Gosh, that's all a bit dramatic. Weeping for your lost youth? LOL

Now that I'm used to its quirks, I'm enjoying the new site. I have still have a few tiny issues but that's probably because I haven't investigated them.

I loved the process of discovery (how to change my avatar form that dreadful skull) and I love some of the new features - such as the wee bell that tells me all the new posts have been made since I was last here.

I still don't like the font (grey on white) but they tell me that's changing - although I'm not looking forward to the return of the blue background.

But generally, it is what it is, and it's working fine for me.

Hi mariner,

It is my understanding that the old color scheme will be returning as a theme-- I think there will also be a theme similar to the current one available. If this happens, it will be an option available to each user. So you can view a white background like exists today, while someone else will be able to view a blue.

This is my understanding of it, a developer or Paul may have a better understanding of what the color changes entail.

Thanks

I hope you;re right. I was brought up with books and newspapers that printed black on white and it is still, for me, the easiest way to read text.

But what the hey? If it is the blue - and only the blue - I'll still cope, as I did for years on the old site. :-)

There's a problem with the photo search that didn't exist with the old site.

Example: I was looking for photos of Air Canada Airbus A340s. They operated both the A340-300 and A340-500. I wanted both. I clicked the "Advanced" button.

Then scrolled to Airbus A340-... (the entry without the model numbers) in the "Basic Type" drop-down list. Then clicked "Show me the photos". Only 4 photos appear. There should be well over 1,000 of both models.

With the old photo search tool, when you entered the generic type without specific model references, you got everything for that type. No idea why only 4 photos appear with the AC A340 generic search.

Tried similar entry for Boeing 707-... in the basic type box for BOAC and the response is "Sorry, no results", when in fact there should be dozens.

Now, it seems that if you want to search for photos you have to enter the specific model number, requiring multiple searches when an airline has operated several models of the same type.

Also, I much preferred the smaller thumbnails of the old site that didn't require as much scrolling, but that's a secondary issue I can live with. The old photo search menu seemed much more concise than the new one with all the entries closer together and easier to see at a glance.

Hi again,

I am glad to see that the feedback of the users is being reviewed and changes will occur. Some of them already happened: In a previous post I complained about not being able to sort photo albums by "date added", but only by "views" and "likes". I assume other problems like blurred images when enlarging a picture to fit the screen size will be solved in near future.

All in all it is great to see that a rework is going on and the community has a voice in this process.

With this post I want to say 'Thank you' to those reviewing community feedback and working on updating the update.

Not sure whether this issue is already on the list of "to dos".

I clicked on a link in Right Now In The Forum on the home page to "Belly cargo: highly profitable or not?"

Two problems:
1) the original post is not displayed, only the headline is; and
2) the replies all relate to a completely different thread.

It looks as if there is an indexing problem.

So in search I type in B707 hit show me the photos and the first photo I get is a Italian Air Force Tornado, further down the track I get a B737 and at the end of the page B727.
Over the years we have had airport observation decks close down, security telling us to move on which have decimated our hobby of aviation. Now this.

Hi Len,

Unless people have priority photos, I would advise to wait a few days until everything is truly sorted. The queue is over 10.000 photos now ( :( ), so you would do us a big favor if you sit on your photos for a bit and upload them at a later point in time.

Kas,
I've pretty much withheld uploading since this began. IF there was a way to pull photos from the queue I would have taken all of mine out as I don't want my pictures being displayed in such poor resolution. Hopefully us photographers will regain the ability to manage our own queue again as well as have a view as to what the current screening situation is like sooner rather than later. I'm taking down the info on the accepted shots that are showing up in reduced size and will re-upload in the coming weeks when this mess is sorted out if the developers can't get those to show up at full size. Hopefully sometime Monday (after the DM developers return from the weekend off) we will have an update on the status of this situation. Please keep me updated on this one!

To me a.net is all about the aviation photo db. The one thing that should be right is the quality of the images on this site.

I would like to add a few initial observations on the site changes. I agree with many that the blue color is a much better contrast when viewing photos. I wish the blue background would in deed return. But as for the individuals photos themselves, one of the reasons why I prefer this website is the great convenience of finding all of the relevant and pertinent information that I would like to know about the photograph right within the lower periphery of the photo. If I wanted to view more pictures by the photographer, it was simple enough to click close by; and so on. With this "upgrade," I find myself doing a whole lot of scrolling down the page in order to find information. I agree with several observers who indicated there being too much blank space (the line spacing is simply much too wide!). I personally think the single space between text lines ought to have been retained. I find that while the scrolling may work on a larger screen (still a lot of scrolling, though), it is terribly frustrating on smaller screens - I can just imagine trying to view the website on a smartphone. I wish you would reconsider going back to single space between lines of text and, if at all possible, adopt to a format whereby the information does not require too much scrolling. Thank you for considering these items. But overall, seems like a great upgrade/update!

