I wonder which redesign got more flack: the new AA or the new airliners.net...

I love it! With the old blue background of the old site my boss knew when i wasn't working when i was reading the forums.

With the new white background it blends in beautifully with my other "work" items...

So I like it it....thanks Airliners

Perhaps it's worth setting black as the default font colour too.

Is there going to be an option to edit posts?

*Just found the edit function. Sorry!

Thanks. I will try it again here..

Worked that time! Thanks for the feedback. I typed one reply and I don't know where it went.

Maybe typing in bold or larger font may help with the vision issues of black on white. I agree the old site was much softer on the eyes.

My eyes hurt. And I'm unable to change the death skull (why the hell they would use that in the first place I don't know, perhaps an airplane would have been more appropriate?), and I'v tried everything. The 3 bars icon in the corner doesn't do a thing. Maybe someone has already explained it, but like I said my eyes hurt to read any further. Can I have my money back? I don't see myself visiting often anymore, other than to just browse pictures.

Took me a while to find it too, but it's under bookmarks in your profile settings, or you can just bookmark this link :

ucp.php?i=ucp_main&mode=bookmarks

Not sure what the difference is between 'bookmark topic' and 'subscribe to topic' are though. They both appear to do the same thing. Those are the 2 icons you have at the top right corner of every page of the thread - the star button having the same functionality as the 'watched topics' star in the old site.

I can find no way to edit my profile.. maybe an instruction manual is needed for use old farts.

Edit profile by clicking the head icon in top right corner then click 'settings'. There are various tabs in there to change stuff.

There doesn't appear to be a shortcut button for starred topics though which is poor. Unless I'm missing something the only way to view starred (bookmarked) topics is via SETTINGS > FORUM > MANAGE BOOKMARKS. When you're on that page you can save the URL in your browser bookmarks which will take you straight to the page in future instead of going via the settings menus. Imho there should be a button to take you straight to your bookmarked topics but if there is I can't find it. Anyone? :?

OK, to answer to my own question, notifications of replies to subscribed or bookmarked topics appears in the bell icon next to the skull. It will show a number on the bell. First though you have to make sure in SETTINGS > FORUM > BOARD PREFERENCES > EDIT NOTIFICATION OPTIONS you have your notifications turned on for either via email or on the site, or both. If you have them checked then you won't get any. :D

For those of you whining about how the old site was much better and this minor feature or that way of browsing is missing, keep this in mind:

This is a total change from what appeared to be a highly customized (possibly custom-built) forum software to a product that is more or less off-the-shelf but has regular updates to keep up with code standards and web technology.

If you're crying "if it wasn't broke, don't fix it" the answer to you is: it WAS broken. The old forum was years behind modern standards and half the time it DIDN'T WORK. The search function completely failed, if I wanted to update my profile I'd have to make sure I was using exactly the right browser at exactly the right time of day for the change to actually go through, and don't even talk to me about trying to use the site between different computers, because it relied SOLELY on user-side cookies for storing what posts you'd read in a topic.

I will agree with those who've said the color scheme could be better. The Respected User rating was a nice feature, but it's probably something that could be added on via a modification to the forum's new software at a later time.

The important thing is, now that I've learned where the important functions are, it WORKS.

That's how IT people do things: get it to work, add extra features later.
Make something Idiot-proof, and the Universe will make a more inept idiot.

There are too many changes at once. It will take a long time to get used to the new layout. The pictures don't have a bar with the photographer's name at the bottom and look blurry in full screen mode. The website is too bright and has too much empty space as others have mentioned. The old color was so much better imo - It was like a night mode. Finally, where is the check for new replies button?

Can we at least have a "classic view" option, please? :|

It's the start of the demise of Anet IMO. The layout defeats the purpose so many of us use this site for. Too much clicking, too much scrolling, it's a disaster without major changes.

It's unfortunate what they have done. It seems like 70% or so the comments are in the negative.

It's sad, truly sad, been coming here since I was 11 years old, and now, I'm just not sure given how much more time consuming and non-user friendly the site is. It's just another forum now, plenty of other options on the internet if that is what Anet will be, just another website.

Let's not get into the major copyright issues the photographers have right now.

I hope so too - that there will be design changes by tomorrow morning. The moderators haven't posted since early this afternoon (Pacific time). Who knows whether they or the developers are actually seeing the long list of serious concerns.

They could have changed the source code without changing that much the template. The template is catastrophic and it's not just the colors. The readibility is really bad. You can have pages like that on a forum with let say 20-30 members. But not a forum with thousands of members.

Just change the template.

Horrible "enhancement".
The readability of the site is terrible, the layout is awful for laptop/desktop users.
So much wasted space, so many more page clicks.

I do not like this change at all!!

I've been on this site since 2000-ish. I started coming here less as the forums continued to devolved into harsh fanboyish and trolling, but I may be done with it after all these changes.

Complete disaster! While there are definitely some good new features, the site has lost the simplicity of it's use. I use the site for researching certain aircraft that requires loading up multiple shots of the same aircraft across the tabs. I have spent the past 20 minutes trying to figure out how to do this and have had zero luck. Extremely frustrating.

Second issue many have bought up is the contrast. Not easy on the eyes.

I don't like it at all. I have been coming here for more than a decade , now the site is almost unusable. I can see why people moved from the older software to the new one. But the good thing is the issues I have are due to configuration and I guess could be fixed more easily than what I imagine you had to do to get the forum use the new software. The new forum software is more responsive.

First and biggest issue I have . The colours are too bright. Just too white, I get a headache. It is heavy on the eyes. Could we go back to the older colours. I fondly remember the blue colours. Or make the white background a bit less bright. Maybe go a bit like reddit grayish if the blue is out. This could be an option too.

Other things less important.

I agree with a lot of posters so far. The old site was great for desktop. This site isn't. I can see you will be generating more ad revenue which you deserve, but it would be a shame if fewer users used it because of the layout.

Please set up the forum index page to allow for a longer list of topics - the old set up must have had 100 topics on one page. This is what i will miss the most.

This is about the worst possible way you could have redesigned the site. It is clunky, cluttered, slow and looks like garbage. As a comparison, Flyertalk has a better interface, despite being a much older site of this style - and that site doesn't hold a candle to the old A.net for speed, ease of use and look. The old site worked just fine on mobile or desktop and was extremely fast, as Johan designed it to work decently with people who still had dial up connections. Seriously, this is terrible.

Yep, same here, I went through a similar issue with a website I ran, the big boss loved the "Apple white on white" look, great when you're a kid, not so great when you're an old fart like me.

The old site was one of the few I really liked the colors of.

First impressions, not keen, does not appear to be as user friendly as the old site.

Dislike the colours, too bland.
Dislike the lack of threads showing on the screen, the new ones are far too wise.
Seems, on first use, to be more difficult to follow threads as new posts are made.

All in all, could actually spend less time here which is a shame.

I really don't like this. It's hard on the eyes with its brightness. I found the dark theme of a.net to be more pleasing. If they could, perhaps, include a dark theme option for this board, that would make things a whole lot better. Something we could set in the "board settings" or somesuch so that it appears darker to those who prefer that. I've seen other sites have options like that for different forum skins.
