Each Airliner's Shortest Current Route

Thu Sep 27, 2001 1:42 pm

In keeping with a thread that's currently making the rounds, I'll ask the opposite question: what's the shortest route that a jet airliner is now flying:

727
737
747
A319/320/321
A330
A340
DC-9
DC-10
MD-11
MD-80

Tom in NO (at MSY)

PS: Please, no 4-mile Islander or Cessna flights.
PPS: Years ago, I flew a CO 727 roundtrip MIA-FLL (about 18 miles)

Air Canada fly's the YVR-YCD route something like 6 times daily with dash 8's and the distance is about 25nm.

I am not sure if these are the absolute shortest, but here are some I know of.

CAK-PIT (79 miles) US Airways F-100
MKE-MSN (73 miles) Midwest Express MD-80
TOL-DTW (49 miles) Northwest Airlines (Mesaba) CRJ

That's just a few.

I flew on a 727 from SFO to MRY (Monterey), 77 miles. (The flying time was about doubled because of a missed approach due to ground equipment still on the runway.) Several years back, due to some frequent flyer mileage promotion, many people bought tickets for SFO-OAK, 11 miles. I don't know what aircraft were used, but they were jetliners.

Eventhough 777 wasn't mentioned in the topic, I have to post my reply...

Malaysia Airlines flight from KUL to ZAG has a stopover in VIE, which means that you can fly ZAG-VIE with 777. Something like 25-30 minutes... weird.

I flew with LanCHile from Calama to Antofagasta.
I don't know the exact distance, but very short flt (20 min) It was a 732.
Today, it is probably a A320.
Last year I flew ZRH-BSL with crossair MD82.

BA extend its Kingston service to Montego Bay which is 70 miles (as the crow flies) and takes about 15 minutes in a 777. Quite short for a big plane...

I once flew LAX-SAN on a United A320. I don't know the distance, but it was an 18 minute flight.

SFO-OAK was flown by UA B727's sometime ago.

There were B717-200 flights between SYD-CBR (<150nm)

This probably isn't the shortest but I was on a USAirways BWI-PHL on a 734. I think they also accasionally use a 752. The flight had about 10 people on it.

I'm pretty sure you used to be able to fly a Royal Air Moroc 747 from JFK-Montreal. it's 376 miles, not really that short, but kind of an exotic way to get there.

About a year ago UA had a PHL-IAD on a 757 that lasted 3 months. It was one of the most ridiculous things I've seen an airline do. Distance is 173 miles.

TLV-ETH route, 30 min.
LY operates with 757/737
Arkia 752/753 and Israir with 752.

Also, Arkia operates a service between KSW (Kiriat Shmona) & RPN (Rosh Pina) twice a day with ATR72 or DHC-7, it takes 7 min. (I did it once when I flew from TLV to KSW with a stop at RPN, Its cool!)

United flies a 757 on Miami-Orlando on Saturdays during the high seasons. All 19 of Delta's 20 daily flights between Miami (incl. FLL) and Atlanta are flown with 767s. Bahamair flies 737s between Miami and Nassau (like 25 minute flight). The shortest 777 flights is very likely United's daily Miami-Havana flight, which will soon go double daily. And UA has no problem filling up that plane. Air Canada has flown A340s on Miami-Toronto frequently in the past, but this year's schedule does not show it. Delta has a daily JFK-Atlanta flight on an MD-11.

The shortest flight for a B747 is BON-CUR (KL789) which is 24nm, for MD-11 probably Guayaquil-Quito (KL753) which is 140nm.

Air Canada sometimes has 343's and i think even occasionally a 744 doing YUL-YYZ, but I think these are what we call "positioning flights" or something... not really sure how that works. However, I think they have regular scheduled service on this route with 333's, as well, which is quite large for that route.

Continental has a 733 twice weekly on MIA-HAV, which takes little more than one hour.

Areopagus wrote of flying a 727 from SFO to MRY, 77 miles; from 1997-99 I flew that route a dozen times, they had a 757 go from SFO to MRY in the late morning and return in the afternoon, and a 319 or 320 late at night, returning to SFO early the next morning. Usually flew at 10,000, took about 15 minutes in the air. The other SFO-MRY runs were handled by United Express, which now does all of them.
I also recall the SFO-OAK flights, which were popular in a post-strike promotion, I believe in the 1980s. Any paid flight was rewarded with a coupon good for any other domestic flight. At the time, this unpublicized route was the shortest and cheapest, so folks lined up just to get the coupons. I flew it once en route to ORD, in the 1970s, the OAK stop was just to add passengers; at the time you could not buy a SFO-OAK ticket.

Cayman Airways flies it's 737s MCO to TPA (a distance of about 60 miles or less as the crow flies)

Like BCal DC10 said MCO-KIN is done by the BA Triple 7 as well as many times daily by most of the Air Jamaica Jets... A320s, A310 and the A340.

What's shorter, ATL-MCO-ATL or MIA-HAV-MIA? Those are the only two short 772 routes I can think of. Lauda used to fly VIE-MUC with a 772 (continuing on to MIA), but now it is a 763.

I think UA used to use DC10's every once in a while between DEN-COS about 100 miles.
