way that its causing issues among the user base, and again Demand Media don't care.

So why should we care about Demand Media - the moral of the story is install an ad blocker and be done with it. No more problems caused by DM that way. It takes an awful lot for me to block ads on a website, as I fundamentally believe in the tenets of fair exchange, but DM have broken their side of the exchange by treating their user base as badly as they have.

The more I learn about Demand Media, the more I think they are a terrible company. I find it very sad that A.net is being held hostage by them. Right now I'm waiting to see how all these ads play out, but I've already joined other websites and have put a halt on all future photo uploads here. If I'm going to let a website host my work, they better display it in a respectful manner, and that means not turning the words I type in the remarks field into ads. I can't help but look back and now say "you were right" to all those who were skeptical about a DM take over of this site.

Regarding the blue underlining, in Chrome I tried to block certain sites from using Java, to no avail, but if I block all Java then the blue stuff disappears. So the quest is now on which site the Java originates.

Edit: it is (surprise surprise!) www.airliners.net but initially I had only written airliners.net which does not give the desired effect. Happy surfing!

Well, that first bit seems a bit cold.

Again, the out and out promise made to the community at the time livetext ads were added to the site is that logged in Premium and FC members would not see them. Nothing was done to indicate that changed and no one was given the opportunity to opt out of said structure.

It seems rather obvious that the attitude of DM towards complaints regarding ads, as passed on by Paul (through, one must assume, no fault of his own), is officially "Buy First Class or STFU."

I object entirely to paying additional to upgrade a service when the prior service level was intentionally degraded to force this choice. I also object to needing to download an ad blocker to view what is essentially a text-based site (the forums). Because of the underlined text issue, the forums are now essentially inoperable on a mobile device.

While a.net is unusual in its union of a strong photographer and strong forum base, there are multiple competing sites that have one of the two. By undermining the strength of either side of the business, DM is killing their own value proposition. Indeed, they seem to be undermining both, as both photographers and forum contributors are threatening to leave.

That's a shame, but if you're a premium or photo member and you don't have recurring payments, DM seems to think you're nothing but a set of bovine eyes for ad content. Further, they realize they're not going to get any money out of you - unless they somehow badger you into paying for First Class. Their position is clear, so the ball is now in each user's court.

I am getting so SICK AND TIRED of having pop-up MALICIOUS WEBSITES appear whenever I visit the A.net website. It's not when I first log-in, but when I switch forums that this popup appears.

Surely we can expect more from Demand Media than a continual stream of MALICIOUS WEBSITES trying to infect our systems when we visit the A.net Forums.

This MUST STOP!!!!!

So I recently returned to browse my favorite aviation site here after a 6-month hiatus, and all I can say is, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED HERE?! The ads on this site have become so spammy!

After reading through this thread, I see this experience is not unique to me.

On other sites around the web, my good conscience and better web design have pushed me away from using ad blockers, but since A.net seems to be stuck in the internet dark ages, I've had to keep AdBlock on for this site.

It's a shame. I've considered upgrading to a FC membership to support the site, but the site runners don't seem to be making any real improvements to the site. While other aviation sites are constantly working to make their sites better (and more mobile friendly), A.net hasn't changed one bit since I joined ten years ago.

Still love the community on here though. Nothing can replace that.

RE: Report The Bugs Here (Part 8)

Hi!

I'm having real problems posting my newest Trip Report. When I reply to a post normally, or just try and post a small amount of text (up to around 500 words), everything is fine, I can see the preview, and it posts fine. However, when the post gets much longer (and my trip reports are a few thousand words, plus pictures) and I press "Preview post", the next page just goes blank.

I've tried posting on Mozilla, Chrome and even IE, all with the same result, and the issue has been persisting for at least 2 weeks. I've posted hundreds of reports over the years, and never had this issue before.

Any ideas?

Thanks

That is true. Long posts do not show up completely. There is a limit on how long a post can be. What that limit is? Nobody knows that...
So, most people make several posts, like splitting it in part 1/2/3 etc. And that works fine.

Sorry about that.

Until very recently A.net was not part of the reason why I have AdBlock installed on my computer.

Hi Wilco

I know that you can't post very long threads without it cutting offsomewhere, but it always at least shows in the preview. When I post even 1000 words (which is very short for a trip report) the preview page just doesn't load at all. My last report ran to 5,600 words, and I had no problems.

This is not normal in my experience. Is it just my computer, or the website?

If I try to post the same stuff on Flyertalk, everything shows as normal in the preview.

Hmm, good question. that was the only idea I had that your posts were too long. But what happened here, I don't know, sorry.

Since Demand Media doesn't want to respond to us directly on the forum... hope they will respond here:

Hi Plainplane,

While I agree that DM have yet to respond here even though they've been reading it I'm not too sure whether they'll respond to you there either as that's a totally different part of DM compared to those who manage the site.

Where you, and others, can really assist us is to provide screenshots or links to any advertisements that remotely look like malware so we can have them removed. If you come across one please send it to me at [email protected] and it will be removed or blocked. The URL is what I really need to do this.

I thank you all in advance for your assistance as I'm sure you want to see them gone just as much as I do.

Thanks and regards

Paul

Not sure if it's just me or something, but it looks like the view counter for photos is currently not working?

Edited: Nevermind, seems to be ok now, sorry.