What an arrogant, contemptious remark. To you it may be a "little internet website you visit," but I have contributed several thousand photos to this website. Just processing them to the acceptable standards was a lot of work. Hundreds of hours. I have more then 10, 000, 000 views on my pictures, which means that I have personally contributed to the success of this website. Having done that, I expect some respect and recognition - at least of my basic expectations of what this site should be like. And now someone turned it into something so faceless and cheap, that I don't even consider uploading here any more, unless some very serious changes are made. I have enough respect for my work not to upload it just anywhere. I personally know quite a few contributing photographers - not a single one of them is happy. Demand Media have wiped their feet on us.

Regarding the flags, I don't know. I will add it to the list, but if it is feasible, it'll be low priority. I hope you will understand.
As for the profile photo, go to the upper right corner and sign in --> settings --> upload profile photo --> scroll to the bottom and click "save".

I really don't like the new forum,

People here like to post a lot of posts especially for hot topics. In the old forum, when you enter a topic, it was great to be able to scroll all the way down and it was also great that either the beginning or the end was compressed so that you know where you were. Now it takes a lot of time to read page by page and it is very hard to catch up.

Not crazy about the background either, it was much easier to read against the old blue background.

Upload queue

Mon Jun 20, 2016 9:28 am

Hi team,
if I understand the upload limit is now disabled, in this way everyone of us can upload a large amount of photos ... is that true?
I stop to upload at my limit and I'm waiting for screening as anyone but if anyone take advantage 8-) from this bug I think the next photo that I will upload could take a lot of time before screening :?: !? I purpose to disable uploading until this bug is fixed ...
Thank's

Hello to everyone,

I'm a member of Airlines since 2005 and loved every bits of it. Since the website was redesigned, I don't feel any urge to come back every day on here not because I stopped loving aviation overnight, but rather the drastic redesign of the website, it's nothing related to "I've been used to it" but rather the simplicity of the old airliners was it's advantage.

Regarding the new design, first of all, the change is very drastic, and not in a good way, people were used to a specific good design that worked for over 15 years, in a day, we were welcomed by something unrecognizable, if you look on other popular websites on the internet that changed their designs, the changes were made gradually over several months/ years.

Another thing to mention, is the "like" or "follow" "profile pictures" or any other type of social media kind of things. The is not facebook or twitter or any other social media platform and it's real pity it goes that way. Airliners is a place where aviation fans meet and discuss aviation, where photographers show their talent.

And the last thing, that really turns down the experience for me, is the fact that everything is "in your face now" everything is giant and big, one of the advantages of the old design was simple small and very simplistic, the old design worked. Yes i'm sure if i'll spend some time on the new site i will get used to it, but, why i need to do it, when you had a perfect working website, what was the urge to change everything?

Hello
In resume - I've missed the old vision of the site.
There are some usefull tings that are not present in updated version - "Links to your photos", view at the whole screening statistics - photos not screened per day, in screening, the possibility to delete a photo from the screening queue.

airkas - this is not necessarily a bug - Karel split off the off-topic discussion to a new thread.

The issue is that each post, pointlessly, retains its own copy of the thread title (which can be edited by users anyway).

In the "Search Result" section (Photo Overview) there is no Registration visible for the Aircraft pictured. Only Airline, Typ, Location and Date.

For me the Registration of the Aircraft is very important and should be also shown on the Search Result within the Thumbnails of the picture.

When viewing any one photographer's photos, it's no longer possible to sort by location, reg, date, etc. Sorting by "date added" is an option, but it doesn't work. Instead it returns stuff in random order (and that order varies each time). The number of images per page and the image size can no longer be selected.

