Yes, blue background color is much better now (Webdesigners should know this fact). But the main problem is the site layout. It still looks like a site for children and not like a professional image database. I can´t see any reason to be happy now and yell out "ohhhh.....now airliners is back.....".....sorry.

I had got used to the white on black and now we're back to white on blue. Oh well, I suppose I'll get used to it again quickly. One big improvement is the removal of the thread heading above each post. That was a complete waste of space. Next, I'd like to see the flags back: while they didn't always reflect the nationality of the poster, they were useful for context, eg someone might make a reference to "here" in a post, and you'd have no way of knowing where they are talking about. Also, the old thread preview icon was handy; that seems to have gone by the wayside altogether, which is a shame. Out of curiosity, has my eyesight just got better or are the avatars now sharper?

Why do you have such an affection for the blue?

Once I learned how to use it, I really enjoyed the "white site" and I was appalled at the reaction to it. I think many people said dreadful things, especially about Demand Media.

I haven't had time to read the entire thread but photo search is not working. It only seems to allow searching by city/airport. Searching by any other criteria such as manufacturer or airline doesn't work.

I have to say, I much prefer the blue site, far easier on my eyes and yes, many people did throw their toys from the pram, but honestly, I think they had every right to, for such a highly visited site the move to the new format was.....Well amateur hour at best.

As to Demand Media, let's also try and be honest here, they have not exactly gone out of their way to capture the hearts of the membership here, ad's I can live with, pop ups amd pop unders not so much. I wish them all the best, but don't hold out much hope for the future with them as owners....

I wonder if they would be interested in selling it ?

Demand Media paid Johan $8.2 million for the site and I think they have every right to try and make a buck. If ads offend you then do as many have done - get an ad blocker, which I did as soon as the old site stopped supporting first class.

And yes, people did throw their toys out of the pram, quite viciously. I don't see many apologising to the Mods, for example, who bore it all valiantly and with great grace, more than I could could have mustered in such circumstances.

Why wouldn't I? This site has been blue for over a decade, of course there is going to be an affection there and on top of that, it is far better and easier on the eye too.

Who gives a damn about Demand Media? They're a corporation, I'm sure they can take a grievances on the chin. Not hormonal women.

So you're saying it can never change, it must always be blue. I find that rather boring. I like it when airlines change liveries, for example, when they move with the times. LOL.

Then there is a gulf between us - you and I - that cannot be bridged. It isn't a matter of whether they can "take it" or not, it says more about the intemperance and irrationality of some of the members. Don't like ads? Easy-peasy - get an ad blocker.

Yes, they're a corporation, and if the site becomes too problematic, they can close it down and write off any losses.

A) That's not what I am saying, I am hoping for the OPTION of other themes. I've seen it on other forums, I don't see why it can't be the case here either. But what it seems you are saying is that you want change for change's sake regardless of it being to the detriment of the vast majority of the userbase...you ever checked out for narcissism? "LOL".

B) Yes, yes, yes...perfect. Purchase a site, produce unnecessary problems, don't correct said mistakes and decide that it is too problematic and hence should shut the site down. So much logic and compassion.

Nope. I'm saying that I liked the change to the white site, partly because I never liked the blue, from when I first joined in 2001.

As to "narcissism," maybe, if that's how you see it, fine, you wouldn't be the first. I try not to sling labels at other people but if you need to do it, at least get it right - try "contrarian." I've spent all of my life, and on a.net, being out of step with majority opinion, and happily so. I've been insulted by people who are good at it. :-)

Since they did respond to majority opinion and changed the site back to blue, I've no idea what point you are trying to make.

The "Blue" advocates won, scorched earth victory, and I, and any others who liked the "white site," will cope with it, but you seem to be saying we should all accept it without comment.

Minor suggestion: Does the yellow "edited" bar on a post need to be so large? It's sort of glaring and "in your face".

