I concur with the criticism of the contrast. But, ok, I suppose many things will evolve in the next days.

Sorry that we seem to have lost most of the wonderful emoticons of the web.

Agreed! There is (was) something very nice and special about that "A.net blue" and being able to choose it. I hope they add that choice back (they appear to be making changes and updates on the fly currently which if that is happening that is most definitely a big improvement).

And your comment about the Username prominence, I honestly think they should "flip" the thread title header style with the Username. I.e. make the Username the size and font currently used for the thread title in a members reply and put the thread title below in small lettering (as I said before:
Do we really need the thread title in big letters atop every reply through the thread?

And lastly I really miss the "collapse reply" and "skip to the last read" feature. Especially on mobile it is a huge benefit.

I took a moment to update my outdated email in my profile, but the emailed link that arrived in my inbox brings me to a 500 Server Error on the site.

Nope, they don't work for me linked wise like the old site. I really miss the whole really dense showing tons of threads I could skim thru visually, I really hope that gets fixed. This site feels now like it was meant just for cell phone access unfortunately. They could of done a m.airliners.net and have a 'for mobile' web interface and kept the old data heavy desktop interface. I had zero issues with the website at all for years of lurking, don't understand the issues that caused this radical change.

What made a.net so unique was its quirkiness. But: you could figure out the "mood" on the forum within about 60 seconds. That's all it took to scan over the titles and newsworthy stuff.
Now???
Lord have mercy. This is rough man. Rough.
And so much wasted space. So much scrolling.
The old was never an issue on my iPhone either. Just enlarged the screen.
Bad. Bad. Bad.

Gone at the moment. I've added it to the to-do/wishlist.

Regarding the blue color; I mentioned earlier that it's on the wishlist. I'm confident they can add more blue and with that also increase readability. So please bear with me for that.

I'm not disappointed because the site looks different (and WOW does it look different  ), I understand that the site "needed" some updates. That being said, I wish the site maintained its former functionality. That should have been the aim of the revamp--to give the site a new look, while maintaining full functionality.

There are SO MANY features missing:
1. Search box on home page
2. Pictures opening in separate tab
3. Being able to add pictures to albums from the search results page
4. Airport/airline info boxes in forums
5. Being able to choose how large to view the picture (i.e. medium, large, fit screen)
6. Being able to view the next search result by clicking on the thumbnail on a picture's page
7. Viewing photographer's top photos easily on a picture's page
And more...

Lastly, the website just seems so much more cluttered now. Everything takes up more space and this impacts the usability and user experience.

I don't care about forums and stuff, but this awful page of photo, with broken aspect ratio and with arrows which scale photo to fit screen breaking it's aspect even more - like on cheap TV set...

Do we need some crossbreeding between faecesbook and flickr?

Sorry to be the one to point this out but this new design is very hard to read, the layout is confusing and there appears to be no more chat room. One of the reasons I joined was to use the live chat and while it was not that active, I did meet a few friends on there. Oh well, I guess I will be chatting on Skype and not using this site that much anymore. Too bad!

The problems I see are:

1. Forums are very bright, and there is far too much wasted space.

2. Why do we need to click on "Search" on a photo search website. That should be part of the homepage, and not sidelined.

3. The Photo Index page is almost useless now. You are not able to scroll through the list alphabetically. There is only page after page of entries, and no way to search through it. When you have selected an Aircraft, and then Variation, there is no ability to specify particular airlines. When selecting Airlines, there is only 1 photo representation of each generic type.

I see no advantages to the new website, and have comfortably used the previous site for 17 years.

A new web site is quite the task for any organization, so I'm happy considering the magnitude of the project. I accept change and do so any value in providing negative comments on such a large project which obviously will be work in progress.

My initial observation mirrors what so many other have noted, the overbearing white space provides a washed out look to what should be a fresh appearance. Perhaps in time the blues can be enhanced to cut down on the white washed out look of the package.

Thanks for the effort to improve the site and good luck with future modifications.

I'm a frequent visitor of airliners.net since the late 90's, and I've always loved the site for it's design.
Never posted a photograph, but used the forum on a daily basis for more than 15 years.

The changes to the forum is in any aspect horrific.
It's always been the easiest forum to navigate online, but now it's just a generic forum layout, used by a load of other sites.
The best option in the old forum, was the ability to "scan" the posts, for example in an accident thread. I dont want to read a hundreds of posts from people with obscure theories, I just want to read the posts of the experts, like Pihero, Zeke, PilotAydin and the numerous other real experts on this site.

Now I have to scroll through hundreds of irrelevant posts, I don't want to read, and it will be hundreds and hundreds of clicks.
Just not worth doing anymore.

Colors and ads are absolutely terrible as well.

I cannot say I will be gone for good, but my visits will for sure be very limited in the future.

