Citing Sources

Sun Feb 27, 2022 9:35 pm

What are the guidelines for citing sources? I keep getting warned for not doing it. If something is obscure, I'll source it but other stuff seems to be common knowledge (at least to me) and if it's part of the topic matter of the thread, you'd think that anyone participating in it would already know it. It is especially aggravating when there is another moderator engaged in the thread and they don't say anything but another moderator comes in and warns you about it.

Just include a link to wherever you got what you're posting. If the words or images aren't yours, then paste a link. If the image is yours, then just say it is. It's in the rules, section 2. viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1446319

So if I say that Netherlands is getting 40 F35s, I have to post a link every time? Something like that is common knowledge in any thread discussing F35s.

If you're posting it as news, then yes. If you're just stating it when it's well known, then no, probably not. It just depends on how the moderator interprets it, so it's hard to speak to specific situations.

Not sure i'm following this line of thinking. So a few weeks ago I posted a picture of a celebrity in the celebrity crushes thread. It was pulled due to not having a link associated with it. So you're saying I needed to add a link to a picture? As if people needed a link to go to the picture that they can readily see in front of them? Just checking.

Yes, but we require it because often when images are posted, the image itself doesn't necessarily reveal the source. There's a very specific reason this is important to us, and that's because the other half of this site is an image database made up of user photos. We can't expect other websites or forums to respect the copyrights on our database if we don't set those standards for ourselves. It may seem like a cumbersome formality, but it's just something that we ask people to do so that we can hold people on other websites to a standard we expect.
