In a recent post some people said there could be a merger with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. I don't think there will ever be a merger with American Airlines and Alaska Airlines I think they are just teaming up to take on United Airlines and Southwest Airlines on the west coast routes espically after the merger with American Airlines and Reno Air is done. American Airlines and Alaska Airlines will code-share on alot of routes espcally from Seattle to Los Angeles and American Airlines will have a strong alliance with Horizon Air also.
American Airlines flies to Seattle from New York, Boston, Chicago, Miami and Dallas and after the merger is done American Airlines will start flying to Anchorage, San Jose, Reno and Orange County from Seattle and they also fly to Tokyo. American Airlines is going to be a big airline in Seattle after the merger is done and it teamed up with Seattle based Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. Also Alaska Airlines is planning a new LAX hub too and American Airlines is expaning there too. (Read FedEx's Post). United Airlines with Shuttle By United Airlines and Southwest Airlines is going to have alot of competion soon espically from Seattle and Los Angeles. Also Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air and American Airlines all share the same terminal at Seattle (Concorse C) so passengers connecting to both airlines have really easy connections.

Really easy connections? Try going from AA's gates all the way down to where the majority of AS' gates are in the D concourse...I assure you...that is not easy!

United777, I disagree with you. There are many advantages to be had with an AS/AA merger. It is not only plausable, but likely. There is very little route overlap, high fleet commonality, and Oneworld needs to expand in the NW. Please give me a reason why not.

How is there good fleet comonality?? The majority of AS' planes are 737-400's...AA sure doesn't operate any of them...nor will AA operate AS' new 737-700's that they have on order!

737-400s Alaska's major type? Where have you been living? Accoridng to Alaska they have more MD-80s than 737s. At the end of 1997 they had 42 MD-80s and 28 737-400s. Now, I don't know about you, but Alaska hasn't gotten 14 or more 737s in the last year and a half. Alaska DOES have 737-700s and -900s on order.
Connecting from American to Alaska IS NOT EASY, nor is connecting from American to Horizon much easier. They are all on the same concours, although Alaska is more on the D concourse than C concourse and American and Horizon are on opposite ends.
As for an alliance between Horizon and American, NO, for two BIG reasons. 1, Horizon rather likes its independence. ALthough it is a partner with Alaska, it is its own Airline with its own identity. 2, Horizon is practically the ONLY commuter to the Pacific Northwest from Seattle. Horizon is already a partner with Northwest, although it is not an Airlink carrier. Horizon used to be an United Express carrier but gave it up when United wanted them to paint their planes in UA colors and "conform" to their identity. Horizon doesn't want to trade in its freedom for limited passenger links to other airlines and possible competition that would come from being United Express or Northwest Airlink or American Eagle.
For Alaska, a mergre wouldn't be good and I hope to always see that smiling Eskimo and the rising sun of Horizon, GO AS and QX!!!!!!

AS is gradually replacing all MD80s with 737s. UAL777, there is an extremely high level of commonality between all NG737 orders. Most orders can be converted between models as well. The classic 737-400s do have commonality with the NG737s, thus ensuring a relatively similar fleet. The AS MD80s would of course fit it just fine at AA. Within the next few years, however AS plans to become an all 737 operator.

And, seeing as how AA does not operate the 737-400 (AS has 27...), nor does it plan to operate the 737-700, and how AA is phasing out their MD-80's (slowly but true), the fleet does not have as much commonality as you'd wish it did for your 'merger' to work.

I don't see Alaska merging with American. The RenoAir buy gives American a good presence in the west. If they really wanted Alaska they might have bought it instead of Reno Air.