Albums have also suffered with the redesign. The "cover photo" is displayed BIG, presumably to make it more attractive, but then grayed out and (often) clipped. When you select an album, you get a BIGGER view of the cover photo, still clipped and grayed out. Only upon scrolling down can any of the album content be seen. That content, however, is limited to ten images (clipped, if they don't match the developer-determined proportions). Want to see more? Go to the nav buttons and select another page. You're rewarded with (again) only the BIGGER, grayed out, clipped cover photo. Scroll, lather, rinse, scroll, repeat. What's worse is that the pictures are not in the order that the album's creator selected. The whole point of albums is for people to be able to assemble coherent collections of images that can be viewed together. At the risk (certainty?) of ranting, it's hard for me to think that someone decided, "No, no, this is a better way to do this. Photographers, members, and viewers will prefer it."
"That's so stupid! If they're so secret, why are they out where everyone can see them?" - my kid

Dmnt I was almost finished writing up quite a lengthy forumpost when I had to leave the computer for a while. Come back, finish, press submit and suddenly have to login again. Post disappeared. Very annoyed by this - as with pretty much all the "upgrades".

The old site had its quirks, but they were nothing compared to what a.net looks and feels like now. How hard would it be to incorporate *functional* updates, but remain using the old site's skin?

After reading the posts on the "upgrade" and noticing that most users agree with my opinion that this is a disaster, why hasn't the A.net team not rolled out the changes in a parallel fashion where both the old and new sites would be functional simultaneously while all the bugs are worked out. My opinion is that making us switch to an unfinished portal was a very bad idea. I have seen other websites that would take many months, sometimes up to a year to roll out a new design....usually letting users log in and take it for a test ride while having the old site still functional.

At this point, the site changes might be the last straw that broke the camels back, and I will probably abandon Airliners.net......it is a huge time and effort sacrifice for me and now any satisfaction has been taken out of it for me.

There are still a few missing, but I'll put it on the list to get added.

More or less, yes. We are accepting a handful full of images every now and then.

I'm surprised I haven't seen this mentioned yet, maybe I just missed it. The "Right Now in the Forums" box on the front page doesn't display &-signs or "-signs correctly, for example ""AirBridgeCargo Airlines close to ordering 10 748F"" or "Airliners.net Site Upgrade Announcement & Discussion".

Apart from that I can only agree with the big majority here, it's sad to see this great aviation photo site go down like this. The developers have now had almost a week to fix stuff and on the frontend, I don't really see any changes. Copyright bars are back on some photos but not all and totally don't fit into the bad new design, cropping and full size images are still a mess. A good example is the no. 2 photo in the top 5 right now. If you were DM and you really cared about the people that have devoted so much time for this website, wouldn't you work your absolute hardest to fix this within a few days? I just cannot believe that DM did not figure out that the pictures are what people come here for and how airliners.net built up its reputation. The last thing you should f... up on a photo site are the photos!

I'm not quite getting the problem here...

If I look in the site's source code (it's public, so yeah why not? you're not hiding something here), I see this:

<meta name="author" content="SiteSplat www.sitesplat.com">
<meta name="designer" content="SiteSplat www.sitesplat.com">
/theme/../../FLATBOOTS/theme/

If I google this, I come to Themeforest:
http://themeforest.net/item/flatboots-p ... 0-/8536771

Then...
the marketplace that sells this theme obviously states:

Flatboots for phpBB 3.1 includes:
    Async Ressource Loader
    Fancy Lazy Topics Loader
    Written from Scratch
    SEO Powerhouse
    Smart addons
    !! >> Smart colors

The way I understand this is that this theme includes an easy way to just change the colors, so why don't you just do it? There have been screenshots floating around here with adjusted colors... it really isn't that hard to do and everyone would have been much happier!

What kind of developers do you employ who can't even make simple changes like these with a ready-to-use-template that doesn't even seem to require coding to change the appearance in the first place?

I think I should keep it the way I told myself days ago and just stay away from here. This seems unprofessionally made to me and since there's a third party involved (the original theme developers) everything asked for around here will be implemented utterly slow if at all because you guys obviously didn't develop the forum style yourself but just bought it.

Why didn't you just say so in the first place? It's not a shame to buy code, it's only a problem not being able to master it. It would have made a lot of people see reason why every change is going so slowly if it comes down to forum matters and would have explained why no crew member could give any details about what the "developers" thought while designing the board style. It simply wasn't them to make design decisions but a third party. That explains a lot I'd say and would have helped to cool everyone down as to why things take so long.

Communication really is of the essence sometimes... I would have loved to see you make a u-turn and just make things right with the community after the disastrous launch of the new website but it seems you don't make a u-turn anymore... pity. A.net was THE first bookmark in my browser followed by FlyerTalk and Flight Global... WAS.

New Threads -vs- Old Threads

Mon Jun 20, 2016 6:04 pm

Maybe I'm missing something, but how do you tell NEW threads from OLD threads with new comments, since my last visit? If I mark Civ-Av as 'read' and come back a couple days later to a hundred threads, I can't tell which threads are new and which threads are old, but have new comments. They all look the same and it shouldn't be this way.

