Changes need to be made.

Wed Jun 15, 2016 11:06 am

Note the way I changed the subject. Should that even be allowed when you're responding to a thread?

Bolding seems to be the only way to enhance the contrast.

Mobile is much better.

I miss seeing all the recent topics neatly laid out on one page.

The website definitely works better on mobile, undoubtedly optimized for it. Likewise, the contrast on mobile is great.

As for the desktop version, they need to get rid of all the empty white space, to tighten up the look of the overall pages. Otherwise it makes it very hard to read. Also the color palette needs to change as it makes it incredibly difficult on the eyes to scroll through the grey text on the white background.

I really hope that migrating to a new, easier to use platform on the backend will make room for constant updates to the site. This is a rocky start, but the potential for a beautifully designed and intuitive website is here.

Reading through all the posts on this thread should give the team a ton of features to work on. Some of them need to be prioritized for immediate release as they prohibit daily use from members that have been a part of this community for decades.

maybe needed to fix stuff for mobile users. but us old farts do not like change. especially when it hurts my eyes.

Indeed. The new forum is based on phpBB.

After the initial surprise, it seems to be better overall
Good Points/Likes
1. More Modern
2. Better Mobile experience
3. My Bookmarks and the associated Notifications work well

Bad Points/Dislikes
1. Colour Palette on PC is too washed out
2. Header information repeating is too prominent
3. The actual post is in too small a font. ( Maybe swap the font size for Header and Post )

As previous posters have said, give it a couple of weeks before moaning too much

The Eurowhite issue could be solved in approximately 5 seconds by the administrator installing a blue theme in the control panel which we'd then be able to select in our user profile under 'themes'.

I have been around this site - specifically these civil forums - for eleven (!) years.
And something HAD to change - rapidly.
The site (and all of us) lost, over the years, too many good members because of too many nonsenses - mostly related some difficulty to control the never ending A vs B rivalry and everything that often comes with it. The end of "flags and countries" contribute to stop it.
Most importantly, the site had to find a more efficient way of staying alive - i.e., making money. Attract new members and welcome pub. Give it a fresh look.
So I mostly welcome the changes. Mostly.
I do believe that most of the site (graphic) identity is lost - and that is can only be an undesirable consequence. The change of colours was to dramatic. The choices made (mostly black, white and grey) are - at least - hard to understand.
Hope some corrections can (still) be made.

Best Regards
Nelson

Just don't like this new set-up.

The largely white font on deep-blue background layout was very distinctive, easy to read and the more condensed format made it very easy to quickly pick out the 'wheat from the chaff' of what you actually wanted to read.

I read the red script as a 'warning' that you should not read this post; (although that's probably the 'bean-counter' in me).

It appears you no longer need to be a paying member to post. (I am speaking from short-lived experience). I am surprised to find no one mentioning this because I know a lot of people who regularly browse, but have never wanted to pay to be able to contribute. If this new transition allows non-paying members (like myself) to post, I think it will only increase participation and new commitment. Of course with that comes the possibility for distinct drawbacks as well. I know many sites require a minimum amount of participation before members are allowed to post new threads. A-net was able to limit the spammy / off-topic / novice posts by requiring payment. Unless this fee structure change is a temporary fluke, I think it will do more to change the site than the design itself.

I agree that it is not perfect, but I think it is much more user friendly. Ugly? A little. Complicated? At first, yes. However, once you play around with it, it becomes fairly easy to navigate. The revamp of the website was clearly to allow for more ads...thus more $$$. Welcome to 2016. Every website out there is trying to find ways to supplement operating costs in exchange for offering a free website.

Yeesh!

After 20 years of lurking, I finally joined just now in the hope of finding a dark theme as one of the user options... No such luck, unfortunately.

This new look is really, really hurting my eyes and is literally hard to read! I hate the current trend of having 10% barely legible content in 90% bright white emptiness.

And all the talk of being better for mobiles just shows that peoples' mobile browsers are rubbish. I still use the old Opera Mobile (the version before they changed to Chromium-with-a-skin) and it had absolutely no problem in reformatting the old site for perfect mobile browsing.

Sometimes tech trends really are the opposite of progress...

