Cathay pacific took it. Any idea why Cathay took it as it has been used for tests by Boeing and must not be in a really good shape as others.

CX took it cos they were desperate for some 777s and didnt want to wait. I think they needed to boost capacity for some routes. Boeing refitted and modified the entire aircraft to take the RR Engines instead of the PW ones.

Dont know if they got any discount though

The first 777 was delivered to United, which was the launch customer for the plane. UA sent it back to
Boeing and Cathay picked it up last year.

No, the FIRST 777 (N7771) stayed with Boeing until they sold it to Cathay. United were the launch customer and received the first PRODUCTION 777.

United hasnt given back or sold any 777s.

Per Bill Harms' website...the very first 777 is now with Cathay Pacific as a -267, with RR Trent 884s. It was delivered to CX on December 6th, 2000 as B-HNL. Regards.

I just flew 4 days ago on a CX777 from HKG to DXB and the captain told me the aircraft was around 5 years old. I didn't get the reg. number, but is it possible I was on the first ever built 777? I really wish I had checked the registration!

United Airlines (UAL) was the launch customer. The first commercial 777 flight was UA918 from IAD to LHR.

msn 26916/ln 7. del to UA 5.15.95 and operated UA flt 921 6.7.95 IAD-LHR. The earlier build aircraft were in the flight test program.

To say the #1 Boeing 777 used as a test aircraft was "not in really good shape" is incorrect. 777 #1 had virtually no time on the airframe and was an astute purchase by CX of a pampered low time aircraft. The aircraft was modified to take the RR Trents at the factory, as well as to configure the interior to CX specifications. If my understanding of your comment is incorrect, I apologize.

N7771 was called "Working Together", and that wasn't United's first aircraft. It's not B-HML with Cathay.

Did the 777 you flew on have 2-5-2 or 3-3-3 seating in economy? If it is 3-3-3, then it is B-HNL, as it is currently the only CX 777-200 with that seating configuration.
