"Like" button for comments in the forums?

Wed May 08, 2019 5:19 pm

I think that this has been proposed before, but I didn't find any recent threads on the topic.

Sometimes I think that it would be very helpful to have a facebook-style "Like" button that I can click to show my agreement and/or support of certain forum comments.

For example, we often have threads that begin with a question, and several forum members will respond with various opinions on the subject. I will recognize one of the answers as clearly being the best, and I really want to emphasize to the OP that this is the best answer to the question. It would be so helpful to just have a "like" button to upvote the comment.

Currently, the only option is to respond to the thread, perhaps quote the best answer, and add a frivolous comment saying that I concur with that position. But this process can often result in threads getting way too long and bloated, with minimal recognition given to the posters who give thoughtful, correct information. It just seems like a voting mechanism would help to simplify some threads and perhaps provide positive feedback to well-considered responses. Like Facebook, I think that there should visibility to see exactly who "liked" any post -- no anonymous votes allowed.

I worry about the consequences of a "thumbs-down" button. There is already a lot of negativity expressed in the forums, and I don't know if a down-vote option would be constructive. I don't want to get to the point where people read a thread and click up or down on every comment, but I do want to be able to give recognition to good comments where recognition is due. But I might still consider as long as there is visibility as to who disliked something, so that there is no opportunity for anonymous trolling.

I think it would be a good addition - as you note, there are times I would like to acknowledge a post, or show my agreement, but without quoting it and making another comment, you can't, and that adds another post of little value to the thread. Of course, given the state of the site, and how difficult and time consuming it is to get any of the broken stuff fixed, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting on the developers to add any new features.
