The thing is were any of the key stakeholders consulted on the changes? I would have thought the members of the photographer community would have been consulted on the changes and whether it was worth proceeding.

That is not normal. I have added that to our list of issues, and the developers are aware of this issue.

Can you please let me know which browser you use, as well as operating system. I will add that to the ticket and it will help our developers solve the issue.

Thanks for your reply! I am using the "Chrome"-Browser and my operating system is "Windows 10". Btw it is not possible to share a link to my website in my profile. ;) The link is not working.

Glad to hear! We like it too, and believe that once we get past these initial teething issues and get some kinks ironed out, the majority of the membership will be pleased with a much more stable and functional website.

None of the issues that have been reported are unworkable. They are all very fixable, and most are in the process of being fixed.

Compare this to the old site, with ancient code and problems that plagued the site for years that were literally unworkable with the old setup.

Airliners.net is positioned for success over the coming years with a stable backend and supporting coding. We can and will have the cosmetic and frontend issues fixed.

Thank you for your support.

With the best will in the world, it's starting to lose me. I'm old, I only speak a little computer language and I can't work out how to do some simple things - such as getting rid of the offensive "death skull" avatar beside my user name. It is beyond my understanding that you would choose something that looks like a Nazi symbol as the default avatar, especially when it first appeared this week-end after the Orlando shootings.

Starting at the beginning, the little sign saying "change avatar" simply brings me back to the civ-av front page.

I've sent an email to support for help in getting rid of it but I've heard nothing yet, so this morning I wasted an hour in trying to change it. I assume - only assume - that it is something to do with my profile picture (is it?) but every time I try to change that, I am told the image is too large (okay) or a smaller version of the exact same image is dismissed as too small. WTF? A couple times it has taken me to "crop" so I crop and it looks good or acceptable, but it won't save.

Similarly, why choose grey on white as the font colour and why such a small font? I've tried to change again, but - again - I cannot work out how to do it and I get bored trying to read things that are so lacking in contrast.

I've been with a.net a very long time, coped with everything that has been thrown at me but I am becoming increasingly irritable about this new version

We are working on a Sticky/FAQ to organize the issues that are being worked on. This will provide an easy way for everyone to see what is going on.

While I don't know and can't promise what colors might end up being changed, it is on the current priority list for the developers.

It is just behind some other critical items such as names showing publicly when they aren't supposed to, as well as some issues with photo copyright bars not appearing as they should.

We are doing our best to answer. Please keep in mind we are volunteers, and we are doing our best to keep up. I am posting this while foregoing my lunch break at work. I'll eat later tonight when I get home.

All feedback is currently being forwarded to the development team at Demand Media, and all issues are being tracked internally and updated as we get updates from the web team.

Thanks

While you might be a volunteer someone isn't and those are the persons who should be addressing all these concerns. Advertising is live and generating income, and we've all seen reports of how much income is generated in public forums. It is stated that feedback is being monitored 24/7, however that feedback needs to flow back to the members too and in a timely fashion. Again someone is making money, nobody needs to be volunteering their time without reward.

I imagine trying to maintain the old site would be more or less tantamount to an airline trying to maintain a fleet of L-1011s in 2016!

After you click Save and nothing happens, scroll down slowly to see if any fields are highlighted in red. Fill those in and then hit Save. It should work now as it did for me.

Not a bad comparison. You fix the fuel leak on the left engine, and then the right navigation light falls off. It was a good site for its time, but quickly became dated.

This new forum software will be much easier to maintain going forward, and once we get through the migration teething issues we should all be using a better site than before. There is light at the end of the tunnel if you choose to see it.

Thanks for your support and patience.

That's the problem - there's isn't a "save" button to click after I crop. The only two buttons that appear are "crop" (again) and "cancel."

What really foxes me is that a smaller version of the exact same image is dismissed as "too small."

Eventually, you were right. I scrolled down, as you said, and there were no other fields to be filled in, nothing marked in red, and under the image I was trying to upload, there was only "crop" (again) or "cancel."

So I scrolled down again and at the very bottom of the page there was a "save" button. It didn't seem to relate to the image, but I hit it anyway and lo - it worked. Thank you. :-)

So far I've only had issues the first time I've gone into a thread that I hadn't checked since the switch, but there may be a bug in there somewhere. This is a HUGE forum, it wouldn't surprise me if some database cleanup work is needed.

Also, when I quote something from another post, the whole post is quoted.

That's endemic to the phpBB system. A little editing in your reply can easily fix it.

Still can't figure out why each post has the "Re:" line above it - this is clutter, which is a no-no in good design. Also, it's in an 18pt typeface, while the poster's name appears underneath in 14pt and is lost in the clutter.

