and badly it was indeed done.

To extend and correct your metaphor...
The building inspector comes to your old, dated house to give it a once-over. Although the styling is a little dated, it's also classically beautiful and functional. However, the inspector discovers structural problems with your house; which although is only causing minor dips in the floor now, could cause very serious problems soon if not fixed. The problems are extensive, from the roof and wall structure, to even the foundation, which is severely cracked and settled. It too will need to be rebuilt.
You move out, and the house comes down. You can't access it for some time. But soon, the builders have built you a new house. It looks different! Modern! The "charm" is gone. You're disappointed, but glad to know that your house is now safe and it won't fail you.
You miss the old styling, but as your family moves back in, and the old pictures go back up on the wall (maybe they're of airplanes), you realize that what's really important hasn't changed. The people are the same, and that's what made your house a home.
I would a. Expect the owner to discover and treat the problems earlier
B. Implement a plan to recover the look in advance of impending failure
C.have an inspection of the property done on purchase to understand the ussues.
And no I wouldn't be glad I still had a house, I'd be utterly pissed off at losing significant value on my investment
Maybe the metaphor would be more accurate if instead of your house, it was an apartment... as you, nor I, nor any of the users or crew here, are the owners of airliners.net.
The continued complaints from many here about the new look of the site are comical and childish, especially in the face of the ongoing fixes and updates by the DM staff. Someone changed the look of a little internet website you visit. Get over it.
