To extend and correct your metaphor...

The building inspector comes to your old, dated house to give it a once-over. Although the styling is a little dated, it's also classically beautiful and functional. However, the inspector discovers structural problems with your house; which although is only causing minor dips in the floor now, could cause very serious problems soon if not fixed. The problems are extensive, from the roof and wall structure, to even the foundation, which is severely cracked and settled. It too will need to be rebuilt.

You move out, and the house comes down. You can't access it for some time. But soon, the builders have built you a new house. It looks different! Modern! The "charm" is gone. You're disappointed, but glad to know that your house is now safe and it won't fail you.

You miss the old styling, but as your family moves back in, and the old pictures go back up on the wall (maybe they're of airplanes), you realize that what's really important hasn't changed. The people are the same, and that's what made your house a home.

I would a. Expect the owner to discover and treat the problems earlier
B. Implement a plan to recover the look in advance of impending failure
C.have an inspection of the property done on purchase to understand the ussues.

And no I wouldn't be glad I still had a house, I'd be utterly pissed off at losing significant value on my investment

Maybe the metaphor would be more accurate if instead of your house, it was an apartment... as you, nor I, nor any of the users or crew here, are the owners of airliners.net.

The continued complaints from many here about the new look of the site are comical and childish, especially in the face of the ongoing fixes and updates by the DM staff. Someone changed the look of a little internet website you visit. Get over it.

No. It once was art museum, where artists hangs their art for free and people can visit and look at them. New owner said that building are almost collapsing and there is not enough income from ticket sales to keep it going. So after some long time reconstruction you now has Wall Mart shopping center, where you still can hang your picture. If you want...

I start getting used to the search function.
However, it would be really beneficial to have the registration also in the tile view.

I think the profile pics on this site should be a bit larger than they are right now, I want more of Putin's perfectly constructed forehead showing to each user who reads my post.

Completely agree. have contributed here for years, but this redesign is terrible in every way. I am certainly not willing to say that I won't be back, but it is far less intuitive to see topics of interest to me than before and the ads are omnipresent. I will definitely be checking in less.

Horrible.

If you read the New Site FAQ you will find that you can follow topics, they are collected under your profile. There are options to bookmark topics or even get notifications of new replies if you look up to the right of the first post on every page. A star to bookmark, and an eye to get email notifications.
I agree that it's not as visible as it was, but phpbb can be equipped with icons for topics you have replied to. That however is not one of the main concerns right now.

Be aware that one can now apparently reply to old previously archived/locked threads.

So you could have an attack of the zombie threads if you are not careful (just what you need, a zombie apocalypse along with everything else....

The thing I can't understand is... why you get into this without fixing anything. Everything is a mess now. I would prefer a thousand times the old version, than this **it on its actual state.

1: In the top right corner click on right-most icon in the navigation header and from the drop-down menu select "Settings".

Image

2: In your Profile under Profile Photo, select "Choose File". Navigate to a suitable photo or icon on your PC and upload. Take care to read the size and file type restrictions.

Image

3: You will have the option to crop the uploaded photo or reposition it within a frame. Once you are satisfied you will need to scroll to the bottom of the page and select "Save".

Surprised this has not made the news on CNN. However if you Wikipedia airliners.net it's on their, and if you click on Demand Media that's a interesting read too.

Well, this is my first post on A.net forum even if I have been lurking for so many years (following since 2000 and started uploading pictures in 2005).
I agree with most of the other users comments, the new site has become almost unusable and lacks most of the practicality and functions of the old one. I understand the previous site had old design and was difficult to mantain, but that is not a sufficient reason to justify the huge downgrade A.net has suffered with this "upgrade".
I already found I'm spending much less time on A.net watching pictures which for me has been basically a daily activity for a long time.

As a contributor with some quantity of pictures in the database, and being more interested in the photographic side of A.net, this is my feedback and some improvements I would like to see implemented in future. I hope the staff will be able to quickly address these and the other issues already mentioned in this thread, and appreciate someone is already working to solve the biggest issues.

