I miss the Airliners.net live chat, but I'm surprised there was no discussion of what could've replaced it. This discussion, if you ask me, is long overdue.
Would it be possible for us as a community to set up an unofficial replacement for the live chat -- one that we can collectively manage along with the mods? Maybe a Discord server or a Mattermost instance (an open-source version of Slack, and is free for everyone if we can install one on A.net servers) might do well for the community, giving us a meaningful real-time alternative to just forum posts.
While yes, the old chatroom suffered from lack of traffic, I still think a live chat has its uses. I wonder who else thinks the same?

I didn't want to post this in a general thread in non-aviation as most would have no idea who he was, but anyone who checks this thread would maybe like to know - frequent long time A.net chatter seven3seven (David) passed away unexpectedly a few weeks ago. I was fortunate enough to meet him several times, and we kept in regular contact despite the chat function being gone for many years.

It was a popular feature, as was the quiz. I believe there were plans to get to it after the site migration and things were stabilized, but.... *shoulder shrug*

Thanks for the candidness. I think it is safe to say the chat will not be returning. I am not surprised. Disappointed, but not surprised.

I feel like everyone deserves some candor at this point. We've spent the better part of three years apologizing for things that are outside of our control, simply because we didn't (and still don't) know how to respond. The whole crew from moderators to support to screeners want just as much out of this site as everyone, and then some. We wish we had the ability to make that happen, but it's a little bit like screaming into a megaphone in the wilderness at this point — nobody's listening.

Honestly, the best bet for re-implementing an Airliners.net live chat would be to start a channel on a third-party platform like Discord. It just doesn't make any sense for the developers to create a chat platform exclusively for this site when there are so many third-party platforms available.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

I was talking to a few of the original guys about a Discord. I am willing to start a server up on there and have an unofficial a.net chat for anyone here wanting to join.