The Re: line is also endemic to phpBB. You'll note, when you reply you can change it. The formatting is a matter of the skin being used. If you go into your user control panel there IS a second option, but I haven't tried it yet.

Link to the "Site Related" forum is missing in the "Forums" drop-down list.

I only found the link by accident near the top of the page after clicking on the "Response to Community Feedback on Site Upgrade" page.

The re line can easily be removed by very very minor changes to the posting.php file and the CSS file governing the thread display. As I recall (and I don't actively maintain the backside of phpBB forums anymore), the post title is an h3 element that is collapsible down to a 0px height.

The "total posts" in the user profile page seems to be incorrect. My total posts has dropped drastically since just before the new site was launched. It was almost 30,000 and is now showing a little over 18,000.

Also is that information and the country name/flag etc. now buried only in the user profile. It was interesting to see it in the forum reply headers previously.

Navigation is more cumbersome...similar to the Flyertalk revamping awhile back. And I rarely visit that site anymore as a result.
Am I missing something or is there no "jump to first" when re-visiting a forum?

I believe the forums are still indexing all of the data. When the new version first came up, I was sitting at around 200 posts, now I am back up to 490ish which takes me back to about 2011. I seem to remember in my head posting as far back as 2008 so it seems like the indexing is still on-going.

Can we please fix the photo links that exist already? The broken links make it very hard to read old threads when all of the pictures in context are missing.

The new site management will not make it more compact, give up you dreams. They do no give a kcuf neither to you nor to your aviation enthusiasm. The only thing they care about is more clicks to sell more avertisements. Therefore - no more compact layout, you will be clicking and reloading pages generating money to the soulless profiteers.
Thankfully, there are numerous ad block software that sweep this crap away.

P.S. Small hint on how to avoid irritating post header: Delete it manually each time from the "Subject:" field while typing your post.

1. You need a top banner for the front page like the previous website that had a distinctive identity.
2. If the design stays the same (very likely as we are powerless), can you please at least put back all the functionalities that the previous site had?
3. Please listen to your users, huge companies collapsed by being arrogant not listening, Nokia is one of those.

Any smart people out there may just build a website that is identical to your previous website (the valuable asset you are throwing away) and easily steal all your once long term loyal customers - what they are asking for clearly is to roll back to the previous website and make improvements starting from there.

Wake up and good luck.

It hurts my eyes to read it. Therefore, I will sue the website and those responsible. Also, this redesign will mark the death of NWArooster because there is is no longer the 'old' smiley. Also, many conversations may turn hostile without smilies such as 'stir the pot' which provides some light humor to put people at ease.

In Chrome (and some other browsers) you need to go to Setting -> Add-Ons (or Extensions) and look up for available extensions available for the particular browser. That's what I actually have done.

Also, you may just look up in any search system like google by key words "Ad Block".

Good luck!

Do'nt do any changes. Just bring the old site back entirely. The new one cannot compare at all. I feel 'blind' when trying to look into it. A lot of useful features are gone.

Someone can say where I find the info about my pic statistic (with graphics) and where is the page that shows the location of my pics in queue (so I know when the pics will be screened?)...?? I have read some reply of Airliners Crew Support to justify the new format (in the face of countless critics of the members who use the site).......but let me say.....the new site in addition to be not attractive and very confusing, it lost a lot of important informations for all members who use the site to upload their pics !!

It is not your age. I am not "old" and I am a professional stylist and designer and it is not your imagination...This new site design is hard to read, hard to navigate and poorly designed on a visual level. If this was my website and I paid someone to do this, they would be changing it today after reading all the scathing comments here. I do not think I have ever seen such a bad response from any website redesign. The response here is almost laughably bad and would be hilarious if I didn't genuinely love the old site. This redesign is getting worse reviews than the new "Ghostbusters" trailer.

After looking it over and attempting to navigate and find photos, it is clear to me that nobody did the proper research on color contrast, font shape and readability for the general population. Over 20% of Americans have some type of mild to severe vision impairment and this number goes up the older we get. I was born with some mild vision issues and I did not let this stop me from having talent and a love for design. I also have great sensitivity to anyone with a physical challenge and I keep this in mind when designing anything that the public must see or use. I wish web designers could do the same but it is often more about cost, or appealing to their artistic own taste, rather than making a pleasing site for everyone. Yet such websites expect people to come back and in some cases, to pay for memberships. If they expect this, then users expect a quality website. That is not too much to ask in this case.