The old site used bright red, dark red, and blue (I think) to differentiate the thread status.

New Thread
Old Thread-new comments
Old Thread-no new comments

What I would like is to keep the current orange thread title for NEW threads, and then have a new duller orange color for OLD threads with new comments. Old threads with no comments can default back to that hard to see gray color as I don't want to see them anymore anyway.

Does this make any sense?

I agree with others that the avatars need to be on the same line as the actual post. They currently use just too much vertical space.

As I have not read all 20 pages of responses I apologize if this has been asked but - is there a way to view our own photos in specific orders (most popular/most recent) or is that very convenient function gone forever?

Is there a "remove all" function so if I decide to leave this site I can take down all 557 of my photos at once - or do I have to remove them individually?

(Top right) My Profile > Photos

Views and likes (previous stars thing, I believe) seem to work, but date added does not.

"Remember me" doesn't.

Mon Jun 20, 2016 7:25 pm

It would seem that "remember me" on the site login page doesn't. I log in, carefully checking "remember me", come back a day later, I have to log in again.

(Safari 9.11 on OS/X 10.11.5).

I'm only visiting once a day since the "upgrade", so I can't tell you if I have to log in *every* time, or if it's a day, or what.

(If I try to visit the forums more than once a day, my eyes ache trying to read past all the blank screen space...)

Photos are being uploaded without the low copyright bar. I'm sure you know it.

Alright. It's been almost a week since the change and have used the forums quite a bit.

The white background and light grey text is really a pain the you know what.

I miss the numbering of thread's replies, especially when reading the quote of another member.

Although there's a way to get to the latest unread post, I miss the old way of displaying read/unread replies.

I think the round where some are displaying a picture of their face or anything else is too large.

I find the repetition of the thread's title really unnecessary. That space could be used to display stuff like the flag of each member, how many friends does the member have as well as the number of posts and date he/she joined the forum.

Although I am citing examples from how the old site was, and yes I would have preferred to still have it, I can understand the need to change it and evolve. However I find the experience of navigating/posting here still not attractive.

Well, when you give your users a $17 theme after a year of promising a great new website, I'm sure we can all take a guess at the type of developers they have here.

I figured I'd take a few days to see if things improved/I changed my mind.. nope, I'm still out. When nearly your entire userbase is screaming that you screwed up, and after nearly a week nothing's changed, well, we can see where this is going.

And of course, not a peep from anyone at DM. The mods get to deal with all the flak...I feel sorry for the poor buggers.

Sucks to see a great site go down like this, but when no one at the top cares about the members (remember the old saying, if something's free, you're probably the product) then they'll have to suffer the consequences of nobody visiting a website they paid $8.2M for and then neglected for ten years.

Oh, and on the topic of "traffic being steady" the alexa rank for this site is 7,944, down 659 over the last 3 months, with a pretty big decline noticed rightttt around the same this abomination went live.

Image

edit: oh, and daily page views per visitor are down 11.20% to 6.50 the last 3 months, bounce rate is up 4% to 35.70%, and search visits down 9% to 11.30%, but yeah, everything's totally fine guys, nothing to see here

For fun, look at the google trends for a.net....seems to take a nice nosedive around the same time DM took over.

Actually, DM staff have been replying on the forums several times since the update.

Alexa ranking has no direct correlation to website traffic. Alexa rank can go down while "traffic" increases.

Looks like the "problems" started before the changes to the website, then.

I will put the thread differentation and avatar location on the fix-list.

Photos --> Search. Type your name in the photographer field. All your photos will pop up. There is a wide variety of options available to sort.

This function does not exist, nor did it on the old site. Removing photos is done by the editors. But I sincerely wish you would reconsider.

Jup, will be sorted soon hopefully.

To put it simple and straight: the old version was better, more functional and with better contrast. This iOS 7 inspired choice is really bad and as Apple is returning to features that make iOS 10 more user friendly, this will happen in time to A.net. Still the users will have to suffer for a few years (as the iOS 7 and Windows 8 users suffered), until the next upgrade will return to the well trusted scheme.

I haven't had a chance to scroll through the numerous pages in this thread so pardon if this wasn't already asked or commented on but does anybody viewing this via computer (as opposed to a Smartphone) keep getting prompted a "Do You Want to Leave this Page" or "Stay on this Page" prompt everytime one clicks on a thread or another page of a thread?

Such seems to unnecessarily create extra steps in the process.
