I think this is true, it does depend on the plane.
I've remember reading stuff on the Blend Wing Body concepts by Boeing and Aerospatile that the reason for rear engine placement was to keep the noise down. In addition, there's less drag if the wing hits the air first instead of both.
Though it doesn't work with Concorde.
I figure any high-by-pass ratio engine should take the trophy.