I am only an Aviation fan and as such never signed up as I have nothing to ad, but thouroughly enjoyed the site over many years. I have directed others at the site in the past and they have paid so indirectly I paid my dues.

What was a very simple and compact site has now become a huge fail. As an it professional myself, forum moderator and website hoster, I know how soul destroying that statement must be to the mods and developers who must have worked so hard to bring everything across, bu how can you have missed the mark so completely?

On a phone the site is OK but how many of your regular members use that platform? You will know by checking the server logs

You might think that the Flat borderless look and low contrast shades as perpetuated my Windows 10 are "modern" but most users really either do not care or just think there are no better alternatives. in Reality for those in the UI sphere they are so bad it it not funny. the lack of contrast makes it real hard to read and quickly take in the subject.

The fonts and items are far TOOO large, So much whitespaces and wasted screen realestate it is not funny. Previously I could see on 1 screen a full days worth of threads, where now in Civil AV I can only see the top line and now have to scroll and click links to see any content.

In the threads, you used to be able to see on the one screen where now so much scrolling thru nothing!

as phpbb administrator myself I knwo that there are far more attractive and useful templates to use. Please implement something else rapidly before losing many more of your members.

I am off to pprune with its ugly, but much more user friendly template

See ya

Re: New Site. Outline of needed improvements

Wed Jun 15, 2016 12:51 pm

After having the day to consider the new design I have decided that overall, it has potential to be a great modern forum, but currently there are too many issues that make use too tedious to be enjoyable.

These are
- The most apparent is the colour scheme is very poor. The white is too bright, and the font colour and size too light. This makes the forum actually literally physically painful to read. I'm in my early 20s and I haven't been able to spend more than 5 minutes without the muscles behind my eyes feeling sore and strained and then getting a headache, while I could browse and read the old one, and other forums for hours on end. I feel sorry for the many older folk on here. And this is on my iPad. It's even worse on my fuzzy laptop screen. The worst part of this is I am not learning, because it's too hard to read

The rest are more minor in that they may be slightly annoying but don't actually make the site unusable like the colour scheme does (why would I want to use a site that actually causes physical pain)

-the title of the forum repeated in every post is the most dominating aspect of every post. I know what I'm reading about thank you, I don't need to be constantly reminded. What I do want to see is who the poster is, and where they are from. Currently everyone is anonymous as my eyes just gloss over the faint little text that lists the username. The sizing between this and the forum title needs to be swapped.
- Adding the flag was a really nice feature as it added context to their point of view. It was interesting reading about say, German aviation issues and seeing the forums German members putting in their point of view. The lack of this is quite a big loss. I don't agree with the poster above (can't say who as again the username is so small and irrelevant in the post) saying the lack of this feature will reduce flame wars, as people will still feel the need to add their opinions.
The number of topics on the first page is probably too small, particularly for Civ AV. 100 is a better number than 50, or have it so you can load more topics without actually navigating to the next page (as on Avsim)
- It would be great if we could go back to the style of all posts on one page, and have the ability for them to be collapsible. Don't know if it's possible in the software, I've never seen it outside ANet, but worked well for our discussions. Minor issue.
- Clearer markings on what threads/posts we have read, what we have posted in and what we are following.
- Something to identify mods and staff.

Most of this stuff is actually quite minor. The foundation is solid. I really hope the staff take into account these areas of dissatisfaction that are commonly occurring in these threads on the new site. We are the users, it would be smart business to listen to our concerns.

Indeed. The new forum is based on phpBB.

Is there no way this feature could have been added during development? I would have thought the developers would want to retain as many features of the old site as they could

Someone can say where I find the info about my pic statistic (with graphics) and where is the page that shows the location of my pics in queue (so I know when the pics will be screened?)...?? I have read some reply of Airliners Crew Support to justify the new format (in the face of countless critics of the members who use the site).......but let me say.....the new site in addition to be not attractive and very confusing, it lost a lot of important informations for all members who use the site to upload their pics !!

I can give you the template for free (and after you can adjust to your own needs like changing the langage  ). I can't give you the link to our website publicly because I wan't to remain anonymous but I can show you a copy of the template somewhere. Let me know if you are interested.