- With this new layout everything is too big, lot of empty space and the information is too much scattered in the page. Always need a lot of scrolling to get info that was once available at a glance. Pictures and info in the list should be resized and adjusted to make the stuff more compact and readable.
I prefer to see more picture thumbnails in the search result page, now they are so big I can see just 2-3 of them.
A.net database is an important resource for aviation, not just a simple aviation photogallery.
- Same for the picture page, the photo information is spread on a big, mostly empty space. Need to see all the picture related info in a compact table below the picture, like in the old website. It's really uncomfortable to scroll so much to read the lower part with photographer remark, date, airport. Better to keep the picture centered in the page wihout other stuff on the right side of the photo.
- In the profile page with the user uploaded pictures I can't order by date, if I select "date" all picture are displayed random (I think this is a bug). Need also the desc/asc function to order newest/oldest first.
I prefer to see the pictures in this page in the same format as in the search result page, not in "tile" format without any other info.
- Need to display the aircraft full version, not the generic type (e.g. Boeing 777-243/ER not Boeing 777-200)
- Photo corner has basically disappeared. I miss all the useful functions of the old site like queue status, statistics, link to my photos, ...
- Use full numbers for statistics (e.g. 3,234 not 3.2K)
- Some sections of the old site have disappeared (aircraft data, quizzes, ...).
- It would be useful to have the cross-data search button already in the list page, not in the picture page, like in the old site.
- I think it is useless to put photographer avatar and flag on each picture in the list and search results, just put them in the profile page.
- Another smaller thing I would like to see is the rejection reason in the rejection list (not after opening the rejected picture) and if possible a watermark preview in the upload page, before confirming the upload.
- Last but not least: bring back the 747 header and the classic dark blue background!!! (ok it seems they are already working on this) :)
Also please change the site icon (favicon), I really can't understand is a paper airplane like someone said or anything aviation related.

Sorry for my lengthy post, just wanted to add my feedback to the discussion ;)

I have some brief comments about the new site design:

- While the old site had its issues, especially while reading or posting on a mobile device or tablet, I think that this new design is completely the other way. I liked the compactness of the posts and the ability to quickly scroll through many posts to see what was going on.
- The 'light grey' on white motif is hard to read to see the least. I appreciated the dark blue background and white text for this reason.
- Why do you have to make the posts so huge? There is a lot of wasted space on the screen.

The old airliners.net had a distinctive look and feel that I appreciated. This new site feels like every other PHP based forum site that exists on the internet.

After close to 100 years of operation, Coca-Cola made the biggest mistake in its history and decided to change the formula of Coke because it was 'old', and change should occur just for the sake of change. The resulting backlash from customers who enjoyed it for what it was, and were disappointed by the 'change' caused the company to do an about-face, and 'New Coke' disappeared, and went the way of the Cadillac Cimarron as a huge embarrassment for the brand. Airliners, net developers should very carefully reconsider what they have done. The entire world is not operating from hand-held devices. Many, many of us are regular users of desktop computers with large monitors, or larger-sized laptops.

There is so much wasted whitespace on this forum. I have 30" monitors and I used to be able to get the whole thread list on a single page. Now I get about 15 threads on the homepage and 5-6 posts. Mostly whitespace.
Same on my mobile. The old site I could zoom out to see more, now I get 1-2 per page and I am constantly scrolling around.

I don't find it an upgrade.

It's baffling that this has not been fixed yet. It's a simple CSS change that should take 5 seconds to do. Why has it not been fixed?

Maybe because Image

#font {

This is hard?

Or takes 3+ days to fix?

Pardon me if I'm having a hard time believing that a company which released a broken web site that removed a significant number of features that people knew and relied on without much testing or interaction from the community and released personal information on its users without so much as a public apology is going to fix this properly.

When is someone from DM going to step up in front of the community and apologize for this mess?

While nowhere near as bad as New Coke, this whole situation is similar in so many ways. Coke was as tone-deaf to their audience as DM seems to be here, and tried telling their customers what they wanted instead of LISTENING to what their customers wanted. Coke for a time refused to believe that anything was wrong and continued with their disastrous marketing campaign until sales figures showed what damage they had done to their own brand. DM is proceeding down that road now. It would be wise to turn back now before it's too late.

But apparently Demand Media is listening. We are told, for example, that the old blue background is coming back, about which I'm not particularly thrilled but it seems the majority have demanded the blue. I'd rather have a black font on a white ground.

I think many of the reactions here are irrational and over the top. The new site works fine for me.

I think many of the reactions are justified. There were simply too many changes all at once and not particularly good ones. I think perhaps that a lot of us had expected more of a rewamp of the old site. Fixing te bug problem etc, but not a whole new site.

Also, as I have posted in a different thread, it is clear that the number of visitors and members logged in has taken a serious hit. Some people think that I mention this just to add another problem to the list for fun, but I think it's a serious issue. We all loved this site and I atleast feel sad to see this:

28/46 indeed feels like a low number. I admit I was probably too fast to judge your other thread, however in all fairness you could've included JohnKrist's response here as well. Perhaps that will offer a clue as to how/what/why.