Not a fan. We are people who like detailed, lengthy description and debate, and the old format was far better at managing that scenario, making it (relatively) quick and easy to skim through 100+ thread titles and then read through 300 posts. The new layout has destroyed that ability.

Now, I know you can't please all the people all the time, but I can't help thinking it would have been a good idea to spread the design research wider than the crew, to find out what's important to the wider membership. I may just not have been looking in the right place, but I don't recall seeing that invitation......

I'm definitely not a fan of the new format. I really liked the condensed format of the forums and the photos before. I could easily read more than 5 responses on a forum thread without having to scroll, now I get two, maybe even three and that's it. Same with the photos, one photo per "page" whereas before I could see 5 or 6. There is also way too much wasted space on the new site in general.

It is hard on the eyes without the dark contrast from the blue. To much white and they need to offer a list view without so much space between each post. I don't need to see every post in full, but I don't need to scroll for days just to go through 50 post. It's too time consuming. Some of us have jobs too. To get anywhere on here know I need a 4k screen the size of my wall.

Agree 100% with everything mentioned above. Add in the fact that the colors make reading MUCH MORE DIFFICULT, and I am already thinking about deleting airliners.net from my browser favorites. Such a waste of a perfectly GREAT site..... to now just-another-boring-advertising-driven-website.

What doesn't work so well is the light colour scheme, the dark one with light text was easier to read.

And being able to read an entire forum topic without having to click through multiple pages was fairly convenient on a mobile. With long topics, it was easy to skim through it, now it isn't.

OK, now some specific things:
1 - No flags against user names. They were really cute (well I thought so).
2 - It took 4 attempts to post because "There have been at least one new post(s) since blah blah. You might want to revise your post". Grrrrrrrrrrrr.
3 - Only 25 topics per page in the forum. Give me strength.

The site IMO has lost a lot of its originality. You could come here on any day at anytime and it just made you feel very special like you were in an airplane or at an airport or just among aviation themes and could relax and enjoy the experience. Now it's like browsing through Flickr.

Here are some pictures of the site from the Wayback Machine Internet Archive:

Airliners.net - October 2007 - Home Page

Airliners.net - October 2007 - Home Page 2

From the last update to the site it's clear to see that a lot of originality was kept whereas now the originality is basically gone. Maybe the "The Wings Of The Web" and 747 that used to be at the top of pretty much every page could come back? Also the lovely blue has gone that although was not a sky blue did give you a "sky blue" and a "it's time to fly" feeling IMO.

Maybe there could be a poll to see how many people like the old site vs the new site? When I first saw the new design I thought that I would never want to come here again but it's like drinking coffee in the morning to many!

Looks like a lot of people are not happy with the new format. I just tried using it on my phone...um yeah...not good! The old format was easy to read and easy to search for photos. Now it is all wacky...Oh yeah and no more live chat. What a bummer! Anyone who wants to keep in touch with me, look me up on Skype under the username Space.Diva1

I hope they fix whatever bugs and maybe make a better live chat with more than 30 lines of history. This was a cool site before and seemed like it had been around for a while with no issues. It is too bad sites have to do things like this. For those of us who have vision problems, these "new" designs are seldom geared toward making them easier to use and navigate and for some reason, almost no websites change the layout for the better. I tend to quit sites when I can't see things well and I have quit dozens of other sites for this same reason. People with vision problems complain and sites almost never do anything about this. Really it is too bad...

Constructive Criticism:
#0) Fix the thread post race condition PLEASE, I have never seen a forum that does this personally (it's MASSIVELY annoying) so I really question the post about saying most forums work this way. It super annoying to post a response, and then have to hit submit again (and scrolling down to just to get my originally attempted post is even worse). Post when I tell it, and your forum software should automatically place it based off of time stamp and reshuffle the post #'s in the local thread or whichever way makes logical sense.
#1) Change color scheme to mimic old site of the dark blue's. For example I have some floaters in my eyes that are really obvious when looking at things with bright colors. The old site was always super easy on the eyes with zero bother, but looking at this website, I want to wear sunglasses to address them as they are super annoying and obvious due to the color scheme.
#2) Embedded links need to spawn a new tab in local browser versus following the link directly in the original browser tab taking me away from a.net forcing me to hit the back button to go back to a.net
#3) Please change the post #1234972134987234 to 1,2,3,4,5 etc. in regards to the numbers incrementing in the local context of the thread instead of the entire site, makes it impossible to catch up without re-reading threads.
#4) Fix the embedded airline/airport codes hot linking like the old site
#5) Implement a desktop vs mobile interface option to allow us to have much more condensed views for desktops vs. mobile. I don't mind if you default to the mobile view, just give us the option to select desktop mode and save it as a cookie setting to appease both crowds.
#6)50,100 thread posts per page option
#7)Hide read posts in threads, and sort threads in sub-forum to show new/unread threads with bold headings, and read threads with non-bold. Except for when there is new posts in previously read threads kinda deal, that was nice to know when stuff is updated at a glance.