No.... definitly this new grafic is not usable: first the colours are too bright, too much white and this will cause eye strain. Could we go back to the older blu colours. Then I Dislike the lack of threads showing on the screen, the new ones are far too wise.
Seems, on first use, to be more difficult to follow threads as new posts are made, I miss the fact that before everything was 'compact' and clearly visible on the home pageand in a second you could find everything you want....now is all in confusing....
Can we open a petition to change it to the old pattern? Please do Something, anything will be better than this!!! Never change the winning team, now is AIRLINERS.NOT!!

The new site for the first time allows me to select my most appropriate national flag (Jersey, Channel Islands) instead of the default UK flag that I used before - but flags are no longer displayed!

Please can we have the flags back.

As a longtime reader (Since 2009) and a first time poster, the website is definitely more optimized for mobile which is the way the world is going. I do read on both, and the experience seems more compressed on desktop than it has to be.

My major issue is the font size. It's inconsistent.

The latest posts in the Irish Aviation thread are in a tiny font size (don't know if people have set it that way, or it's a bug), whereas in here there is everything from a normal size I cannot see, to large. which jumps off the page.

It makes it impossible to read at a distance.

yeah, what's the logic behind the floating mobile menu icon on mobile when the top bar containing the same mobile menu trigger is fixed, thus always available. Sorry, the site is too white for my liking and the ads are too prominent. Could have just mobile enabled the old version. Done.

I'm sorry but it looks like a cheap template poorly modified.

Poor contrast (will not pass min contrast accessibility standards), buttons that truncate the text (sign up button - certain device widths), tiny text on mobile, too much uppercase...I can go on

Very disappointing and not easy, just seems too busy. I know i won't be on this site that much anymore. Very sad.

I agree with most of what was said here regarding the color scheme but especially the density of the content. Unfortunately for me (exclusively using desktop) the new site is barely usable, and I will not be able to visit as frequently as I did. It's unfortunate because I loved checking out a.net a few times a day, having a good view of all the recent threads without needing to scroll and click next page endlessly. Part of what made a.net unique was its familiar and easy to use (if not to maintain) prehistoric layout, now it's just another forum like all the others. Personally, I have never stayed very long on phpBB-style boards, nor do I visit any regularly. It's not just user friendly to scroll through pages and pages to find threads, posts, etc. But even assuming I could get past that barrier, for me here are the main issues:

* Density of the content: on my desktop, I can only see three threads without scrolling. I tested this on my laptop too, and I cannot see a SINGLE thread without scrolling. The top bar is huge, no doubt partly because of the new forums announcement, and this website was clearly designed for mobile use and the ability to tap.
* Color scheme and text size inappropriate compared to the size of other elements. Just writing this post is giving me a headache.
* Inability to browse all posts from a thread in a single page;
* The loss of the airport and airline hover feature--yes it was sometimes broken, but still very useful;
* And a few minor bugs:
** Logging in when coming from the "reply" button does not bring me back to the thread;
** Cannot select parts of a post and then press the "quote" button, it takes the whole post.

Overall it was probably too dramatic and sudden of a change. I realize the previous software didn't allow for easy incremental updates to a modern website, so I hope that the new one can facilitate the fixes that are required. For sure there is an element of surprise and an initial knee jerk reaction, as happens with new airline liveries for example, and yes, maybe most of us will get used to it... but I don't think I personally could if at least some of the things listed above don't change.

Perhaps the most pressing fix would be to have an option for users to select a much higher density desktop user interface for the forum. An added plus would be if this interface had the legacy color scheme.

All this said, the new "responsive" site is undoubtedly much better for mobile users, which was probably a.net's intention as they finally step into the 21st century.

The thing that needs to be fixed immediately is the ability for anyone to sign up and start posting.

Previously, with various types of memberships, there was an exclusivity to the community, at least somewhat regulated. Now, there will be so many trolls and new accounts made simply to post in hate and slander, just watch.

Mods, please regulate this ASAP. It should be one of the top things on the to-do list.

I am so indescribable sorry I allowed Airliners.net to become so important part of my life. I am sorry because of spending so much time and investing all that effort in every of my posts. Why?
If I had not created such a relationship with the Forum, my whole sorrow and disappointment by that what I am looking at in front of me in this moment would be incomparably smaller.
There is so much I still wanted to write and post, but in a moment I've lost the will for everything ... just everything.
I don´t know; maybe the time has come to say 'Goodbye'... just another wonderful, but too early completed, story of my life.

