ANA Airbus 340's?
I heard a rumor that ANA (All Nippon Airways) is planning to purchase Airbus A340-8000's for use on international routes from Japan including to North America. Can anyone give any details or squash the notion all together. ANA has however, confirmed intent to purchase Boeing 777-200ER's for long-range international routes.tkswidebodyphotog

As of late 1998, they had 5 A340-300s on order. Haven't heard anything about this since then.

As Boeing has confirmed that ANA will acquire at least four 777-200ERs, any small fleet(5 a/c) would be uneconomical and unlikely. I believe that ANA will or already has cancelled that order. Once again, Boeing's Big Baby is triumphant!

Just to correct something here.
ANA's A340s have been deferred, -Not- cancelled, my source is Mark Schaeffer's Aircraft orers website at:

Take a gander over there.
I would believe the deferment was due to the spate of economic problems this region had been going thru ("The Asian Crisis" as well as Japan's difficult economic problems of it's own for a some time now) for a while and not indicative of preference or whatever.
All the regions airlines have gone thru a -very- difficult period, now emerging slowly from it. Deferments, postponements, parking planes in the desert or wherever are now being renegotiated. Recovery is underway.

A340-8000 (what is now called the A340-200) is the longest range flying aircraft. If ANA needs less capacity than the 777 and a little more range, the aircraft would make sense (pilots flying the 320s can also fly it...) Nevertheless they would become the first commercial airline to fly the type!

MAC_Veteran, you are right, the A340s have initiallt been deferred. They were originally supposed to be in the fleet noe, but delivery was slipped to 2003. The 777-200(ER) is an a/c which fits the same niche. It would not make sense to add another type, with new engines, to fill the same role that you already have aircraft for. I absoloutly think the order with be cancelled. Who knows, maybe Boeing will buty these A340s, and just burn thm out in the desert.(LOL)

Isnt there one of these at Toulouse? outfitted in a VIP interior, originally ordered for a brother of the Sultan of Brunei, but he objected to it as it being so expensive with the stuff his brother ordered for it (LOL!!!!)
The A340-200 maybe could be dubbed the "A340-SP" in terms of special performance and range capabilities on routes not requiring a -300 or larger.
I really enjoy the A340 though as a passenger. It's a marvel to fly on and is extrememly comfortable. The quietness of it really appeals to me. I've never been aboard a plane as quiet as the A340.
The A330 with RR engines fitted to them is an interesting experience. Flying on DragonAir's KA437 (KHH-HKG) and KA434 (HKG-KHH). On departure, this thing -leaped- up to 37000 feet in -no time-. I was amazed.
Cabin load was modest on the outbound, on the return to KHH, it was heavier (last flight of the day) and still...Incredible performance. The only drawback is the cabin is a bit noisier behind the wing on it, versus the A340. Immediately behind the wing and forward it isnt bad at all.

Flyaa757, you can go and look to the Airbus site and you will realize that the -8000 has the "old" -200s body (same dimensions) but can fly 8000 miles and not 7200 (like the -200)when it was first built. It was called the -8000 when the original -200 was still in production. Now we have the -300 which can fly 7500 and seat approx. 270 and the -200 which can fly 8000 and sit approx 240. I recently read on flightinternational that the sole -8000 built was ordered by an Arab Prince which never took delivery of it and sitting in Germany. But you might be right on the Air Canada order...Good for Airbus!

Tell ya what, I dont know if you've ever flown on one, but one to start with is the Singapore Airlines A340-300. They are fitted with the KrisWorld entertainment system..You'd be singing the praises of the airline and aircraft.

The A340-300 / Mac_Vet
The only A340 flight that I took was on Turkish Airlines (eventhough I love the aircraft, I am a frequent BA, DL and LH traveler--(I always travel LH on 747 routes!) As you say the aircraft is ultra-quiet and the plane reached a cruising altitude very swiftly....On business class they removed the center overhead bins which made the cabin looked as airy as a 777....