Oh crap.... there is a HUGE problem with the display of photos.
The bottom bar, that had the Airliners.net Photo, COPYRIGHT by the PHOTOGRAPHER (NAME) no longer displays on photos when you view them.
This means that A.net has made photo theft and use without attribution elsewhere just that much easier.
If there isn't the slightest effort to protect your photographer's work, then I'll have to remove all my images from this website.
THIS MUST BE FIXED IMMEDIATELY!!!!

Thanks

Note his dark background for the highlighted text is so much better on the eyes. The huge white space with slight grayed text is an eye strain waiting to happen. As a photographer it make me worry about continuing on here. Why risk my vision? Talk to a eye professional about the best color mixes to use for text for gods sake. Also why did the txt I highlighted originally take half my screen leaving 2 post on average I can see to sort through at a time. this is going to be such a scroll heavy site. I have to start looking for another discussion group. Sorry guys I'm gonna miss my daily treks here.

Yes, it's very annoying. The old design was visually much, much better. It was calming my eyes, and I could literally read for hours on a.nut. The new design is a strain on the eyes.

What I mostly care about, though, is a more sensible approach at writing postings. We can choose text colors and attributes (bold, italic...) much easier. We can do much more, and we don't have to resort to HTML (which works or don't works depending to the secret musings of the a.nut God).

Personally, I love the redesign and it should be much better on mobile than the previous version. I suspect that a lot of the dismay arises from the site now looking and being so different.

Wonder if it would have been better to run a beta version of this site at something like beta.airliners.net for a few months, so people could try it and feed back could've been taken into consideration.

Beautiful, easy for the casual visitors, but terrible usability for those who makes the site work, with lots and lots of bugs.

Old links doesn't work anymore - what a great stupid idea!

https://www.airliners.net/search/photo.s ... arch=xxxxx
https://www.airliners.net/myphotos/
https://www.airliners.net/myphotos/queue.main?
https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/add.main

None of these work anymore, but the worst is that the photos' old URL (ID only) is gone too. Only the later format is still working. I've got a spreadsheet with all my online photos at different sites. A simple formula concatenates URL with the ID. Now it doesn't work and there's no way to reach a photo by its ID.

But that's far from being the worst thing. Where are the watermarks, the footer????? :x  :o
If it was easy before to steal an image, now it's gonna be even easier!
I added a watermark when I uploaded it, if it was my intention to remove it, I would have done so.
And, when trying to add the watermark again, the tool does not work!! :x

Also, different crops and image sizes are easily available publicy on the internet using a simple URL trick:
https://imgproc.airliners.net/photos/airliners/8/1/4/2244418-0-10.jpg
Underline: the last three numbers of the ID show the correct folder path
Bold: change this from 10 to 19 to get different sizes

What does it means?
A simple bash script can easily download ALL JPEGs from airliners.net photos, in different sizes, without any watermark or author info, as airliners.net strips all EXIF info.

I'm seriously considering if there are any advantages keeping my photos here due to the now non-existent copyright protection.

Just some of the things that made a.net original which are missing now:
- legendary blue color scheme
- airliners.net title instead of only airliners
- 747 logo
- nationality flag next to poster's name
- RR rating next to poster's name (RRs were earned - or not - over the course of years)
- number of posts and date of joining next to poster's name
- airport/airline code infoboxes
- legendary set of emoticons
This forum used to be special. Now we have what looks like an inkjet printer driver support forum instead.

Nice to finally see the upgrade. However there are 2 major issues that I hope can be corrected:

1. Color scheme, as countless others have mentioned. I don't even like reading anything on the site anymore.

2. Too much space between things - needs to be more dense and compact.

Also I'm unable to change my profile pictures. I upload an image and then click save, but nothing changes.

This is an absolute travesty. I'm not going to explain how to the entire internet, but I can view the real name of every poster on here within three clicks per user. I managed to change mine to no longer display my real name after several attempts. This is an absolutely massive invasion of privacy. If this is not fixed within 24 hours, I will be deleting my account.

Try scrolling down to see if there is an error message that says something like "region field must be completed". That was stopping my profile pic upload.

How do I do multiple quotes as I go through the thread? It appears I now have to reply individually each time I want to quote someone.

Also "check for new relies" is missing. It is better than reloading the page.

And I will say again what I have said and what many others are saying:
More compact! Less space between everything. Oh and a whole bunch of other things (flags, RR, blue color, AIRLINERS.NET - not just "AIRLINERS" cuz' we're "a.nutters" not just "A's", etc.)

There are some serious issues for all photographers to consider.

There doesn't seem to be any way of viewing a photo at its native resolution, which is just crazy. :o