So I 100% agree with you and you are not "old" or a "whiner" if you voice your opinion and say in a nice way, that you dislike something. A lot of us dislike the new site design and some of us here also happen to be artists and designers as a profession. Honestly, the new design is unprofessional looking and badly done. That is why everyone is complaining. This is also why websites have message boards. So if they do not like the majority hating the design, perhaps they should do a better job next time, or change it back to the old format. The old look was easy to read, easy to navigate, uncluttered, easy on the eyes and appropriate for an aviation website. This new site looks like some cheap, cookie cutter news site or blog. The old site looked well thought out. This new one doesn't.

I choose colors and style for a living. I might not do web design but I do home decor, commercial design, hair and makeup, so color and symmetry are things I tend to look at. I have been interested in aviation since I was a child but I certainly am no expert and would not know how to fly or fix an airplane. If I tried to fly a plane without proper instruction, I probably would crash it and lots of professionals would understand why. I would crash because I do not know how to fly planes. Home design, hair styling and web design are all hard jobs too, just as hard as flying a plane...The only difference is, nobody will crash or die if they have bad hair or a bad wall color.

This new site design, for me as an artist, is like seeing a plane crash and go down in flames. Pilots should not cut your hair, unless they have completed beauty school. Hairdressers should not fly planes unless they have had the proper pilot training. Whoever designed this site, I am guessing they are not a professional website designer. Thus, they made all these visually unappealing site changes because they lack proper schooling in this field. People should never design a website if they are not willing to do the proper research, get feedback from users and be willing to iron out any "bugs" if their design does not work. This is not easy...but it also is not rocket science. Nor is it rocket science for anyone with an artistic background, to look at this site for 60 seconds and explain exactly why it looks terrible. There is too much white, the fonts are too narrow and too small and the dark on white and blue is hard to see. Again, any art student or design student would be able to point out these glaring flaws and many others.

So it is not just you and it isn't your age. On a professional level it looks really armature, this is not your imagination....Most of the people posting here and also professionals like myself all are agreeing that this is poorly designed. Hopefully whoever made these changes will take our comments to heart and realize none of us are being mean. Most of us just loved the old site as-is and are unhappy with this new look. I could not agree more! I hope they change it back. On a positive note, perhaps they will get some much needed feedback regarding what people want on this site and what they do not want. This should be an easy fix. Simply make it look like the old site did! Not all designs work for every client. Sometimes when they are unhappy, this means taking feedback and making the right changes and not getting too hurt if things did not work out. Let's hope they get it right next time, though reading some of these comments, it seems like people are pretty angry about this.

Someone A.net Support can say why if I open (with large format) any of my pics in cue and I compare it with the original I have in my computer, its quality is inferior to the original? For example the sky appear much more grainy than the original....this is incredible!!! For me the software doesn't open completely the pic (I tried with a 1280px pic). Instead if I try to open the pic at full page the software enlarges too much photography and makes it soft....it seems that the sofware doesn't recognize the real size of my 1280px pic!! This problem didn't happen with the old site format!!!

Can anyone tell me how to see how many photos have been added since my last visit?
Where that link went, which brought up the small dialogue box for number and type of info / format displayed?
That's the whole reason I visit A.net daily, and I can't find it anywhere.
The only thing I can see so far is viewing ALL 2.7 million photos at once, 84 at a time, and yet the newest ones are three days old.

P.S., forums have had avatars for nearly as long as a.net has been around, so I get that, but making the default one the skull of a DEAD GUY is a bit ironic for an AVIATION website...... DUUUH!

It is not your age.

TL DR: This "new" design was made by some local college student for food at his spare time (when he don't serve meals at McDonalds).

So disappointed at the forum changes, hard to read and hard to navigate. And the homepage cropping the top photos looks awful.

Can't see me spending half as much time on here as I used too!

I welcome the changes to make the site more compatible with mobile devices, it's much easier to read the forums on my phone now. However, there has been a lot of comment about the new style being too white and hurtful for the eyes, and I agree to this. I think it's very "default" and it's hard to read grey text on a white background.

Just to compare, I made a 5 minutes redesign of the new site in the old colors, using Chrome's inspector. Here's the result...

I see a majority of people replaying to site change are forum browsers and forum users. I can see that photographers voice are thin and low priority.

Maybe lower in numbers but at the very least equal in voice. Trust me on that one.

How do I get to the option to change the 'skin'?

Yesterday I changed it from "Airliners" to "Flatboot" (or whatever it is called) and preferred it. Today when I logon, I'm back to "Airliners" and now I can't find the option.

Cheers.

Kas, simple question: where is core service for photographer? Page with photo at it's original size, unchanged, not up- or downscaled, not recompressed, with all information about airliner, with photographer name and with ability for providing link to it for outside use?

It's gone for me too.
Should've been in "board preferences " --> "Edit global settings".
