Actually, Chrome is currently flagging as not secure with red triangle, and there is no https redirect.

Interestingly simply entering www.airliners.net brings site up as not secure. Yes one can enter https:// but one should not have to.

Site should always properly redirect to secure https version, not let them utilize an unsecure connection.

Please fix this once and for all.

It says it all about the quality of the IT team that runs these sites that they can't get such a basic thing working even after months - it literally takes minutes to do this on any sane platform from the last two decades.

If they can't get this working, why should we have any faith in them to protect our personal data? This is just bad.

I don't understand what's going on and what's the cause of the problem. It's strange that I haven't seen any problems since the site implemented this security feature. I'm using Firefox and IE and every connection is secure. I agree with you that it takes too long to fix this.

While I can agree that the secure site should be reached by default, we do have a secure site that can be accessed. Updating your bookmarks manually will work. Going to the secure site in the URL will work (after which the secure site will be remembered for the next time you visit). So while not the perfect situation, there is a very easy and workable solution.

Assuming they have been working that. They may not have worked on that since SSL got added, in which case it says nothing about the quality of the IT team.

Unless already bookmarked, I doubt people actually type https when looking for a website.

Most probably simply type the www address which in the case of A.net brings you an unsecure connection.

Seems kinda crazy in 2019 with all the ongoing talk about internet safety and encryption.

They should be setting better priorities.

And if they don't set the priorities, they should be pushing back massively against those that do.

So yeah, I stand by my earlier comment and reject your attempt to sweep this under the carpet as a non-issue - there should be no way to access this site via HTTP in 2019 and yet here we are, excuses still being made.

Pathetic.

Unless these "other things" are glaring security holes that haven't been disclosed, then what exactly takes priority over the security of this sites users data?

I don't know, since I don't have a clue what's actually on the top of their list to fix. The main point I was trying to make is that a SSL version of the site is available for everyone, with an explanation how to get that done. I'm not trying to disprove any of what you and the other users above have been saying, just trying to provide a different explanation for balance. But since I don't know much more, this is where this thread stops for me.

Seems like this site is run by an absentee landlord that might or might not get around to the most basic repairs.

While I do appreciate all the time and effort the volunteers put in, its disheartening when they themselves don't have a clue or have a voice over some very basic functionality of the site that requires attention.

Hello all,

If you get the SSL error please grab me a screenshot and post it here along with the action you were doing at the time and device and software details.

Also, let us know if you are using on add ons or pop up blockers since as of right now we are unable to reproduce this issue and all links should redirect to the SSL secure site.

IT folks just need to redirect all non-secure e.g. "https://www.airliners.net" requests to the https version.
If you are seeing "non secure" in Safari or elsewhere, just add "https" before the site address.
This is an easy fix. Unless of course the insecure version is kept on for some nefarious reason.

Hi LAXIntl

No matter what I try I cannot replicate the issue and the site is secure for me no matter which browser or operating system I have tried and I've tried them all. The only problem I did have was on Firefox where I had not updated a bookmark to HTTPS. I'll ask Jeff to have the developers take a look into it but he too is always getting secure site access.

Thanks

I've had the same issue as LAXIntl for quite a while. Initially I was always rerouted to secure, but it's been unsecure for several months now, and I can't even force it to the secure site.

Here is my experience.

Whenever I type www.airliners.com on any device it defaults to non-secure connection. I can manually enter https:// however shortly after navigating across the site it again becomes non-secure.

It seems something is not correct with the site's migration from http to https and it does not auto-redirect to secure connection. It should not even be possible to access http version when entered on address bar.

I concur with atcsundevil, LAXIntl, janders, and mercure1.

Site constantly displays as not secure. I just even tried entering https://www.airliners.net in the browser (Chrome) and received the below error.

Your connection is not private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from airliners.net (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards). Learn more

Like mentioned above, site is indeed being displayed as Not Secure.

In my case (currently) I can enter https in the address bar to bring up secure site, but must do so manually. Simply entering airliners.net or www.airliners.net brings up non-secure site by default.
Also I dont know how long site will stay secure, as based on previous experience it will revert back to non-secure between pages.

Clearly, there is something a miss. As per previously submitted screenshots, the issue happens across multiple devices and browsers.

There should be no means for users to access non-secure connection, instead site should always revert user to SSL secure connection.

Same here, unsecure on Chrome and Safari - Shouldn't this be something quiet easy to fix ? It's been one month with such situation and no reaction from programmers on something that basic and important ? Does someone care ?

I didn't mean the crew doesn't care but as it's been said, security should absolutely be priority number 1 in 2019 and it really asks a lot of questions about how serious the programmers team have been about Anet.

Anet deserves better than that !

Unfortunately the issue is older than a month...
I have requested that http should be turned off, however it screws up other sites in VS portfolio. Not sure how that works in Vs environment, I only have experience in IIS where it is a two second fix to alter the site bindigs to only accept traffic on 443 and not 80.

You don't want to turn off port 80. There are 20 years of links from around the web pointing to https://www.airliners.net. What you want is to silently redirect from http on port 80 to https on port 443, which is at minimum a little bit harder. The site admins have decided that it may not be worthwhile, since in reality the only thing that actually needs to be protected is your login password, people who don't have accounts and are just browsing the photos can do so over plaintext http just fine.
