Herb Kelleher was/is/always will be #1 with me! Mr. Kelleher has been the guiding force behind an airline success story that is in a class by itself. He has proven to be a man who has walked the walk of integrity, sound ethical principles, and caring about others more than himself throughout his association of 30+ years with Southwest. In fact, as I've studied and observed the workings of Mr. Kelleher and Southwest Airlines, I have coined a phrase to sum up what I've found: "Herb is right!" Or, when I see him doing one of his impersonations or involved in an arm-wrestling match to settle a legal dispute: "That crazy old Herb is right!"
From the regulated era, C.E. Woolman of Delta is my favorite, most respected CEO. Under his leadership, Delta grew from a regional airline serving the Southeastern U.S. to a major, transcontinental trunk carrier that became renowned for superior service on the ground and in the air while consistently earning profits. Not coincidentally, Delta was also regarded in Mr. Woolman's time and for years after his tenure as the best U.S. airline to work for.

Yes, Kelleher certainly deserves an honorable mention for not changing anything when he inherited a successful carrier.
But I'd go back a little further and say the all time greatest was M. Lamar Muse.
Other greats would have to include Bob Six, C.R. Smith, and Don Nyrop.

My all time favorite CEO is Mr. C.E. Woolman, co-founder of Huff-Daland Dusters, and the visionary leader behind the metamorphosis from Huff-Daland to Delta Air Servce. It's amazing, when you really think about it, that 74 years later, Delta Air Lines is one of the world's largest airlines, and the leading US carrier (#2 overall I believe) in the huge transatlantic market, as well as a strong player in several other international markets.

Personally, I would like to know what criteria people have used to determine a "good" CEO. Have any of you been a CEO, or executive of any sort?
I see a lot of Gordon Bethune in this thread. He's a great guy, and he's doing a good job, but it's a lot easier to build a good airline from a clean slate where the airline went bankrupt (twice?) and the employees hated the previous management. It's a lot harder to stay on top.

My favorite CEO is Richard Branson of Virgin Atlantic. I love what he has done with Virgin ever since they started back in the year I was born, 1984. I also like Leo Van Wijk of KLM.