Nice regards

Mario

P.S. I'm not giving up. Something does not allow me to do that. I have survived two armies, one war, the loss of many loved ones, 206 blood donations, and for our Old forum I will fight by praying to God for it to come back as it was. I don´t know how else...
I just want to open my eyes realizing that it was nothing but a bad dream...

Horrible, Much too much wasted space

1. Every single post in a thread now has a HUGE header (thread title repeates, (currently empty for most) avatar etc) while teh real content has dminished space. It was MUCH better when the repeated info was to the left of each post, so that one could quickly read from one post to the next. After all, content is easily a few lines, so one has sufficient vertical space for all that on teh left, while putting it inline with the mesage body wastes that vertical space.

2. The thread listing must be MUCH more compact to be useful,

3. One should have the ability to reduce fonts etc, to get more content.

4. The edit bar (bold, italic etc) also wastes too much (grey) space, is too large etc.

Frankly, this is a disater that means I will not read A.net as much, as it takes much more effort (both for the eyes/brain and the scrolling hands on the keyboard or mouse) just to read.

Is the intention was to drive readers away, I think this is successful

Like a lot of people have said; I do not like the white.... The forum looks cheap, maybe to some that means modern, but I think it looks cheap. It looks terrible on desktop.

I miss the "star" feature, the flags and reply number on the forums. The star and numbers made the forums easier to use. As far as the flag went I enjoyed knowing where people were from. That little flag gave me the feel that this was a true international forum. Now everyone is the same. Regardless of what some people think we are not citizens of the world. Where you are from contributes a lot to your outlook on the world.

Are there still pay memberships? I can't find any link to pay. I was a first class member for a long time and for a while I was getting it for free, because there was no way to renew. I would still gladly pay for the site if it means getting rid of all the ads.

Usually I say change is good. This..... Hmmm a little different to say the least. Not a fan of the Forum at all. As with many of the complaints I have to agree. The Colour Choice wasn't a great idea. its way to bright. Scrolling through and through the posts takes for ever as the fonts are way to big now. Keep all the new, but bring the old forum back.

I'm willing to give the revised site a chance. One positive is that on the photo search screen you can now search by photographer which you couldn't do on the old version.

Like the larger format but I really miss the Photo Tracker option. Part of my morning routine was to log on and look at all of the photos that had been uploaded since my last visit and sort from oldest year to newest year. Doesn't seem to be possible any more. Also, I'm a First Class member and even though I've logged in I still have ads all over the screen. Hope this can be fixed and the Photo Tracker added back in. :?

It seems obvious to me that readership will decrease greatly.

I don't know about overall viewership, especially those who mostly come in to post/view photography, but what was just yesterday the greatest and busiest internet aviation forum will take a major hit in audience.

Despite the obvious readability/colors/contrast/eye torture issue, there is the fact that the old forum was so busy that the 100 or so thread per page were in fact necessary to sustain the volume of posting. Threads that made it to page 2 were virtually dead in the water (except those long term production/delivery threads), and that happened within less than 2 days of not getting any replies!

This layout is simply not designed to handle the load. Threads will move to page 2 so quickly some won't even have a chance to get a reply (let's face it, like Google results, few are ever interested to check out what goes on in page 2).
And now even he threads themselves are separated into pages...
This setup works well on forums with less activity, but A.net isn't/wasn't one of these.
I predict that the ridiculously ample pagination is simply not suited to the forum traffic this site used to host under its denser form, and that it will consequently lose many posters and its interest and value as the be-all / end-all of aviation forums. I hope I'm wrong.

But for now, for the love of ophtalmology, change these colors!

Has anybody checked their profile? When clicking on Followers / Following my REAL NAME has been showing without my consent. That's a privacy breach. :!:
Just erasing and hitting SAVE won't change it. You got to put an alias.

Wow, this is certainly quite a thorough change from the previous website. I'm still navigating through it and can't give a 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down' on it just yet. By the way, I'm a brand new member after being a longtime forum reader and photograph browser.