The difference is that the forum software only checks who are actually using the forum, the old site counter included all who browsed the site, whether it was forum, images, chat etc.

The old site could never have been fixed. Ever. It was terminally ill and on life-support. I'm afraid a new site was the only realistic way to fix it. For those still in denial, the old site was horribly broken.

I would agree that the change hasn't been well handled. Why not tell everyone what was happening and let us access the new site before it went live? A lot of the negativity could have been fixed before going live. I would like someone from DM to explain the 'thinking' behind how the site was changed.

It may well be the case, but just take a moment to think of the following figures :
Members : 236 896
Latest member joined in three days ago !
Average number of people on the forums from 21.00 to 00.00 CE : 41 (out of 236 896 !!! )
Total number of posts in that period : 115 ( an average of 38 posts /h )

Most important first: we do not have any payment data other than the originating email and sum paid. All other data is handled by Paypal. So no worries regarding our end of it.

Second, most photographers had their real name visible in order to link their images to their forum profile, and the photos themselves show it as well. So my guess is that we made a wrong decision and presented all users real name, but that has now been changed.

Some of them are justified, but many are not. It takes only a small amount of effort (and some questions )to work out how to do the things that may be done differently now. Mostly, it's just the shock of the new - or the shock of the different.

Membership may take a hit for a while, but it will pass. Some members will get over the shock and come drifting back, and new members will not know what the old site was like and wonder what all the fuss was about.

Have the upload limits changed? I just saw that i can upload more than 20 photos (which were my limit due <1000 photos in databse).

I don´t understand in my screening, two photos are marked with "high quality" but are not added to database, while other photos are marked as "screening".

Can I delete or change information form an uploaded shot?

As a loyal user since 1997 (2000 on this account), I am appalled at the new website. The old website was easily accessible and had become a comfortable place. A known entity as you will. The new website screams "Modern Fad" to me. The forum reminds me of a cheap, free forum you find on many websites. It's user interface is clumsy and doesn't reflect the almost 20 years of history which we used, and many loved, on the old website.

Secondly, over the past few years, I have seen in an increased "We don't care" from the Demand Media staff and new "crew." Most appear to be enthusiasts or programmers who couldn't care less about those of us who actually live and work in this profession. Shooting pictures of airplanes 2 days a week or reading these forums while troubleshooting bugs does not make you an expert in aviation, just another enthusiast.

Unless these items change, I won't be back. I will take my valuable time away from my family elsewhere, like the real world. It's been a fun 19 years surfing Airliners.net, the old mIRC chat days, learning from people like Wilco, EA AS CO, etc and the other professionals, arguing endlessly with GKirk and ANCSpotter, and the constant banter of "AvB" and "Will Boeing ever build another 757"? So I say farewell to my friends and few remaining professional colleagues on Airliners.net. There will always be a sweet tea (or stronger libation) available at my hangar for anyone willing to leave the internet for the real world.

1: There upload limits seem to be disabled at the moment, but this is coming back.
2: I will make a separate thread about this in site related, explaining all the info you might encounter there. Stay tuned.
3: Yes, we have the 'correct information' feature for that. However, this is currently disabled, since the editor tools are not properly functioning yet.

Progress will be made to make the site just as good (or better) than the old one. But the quote above is intriguing.
In my case, I live and breathe aviation, from a hobby as well as professional point of view. But I'm guessing that I will be dismissed as being of the minority who do not fall under quote.
I'm kinda reading the above as "you need to be an aviation professional to be crew". Maybe I'm interpreting it wrong, but if I'm not, then why should it be like that?

Programmers don't need to be anything but programmers. My company make software for billing of water and waste collection, should my programmers be garbage men and pipe layers?
Volunteering crew consists of almost all aspects of aviation, pilots, captains, rampers, handling, photographers, and general enthusiasts, just like the user base. And that's the way it should be. Airliners was made for all, not just the professionals and I think the mix is what makes the site live.

As of now I have to give the new Airliners.net two thumbs down. :(

I don't like the new look, since it makes it look boring and just like other aviation sites (jetphotos). The original look might have been a bit dated, but it was very comfortable and easy to look at.

I also miss the fact that my old shortcuts for specific searches don't seem to work anymore. Not sure if I'll be able to rebuild them, since I haven't tried yet. I still haven't been able to find my old stats page.

