Spam Email Sent Through The A.net Mail Interface

Tue Jun 09, 2015 12:33 am

Hi!

Just got the following spam email sent through the Airliners.net Email Interface from a Richester Abel ([email protected]):

Quote:
Hi ,
Greeting ,
My name is Richester Abel, a NATO Soldier; I am serving in Afghanistan. I saw your contact on airliners site. Please I want to discuss something very confidential with you for our mutual benefit.
Richester

When sending, a CAPTCHA confirmation must be entered, so either the interface is hackable, or someone took the trouble to manually send the spam message.

Pssssttt! As Mr. Abel said, this is very confidential, so don't tell anyone...

I also got the email from "Miss Jeniba" early this morning. I assume the matter she wants to discuss involves moving a large sum of money from Nigeria.

I'll go ahead and post the email here:

Dear friend,

Greetings,

Quote:
Let me introduce myself, I am Richester Abel, an American soldier; I am serving in Afghanistan. I am 40years old , single parent. I was assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) in Fort Bragg, N.C. I was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, my first deployment to Afghanistan. I previously served in Iraq.

I was enlisted as an infantryman in the U.S. Army in October 1996, completing my initial entry training at Fort Benning, Ga. My first assignment was with the 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, at Fort Lewis, Wash.

While serving as a scout with the 1st Cavalry Regiment., I was deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005. Upon my return, I volunteered for Special Forces Assessment and Selection.

I started my Special Force training in March 2006 and earned my Red Beret in 2008 when I graduated as a Special Forces Communication Captain. I arrived to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), in August 2010 and was assigned to Company C.

My military education includes basic combat training, the basic airborne course, the warrior leader's course, the advanced leader's course, the survival, evasion, resistance and escape course and the special forces qualification course.

You know we are being attacked by insurgents everyday and car bombs.During our last rescue mission at Kandahar , we came across a trunk box that contains Huge amount of money that belongs to the revolutionaries which I believe they use in buying weapons and ammunition, and it was agreed by all Military top officer's party present that the money will be shared amongst us.

Out of the total fund my share was $9,500,000.00 (Nine Million five hundred thousand US dollars), and I am seeking your assistance to receive/invest the funds in your country in any profitable business, in as much as you can assure me that the money will be used properly until I complete my service here. This is no stolen money, and there are no dangers involved.

We are five military officers who shared the funds each, it is a kind of benefit to us in war zone. If you agree to accept my offer,I'll talk to those of my comrades so that we can jointly invest the total funds the sum of $47,500.000.00 ( Forty Seven
million five hundred thousand United States dollars) ,through you. I want to assure you that this transaction is 100% risk free and movement of funds to you will be confidential that nobody will break the law. Think about it and get back to me for more details. But you must keep all information between you and I alone.

Now Real Estate business is growing rapidly , i decided to contact you for investment partnership. If Real Estate business is not profitable enough and you have Knowledge of business in the following sectors: Real Estate, Tourism, Stock speculation, Film Industries, Mining, Oil, Transportation and Tobacco or a solid background and idea of making good profit in any business, we can invest the funds.

I do not know for how long we will remain here in Kabul Afghanistan , and I have survived two suicide bomb attacks, which prompted me to reach out for help. Please if this proposal is acceptable by you, kindly respond back to me and we shall discuss about the conditions and terms.

Thanks and waiting to hear from you
Richester

Hi there,

This is being sent from the contact form if you have your profile set to accept messages from all. It's just that the wording of the message then makes it look like it came from a user when it actually didn't. I admit it's a little confusing but we can't stop this person from doing what they are and having it appear as though it's coming from a user when it's not.

Hope that clarifies and sorry you're getting the emails

Regards

Paul

Captcha confirmations have been easily broken for a while now, you shouldn't rely on them to protect web forms these days.

I just got this one today:

Quote:
Miss Elisabeth kone
My dear.

Good morning and as you do, I hope well.

It is my pleasure to contact you for a business venture which I intend to
establish with you in your country, though not met before, but one
You have to believe in someone to succeed.

I'm 20 years old and the only daughter of my father, Late Mr & Mrs Smart
Kone, a native of Bouna, Republic of the Ivory Coast or (Ivory Coast). Because
the ongoing civil war series in my country for several years ago,
there is this huge amount of eight million, five hundred thousand US
dollars (US $ 8.500,000.00) which my late father deposited in finance firm
Ivory Coast here before he was murdered by some unknown enemies.

Now I decided to invest this money in your country or anywhere safe place
enough for security and political reasons. I ask you to help me to invest
this fund in your country in any lucrative venture.

Now let me ask a few questions: -

1. Can you honestly help me as your friend or family member?
2. Can I completely trust you?
3. You can have me a good school for the continuation of my education
Carrier, which was interrupted by the sudden death of my parents?

If you can be an honest and sincere care for me, I'll be satisfied
to offer you 15% of the total fund for their help and human.

More details will be made known to you upon confirmation of your
interest to help me.

I am immensely waiting for your urgent response
With due regards,

There is a Captcha but obviously that is not enough. Those are from non members and the only way to get rid of them is by disallowing Photo Email messages in the Photographers Corner.

Is this really an acceptable solution? Everyone I know on this site (include those with very few photos here) has been receiving these messages the past few days. I got 10 just today alone. Shouldn't the hole be plugged rather than just turning off my messaging capability?

I wish there was a Captcha based on Airliners images like What aircraft family is this, what's the first name of the photographer etc. On my forum I removed the captcha and required an answer to an easy question, "what are the runwsy numbers for mmx main runway?" Haven't received any spam messages or spam users on three years.
