Can New Members Still Join The Forums?

Thu Apr 14, 2016 7:01 pm

Is there any way for new members to join the Airliners.net forum?

A friend tried to join and claims that he cannot get anything more than a photographer account. There is no way to upgrade to a Premium Membership to allow him to post.

What a way to kill a forum if new people can't join.

Ask your friend to email support from the email account used to register.

Support should be able to assist as they were when I had exactly the same problem.

So someone cannot participate on the normal (aviation) forums without a special email to support?

What a way to kill then forums if new members cannot easily join  . I appreciate that they may be upgraded for free but the priority should be on an easy and quick membership....

Been here since 1999 but this is sad to watch!

Its only till the joining membership part is upgraded as part of the site wide upgrade.

Testing of the new system/web-site is scheduled to start in the next few days with the Head Crew being the testers

I've been hearing about this since 2010, I think.

Do I need to say what year it is now?

I would urge the administrators of the site to reconsider, and make it as easy as possible for new members to participate (even if they will later have to be moved to the new service). I may be making assumptions but I assume very few people will bother sending a specific email to site admin.

By severely slowing the flow of new members, you are damaging the quality and quantity of contributions.

No offence 777ER (I understand that you are the messenger and you don't deserve to have shots fired at you) but I would bet big money, based on past promises and performance, that no site upgrade will take place for many, many months - at best.

I understand why Johan needed to get out of A.net but is hard to argue that the involvement of Demand Media has been anything other that a catastrophe for this site.

I think this has gone way overboard turning every single topic in site related into the same tirade against DM. The upgrade is coming, when is secondary, enjoy what's here now. That email saves you 25 dollars, and you complain that it's too hard?

This topic was by no means a tirade against DM but a plea to your team to save the forums. Like most here, I had no idea new members could not automatically join until I was discussing the website with a friend who mentioned he could only access the photography sections.

In all honesty, how many emails a day do you get from people? Thinking about it, I have seen very few new members participate in the forums. I would say that's a shame because like any community, Airliners.net needs a constant stream of new people to stay dynamic.

Teahan, we are changing it. You didn't get automatic access before either, you had to pay to be able to post otside photography forum. Now you can get it for free by simply sending us an email, and that's not a good thing? If sending an email is too much then the only option is to wait for the new site roll out. We will not mass update our user database in the midst of a huge overhaul.

The question is, do prospective new members KNOW that they have to email someone to join the forums?

I bet plenty of existing members didn't know that (myself included).

Is that posted anywhere? How would a prospective new member know to send you an email? There should be a notice posted at the top of the forums to let people know that.

You didn't get automatic access but the information on how to get posting privileges was clearly presented (the benefits of upgrading). I might be wrong but based on what I heard from my friend, nowadays no information at all is now presented on how to gain normal forum access.

Having been involved in running a few online communities, people will not bother to jump through extra steps. They will try to register and if it doesn't get them what they want, they will simply move on without thinking that they can email support. This is also why many iOS/Android apps try to "onboard" users without an initial compulsory registration.

If sending an email really is not an issue, perhaps you could share information on how many additional forum members, with access to the aviation forums, we are seeing every day? I get the feeling it's not very many.

Finally, without knowing the settings available within the forum, surely it would be possible to grant new members full forum rights without making a big change to the site configuration?

This forum was built by Johan, the former owner and operator of the website. It's not an "off the shelf" forum software. Given that it was custom built, it is not as easy as just toggling a setting box. It would require a lengthy rewrite of the code.

The Head Crew are now testing the new site after a set back last month delayed testing, but yes there is still a few more months to go before all the nuts and bolts are firmly set after feedback has been given

OK, I freely admit that I am not a software person, but I think the website changed owners in July 2008 (or thereabouts?)

It's now April 2016.

After nearly 8 years I would have thought that the site might have been debugged by now.

I had some of the problems listed above, but after sending an email, i was able to obtain access in less than a day.

No need for comments like that, we do it manually, and we are not on duty every second of the day.
