Video Adverts

Sat Mar 21, 2015 6:00 am

The site has reached a new low.

We have a video between the box to write a thread and pressing preview and at the bottom of the first post

It is more and difficult to read this forum.

And it's on the photo pages too. A new low indeed.

The mods obviously cannot remove such ads, but that doesn't explain why they feel the need to close the other thread and other threads which only express a genuine concern about the future of this website.

Agree - that video ad is annoying as anything that I've ever seen. I understand the need for ads, but not when it blocks access to the content.

Totally agree. Every single photo page load the video pops up. Surely there is a more user friendly location that placement of the ad could be made. While we know you need to make some money from ads, you won't do yourselves any favors by driving away your loyal users by poor ad placement.

It's so annoying if I'm viewing the forum on my phone while listening to music and then the video ads pop up and interrupt my reading and my music! I swear if I see Demi Lovato one more time I'm gonna go through the roof.

One of the main reasons I don't visit A.net anymore is because of the loud, obnoxious advertising. Like this Ragu video ad on top of a picture: http://i.imgur.com/THPnRLZ.png

That's why, at least on the desktop (the site is so hard to use on mobile I never even try), I've got an ad blocker and Flash turned off for this site. Solves 99% of the issues, and what it doesn't catch I black list.

The video adverts are despicable. God protect the person that forgot to turn off their computer volume. Incredibly annoying and continues to reduce the enjoyment factor of this website.

Had not one, but two video ads going on a single page today.

It boggles the mind how anyone can agree to put these ads on a site - it's not like there's a certain segment of the viewing public that doesn't mind them.

My patience is running low with this site. It's turning into a shambles.

Literally the only thing Demand Media is still interested in with regards to a.net is finding new and exciting ways of cramming even more, and ever more intrusive ads onto this website.

Back in the day, before they took over the site, there were constant updates and improvements. Ever since they took over, the improvements came to a grinding halt almost overnight. The only time we see a change is when they've managed to find another place to stuff an ad into.

DM doesn't give a damn about this site, or its members.

We were warned about this when DM took over and now it has come to pass. I too hate these ads and as a result I visit A.Net less and less each day, week, month...There are any number of sites in which one can get the latest aviation/airline news and high quality photos without being bombarded with video ads or being coerced into an overpriced membership. I have been a member of these the forums from day 1 and while I will endure these ads for a while, my days of being an active member are likely numbered.

Johan certainly had his flaws, but he kept the site up to speed and showed respect and concern for members.

Can't take the video adds. They make the threads load slow and clumpy very very annoying. And looking at pictures? Forget it! Just makes me not want to click on anything anymore. Counterproductive.

Christ, they went away for a few months, and now they're back.

Completely obnoxious.

Demand Media, wtf!
Please do remove video ads. Who would click on a camping advert when they are trying to view an aviation photo?

This has gotten really agitating. EVERY TIME I open a thread that damned video ad slides in. I normally would not complain if this was a free membership, but it's not.

Every thread, every search, every photo, these video ads are out of control. Even on my own photos, the advertisements are COVERING THE PICTURES and for this reason I have completely stopped uploading and will not resume until this is stopped. We need an official response to this thread.

EDIT: Also removing the dedication to Paulo Emanuele from the home page is an absolutely tasteless decision.

If you hate the ads as much as you all say you do, there is a very easy, safe, and 100% legal way to block the ads on your browser. If you use Safari and I'm pretty sure Internet Explorer, this won't work, so I suggest switching to Firefox or Chrome (they're both free and work well on both Windows and OS X). Once you have Firefox, click on the menu in the upper right hand corner, and when the menu appears, click on add ons:

Then search Addblock plus and install it. This will take less than one minute. When done, you will see this:

Once you have Addblock plus installed, you will never see anymore popup adds on a.net, or anywhere else on the web for that matter.

The video popups over the photos are so annoying that I downloaded AdBlock Plus, so I don't have to see any of airliners.net's ads. Good job guys!

AdBlock is great and all, but what about those people who are coming here for the first time, or trying to find a photo to use (with permission) for a project, book of presentation? Yes, we who use the site often can block these ads, but the site looks very unprofessional to the new user. I hate pop ups, and if I found this site today instead of 15 years ago, I wouldn't come back for a 2nd look.