On devices where I can't use ad block, the ads are terrible. There is a video near the top right in the middle of the screen, and then vertical banners of ads down each side of the screen as illustrated in below thread. Mine are a lot of Russian and Thai women etc. I don't need or want to see this?! There doesn't seem to be much else. I deem it inappropriate. OK, have ads, but holidays and travel themes would be more appropriate.

I haven't had any problems with the photo search. Just tried again searching for a specific aircraft type, airline, and airport, and it worked fine.

Make sure you click the "Advanced" search link at the upper right of the photo search page.

I use Firefox on a laptop and have found a good way to eliminate the distracting ads down the sides of the screen is to set the page zoom at 133%. It also makes the text more readable. Firefox seems to remember the zoom setting for each site so I don't have to change it each time I log on.

Also, for some reason I am not seeing the usual banner ad across the top of the forum pages since the new site design was launched. I expect that may only be temporary. That ad was much less annoying than the ads down the sides.

Having the blue back is a major improvment.

However I'm still having the irritating issue of having to sign in everytime I visit the site despite have "keep me logged in" checked. Then after signing in it always redirects me to the home page instead of the forum index which is quite annoying.

Also at least on the mobile version posts are no longer numbered at all. While on the earlier version having some ridiculously big number of every post made since 1998! was useless. It would be quite handy to replies numbered in relation to that particular thread.

Also mobile version again there is no way of going to last unread post from the forum index like there was with the asterisk you now have to go into the thread first.

Another feature I'm glad to see return is a list of similar threads at the bottom. If you're looking for an answer to a specific question it may not be in thread you're looking in but you can easily locate similar older threads that might have what you're looking for.

There was an issue with the search engine yesterday, after an unrelated update caused some issues. This has since been resolved.

On the homepage and photos section the return of the A.net Blue is also a priority, plus the ability to open a large or a medium sized photo directly, which I was a heavy user of.

- There is a small square box with an arrow in the top right corner. Clicking it will get you the dropdown menu to jump forum.
- The homepage blue will return as well. When it does, the forum and homepage headers will be unified again.

@All, the search box appears to be broken. I've alerted the developers to this and asked for it to be treated with high priority.

Just found that "jump to" box to change forums. It's very hard to see against the blue background. Suggest make it more visible (although the earlier suggestion to make the FORUM link at upper left a drop-down list of forums would be more intuitive).

One more readability issue -- when you quote another reply that also includes a quote, the oldest quote is in a white box. No problem with that but the text in that box seems very light and fuzzy and hard to read.

The searches are still not working properly.

Before the colour change if you typed a photographer name in the photographer box ( I was looking for a particular one of my own) the name would appear, though they did seem to be in an irrational order.
Now it will simply default to all photographers making it impossible to find the one I wanted - there are a lot of the type on the database, not very many by me !

I did eventually find what I was looking for by putting the aircraft type Orlik, Bajcar in the keywords box but the Photographer box no longer works.

As an aside, if you change the way images are displayed to listing them rather than side by side, portrait images display properly and the page displays well. Much smaller thumbs and the info and comment the way it used to be and I could live with the page like that......I think

The font color of the posts now seem to be in pure white #FFFFFF whereas before they were light gray #C4C8CC. Wayback machine has A.net posts from over 15+ years ago with the light gray color value #C4C8CC. I think the light gray should be re-implemented as the main font color as the pure white is not as soothing on the eyes as the light gray IMO!

Maybe the light gray could be brought back as the change was made only very recently (matter of hours) and it would keep with the old A.net style!

I guess I'm on the losing side again. The white looks fine to me, especially after all the drama about legibility on the white site that we've just been through.

Throughout history, the reading standard has been black/dark blue on white - books, newspapers, most magazines -as a published writer, that's how I want my text to appear and the reverse of that would seem to be what we have on a.net now.

I really don't understand this push to make the new site just like the old site - which had plenty of flaws but seems to be regarded as some as a sort of sacred example.

I've said my piece, I'll just shrug and shut up.