I'm also considering not uploading to Airliners.net any more....Just getting sick of all the politics, the inconsistent screenings, the screeners using vague rejections just to fulfill their rejection ratios.

One of the reasons I started uploading to A.net was to get some photo sales. That option has been removed a long time ago. I haven't received much money from this feature, but it did feel good to see people buying your work. Since Demand media took over, potential customers have been contacting me less and less. Nowadays I get more spam using the "contact the photographer" option than anything else.

To me Airliners.net has become just a portal for trashy advertising to generate revenue not for the members, but for the owners. Without our content they wouldn't have a business, and I feel stupid for spending my money and my time to make demand media rich.....to me that seems just wrong.

Some issues I'm facing:

  • On my desktop, I see two symbols at the top right, a bell and my Avatar. On my Samsung tablet there is only one list symbol. When I click this list symbol nothing whatsoever happens. What is this? Non-responsive design? Also it seems silly to replace two smallish symbols by one. There is more than enough room for both also on the tablet.
  • The avatar takes you to a menu offering, among others, "My Profile" and "Settings". When clicking "My Profile" there is no way to edit the profile other than going to "Settings". That's not quite what a user expects.
  • The menu for editing the profile does not indicate mandatory fields. It gives you an error message like "Real name is required" which you can easily miss because the menu is so huge you have to scroll down quite far to see it. Again, not very well thought-out from a user experience point of view.
  • A minor point: the horizontal orange/grey bar reminds me of a progress bar stuck forever ...

1: This is on the fix-list.
2: I will suggest this to the developers.
3: I will put this on the fix-list.
4: We're getting some layout tweaks, so hopefully that will sort it.

So I didn't read all 19 pages of this thread and I used the search function but couldn't find this. Here are my questions about the new site:

1. Is screening still happening? I've had 7 photos in the queue for 2 weeks now and they're still in "Screening."

2. Where can I find the queue status? (Like how many total photos are in the queue and what day of uploads they're screening right now?)

1: We are slowly screening a number of images a day. There are a couple of tweaks that still need to happen to ensure proper photo quality. Once that is done, we will get the machine running fulltime.
2: Unfortunately this is not enabled yet, but it is on the fix-list.

Here's a quick edit (font looks bad) I have done of the "Top of Last: 24 Hours" page.

If you guys could make it look like this that would bring back a lot of the originality from the old site!

Only 3 color changes!

Background color (Blue): #45678C
Photo-box color (Darker Blue): #1D364C
Font color (Light Gray): #C4C8CC

Image

These colors were taken directly from the old A.net site using Firefox's "Inspect Element" feature.

Hopefully this could be the future color layout when browsing photos in the database?

Thank you,

Hi folks,

Usually I'm very sceptical on any changes of what is working well. But I have to say there are lot of things I enjoy with the new site. First experience I'd call more positive than negative. Bags are sad but I hope it is temporary problem. If navigation will be improved a bit it will be step forward. After major isues will be solved I'd be happy to give of some more comments on possible less important improvements.

Regards,

Fyodor

We can finally screen in original uploaded quality now. The size (6xx, 7xx, 8xx pixels) is being worked on, but if I understand correctly, the developers have a solution for that. So hopefully fixed before the weekend is over and otherwise on Monday.

So would you advise just withholding from doing a reupload until Tuesday of that image to see if the developers get that kink fixed up?

Seems like it is only affecting the images that were in the queue when the site was transitioned over. New images being PS (new registrations, etc) which were added to the queue AFTER the migration seem to be unaffected by the issue.

I'm fed up looking at Konstantin's photo on the front page. When Sam Chui adds his there will be no peace! I'm outta here. The site is irrecoverable.

Hi Len,

Unless people have priority photos, I would advise to wait a few days until everything is truly sorted. The queue is over 10.000 photos now ( :( ), so you would do us a big favor if you sit on your photos for a bit and upload them at a later point in time.

And grainy, quality, editing.

But that's actually the point, a.net expects us to upload only the best photos with the highest quality and now reveals a website with poor quality and less functions than the old one. This website is simply not tested or finished. Guys you can't bring that!