Except, and it was discussed millions times since, for 4000 years people used to read black on white, but said white reflects light, doesn't emit it.

It has exactly the same effect on me. I can easily read the white on dark blue here just as I could easily read the black font (that I used) on white on the recent white site.

I fully agree! I think these videos is what ruins A.net the most. But it's not only on the forum. It's so annoying to have this "sponsored content" under each and every photo when I'm scrolling down to read the photo details.
I'm OK with ads, because after all it's a commercial website, but please make them static, not flickering/moving and definitely no auto-start videos!

Also I think I found another bug, because I'm not seeing any ads on this page: https://www.airliners.net/about-us/. That can't be right...

Speaking of photo details, I preferred the way it was at the old website. Now it almost takes up the full screen. There's way too much white space.

When clicking on links placed in posts these links open up in the same tab. I know you can select the option "open in new tab" but I for one would find it better if the links would automatically open in a new tab. Is this something which can be changed in the new software of the site?

I use Chrome as my primary browser and I downloaded a (free) extension ap from the Google Chrome store called Disable HTML5 Video so the auto-playing videos don't start up as soon as I open a thread. In my case I am trying to limit bandwidth usage because of my satellite metered connection but it also makes the site less 'busy to the eyes'.

New colors and layout looks great!

My only major issue still standing is with the whole bookmarking/subscribing thing. First, there doesn't seem to be any difference between the two, unless the user chooses to set them up differently. Both can be set up with notifications via the site or email. Second, I really really miss being able to scroll through a forum and see my "starred" topics - the ones I found interesting.

So I propose bringing that back somehow, using the bookmarks. So the way I'd use it is bookmarks are for ones that I want to be "starred" or somehow marked on the forum and subscriptions are for ones that I want to be notified on (and presumably also see marked on the forum).

I've put this on the list as high priority. I hope the developers will check this out soon.

I fully agree. It's been on the lsit for a while, but I made another entry that is grouped with the rest of the forum suggestions. Should be relatively easy to solve I'd say.

I've put your second suggestion on the list. As for the first one, have you seen this yet, which explains bookmarking/subscribing? faq.php#f8r0

Thanks for your effort, patience and many quick responses regarding the introduction of the new site! :)

First of all sorry if I've missed the answer to the following questions:

When will we be able to check where our images are in the upload queue?

Is it possible to change information on an image once it's been accepted?

I'm still less then happy with the way my images are now presented on the new site, will the site
ever improve anywhere to the quality it use to be? Having uploaded many images over the past 10 years or so,
it's very disappointing to say the least to see how the new site looks, and the way my images are presented on it!

They weren't really 2 different suggestions. Merely an observation, then a suggestion. But thank you.

And as for that FAQ, I did see it. But it's what spawned my post, because it didn't make any sense. "You can be notified when a bookmarked topic is updated. Subscribing, however, will notify you when there is an update". The answer pretty much says they are one in the same (Except you can also subscribe to a whole forum too.), but incorrectly uses the word "however". Very confusing.

Bookmarking gives a notification via rhe bell, subscribe will send you an email. Those can be turned on and off in the forum settings

Hi Terry,

For your first question, please see this thread: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1337571
Second; Yes and no. The editor tools still have an issue as far as I know and that needs to be fixed before they can process corrections. If you wish, you can send them en E-mail at editors[at]airliners.net with your correction and they can process it as soon as they are able. In the future, there will be a 'wrench' tool underneath every photo, which will work just about the same as on the old site (for submitting corrections).
Photos will be sorted too, as the copyright bar will definitely return (hopefully sooner than later), some thumbnails are currently cropped awkardly and portrait photos don't display well as thumbnail. Those are the 3 most pressing issues regarding photo I think. There are a few more things that need to be sorted, but if you have anything specific you want us to dig into, please let me know.

From the looks of it, both bookmarking and subscribing can do both. The forum settings allow each person to choose if they want bookmarks to be emailed and/or notified via the bell AND if they want subscriptions to emailed and/or notified via the bell. So it sounds to me like there's a duplicate feature. Just silliness!

Now if you want to claim it adds flexibility and customization, sure I suppose so. But it sure as hell creates a lot of confusion meanwhile.

Hi Airkas1

Thanks for the reply.

It seems an awfully long winded way of checking where your images are in the queue. Will the old statistic type page be back again? I do hope so.
Did this not cross anyone's minds before the new site came online, that photographers who kindly upload to the site would like to know
where there photos are in the queue? It's been sometime now since the new site has been online, but what I can see is that not a great deal has
actually changed with the photo part of the site, this is my concern being a photographer!

Looks like the date format (less than a minutes, four hours ago, etc) has the correct values but isn't reflecting the right value when it is less than an hour. It shows correct when hovered over but the displayed text shows last year.

Also, thank you for the change back to a dark background. Would it be possible to change the color of the navigation pane (where it shows what forum you are currently in)? I think perhaps the reference is looking at the wrong color code but it seems odd to have it be darker blue on blue.

Simple, if I want an email I click subscribe, if I want a notification I bookmark. If I change my mind I can. With only a bookmark option I would have to go to settings to enable email, or if there is only A subscribe option I would have to go to settings to turn them off. How is that better than having the choice like it is now?

This post is to thank everyone who has helped to make the site look like it does now! I'm very appreciative of the blue that has returned and look forward to seeing the other fixes implemented for the things that are being worked on. I've read through all of the posts in this thread and there were lots of complaints in the beginning about the changes to the site but then many posts by crew members about further changes to come to make things better and we are now seeing many of those changes which is awesome!

Thanks again to everyone working to make the site better! Also a personal thanks to airkas1 who I think has probably the largest percentage of posts in this thread (along with JohnKrist maybe) in response to community feedback as well as his constant updating of the Issues FAQ thread which is much appreciated!

Again thanks to all and hopefully more changes will start to roll out soon like updates to the homepage!

You sure have a way of taking some "simple" and making it complicated.

My point is that I can totally change the definitions of "bookmark" and "subscribe" in my profile to be the opposite of what you just said, so defining them in the FAQ, or anywhere else, is pointless.

I still think (and suggest) that bookmarks be reserved for those that the user simply wants starred on the forum list. I, personally, don't think the word "bookmark" should be associated with a "notification" of any sort, whether via the bell or email. But that's just me.

Now that the forums are just about fixed with the new colour (well done) the photo search is not really working. I love Boeing 707s and when I type this
into search or photo index I'm only getting about 155 B707 photos to look at. I know from the old site their were at least 10,000 photos of B707s.
Would like to know WHY?
What is also very annoying I get a mix of other aircraft other than B707s.
Would like to know WHY?

If you click on "Advanced" and select the individual 707 models (100/200/300/400), you will get all the photos for each of the models. When I did it model by model now I get:
707-100 - 1,133 photos
707-200 - 15 photos
707-300 - 11,086 photos
707-400 - 379 photos
Total - 12,613 photos (not counting 720).

I've previously noticed (and mentioned it in one comment) that searching using the "Basic type", e.g. "707-..." doesn't work right. Selecting that entry should generate all 12,000+ photos for all 707 models, but for some reason it only results in 16 photos. Same thing if you use the "Generic type" box on the right with "707-..."

Searching was easier in the old site, but with a little effort I have been able to find all the photos. It mainly seems to be whatever the problem is with searching by the basic/generic type entries.

It would also help if there was a "reset" button to delete all the photo search entries so you can start over. Once you've entered something, for example in the aircraft type/model drop-down list, it seems difficult to get rid of it to change it to something else. In the old site you could start typing in the search box and it would jump to that place in the alphabet. It no longer seems to do that so you you have to scroll from the beginning, possibly through hundreds of entries.

And for some reason, scrolling in those drop-down lists only seems to work using the arrow keys but not the Page Up/Page Down keys (using Firefox and Windows 10 if it makes any difference).