The Broken Wings

Sun Jun 19, 2016 8:16 pm

- Where is everybody? ... Can anyone hear me?! Can anyone see me?!! …Where am I!? …Oh, I must be dreaming ... I must be dreaming! Wait! ..Wait!! Please, don´t go! Don´t leave me this way... Where am I ?!! -
- It´s ok. Shhhhhh … Shhhhhh ... Everything will be fine ... - (silence)
- Oh, no…no!!! Here it comes again!! Can someone lend me a hand?! Hold me?!… I'm so scared and alone ... Wait!! … What is that? Who´s that sitting in front of my computer?? Ou, wait ... wait, is it me?! Yes, that´s me!!? I can clearly see myself sitting in front of my computer?!! Oh, dear God! ...-

- Hey…do you hear me?! I am here!! ... Here!! -
… - Yes, You!! …Please… please … forgive me for interrupting the discussions, but I just don´t know whom to ask, because … I can´t understand anything ... anything! and it really bothers me and hurts so much !!… could You, please! tell me how much longer will our Airliners.net be in the maintenance? I'm so afraid it was badly damaged when it has gone for so long! I understand it can´t fly right now. Yes, I know it was grounded, sidelined and now it is under the control of that …Demand Media´s Management Board, but … but only until the end of its maintenance! Right?…Right?! And this is the reason why we now have just this … temporary mock-up of our Airliners.net, built on that ´cheap open source off-the-shelf forum software´ … that … what was its name? … Yes, phpBB3… Is that so?! But it doesn´t matter because this is only temporary and soon we´ll have our Airliners.net back? Right? I hope our crew, hijacked and blackmailed by DM group, and which is trying to convince us that everything will be fine, will be released and will continue to fly our Airliners.net craft again!!-

- Yes, I know …. I know, I remember my deceased father telling me, that there are callous and unscrupulous people who do not care for the other but just for their benefit, but no one would do that to still our forum and planted this in exchange. It would not, is that so it wouldn´t?! I just want my Airliners.net back and that everything is the same, just as it was before. God, please help my friends and me to get our Airliners.net back! Please … -

Mario (11 y/o)

I am sitting numb in front of my old computer ... somehow helpless, dejected and weak, quite unsuccessfully trying to reach some of the thoughts that are passing by me. I can feel how deep inside me almost every thought, every feeling … every sense is dying. Suddenly … as the part of my life, on whose wings I could easily fly so high and to the most hidden, farthest and beautiful parts of this planet, begins to dwindle around me, losing all its recognizability and beauty. I am so confused and strangely uncertain if it was real at all!?... The broken wings ...

I am so indescribable sorry I allowed Airliners.net to become so important part of my life. I am sorry because of spending so much time and investing all that effort in every of my posts... ´Why?´
If I had not created such a relationship with the Forum, my whole sorrow, disbelief and disappointment by that in what I am looking at, in front of me, in this moment would be incomparably smaller.
There is so much I still wanted to write and post, but in a moment I've lost the will for everything ... just everything.
I don´t know; maybe the time has come to say 'Goodbye'. For all this I was completely unprepared. I had no time even to say goodbye to our Airliners.net... Ah … just another wonderful, but too early completed, story of my life, but !… I'm not giving up. Something does not allow me to do that. I´ve survived months .. years in two armies, the war with the rifle in my hands, the loss of many loved ones, 206 blood donations, and for our Old Airliners.net I will fight by praying to God for it to come back just as it was. I don´t know how else, but the prayer ... it is so powerful and mighty weapon that does not kill. All I want is to open my eyes realizing that it was nothing but a bad dream... nightmare..

Nice regards

P.S. From the previous site ...

Gosh, that's all a bit dramatic. Weeping for your lost youth? LOL

Now that I'm used to its quirks, I'm enjoying the new site. I have still have a few tiny issues but that's probably because I haven't investigated them.

I loved the process of discovery (how to change my avatar form that dreadful skull) and I love some of the new features - such as the wee bell that tells me all the new posts have been made since I was last here.

I still don't like the font (grey on white) but they tell me that's changing - although I'm not looking forward to the return of the blue background.

But generally, it is what it is, and it's working fine for me.

I have to ask, quick question, will flags be making a return?

And is there any chance of a default profile pic which is slightly more colourful or more appealing on the eye than what is offered now?

Thanks!

I joined this site originally in 1999, and after my photography hobby waned, I stuck around for the forums. Its unusual format was easy to read and easy to navigate.

In my opinion, the forum has been ruined. It is no longer as easy to navigate topics or read the threads, and reading the posts has become a kludge - even quotes are harder to identify.

I don't know who told you that this format is an improvement - it is a decided step backward - to the point that I feel no interest in trying to navigate it.

So, after some 25,000 posts (my original account plus this one), 17 years as a photo contributor, one-time screener and moderator, this post will be my last. I might drop in now and then to see if the format has been changed, in which case I might come back. But it is a sad milestone for me.

All the best,

Dreadnought (cfalk)
