Does Anyone Else Like Amphibian A/c?

Mon Oct 15, 2001 10:07 am

Is anyone here old enough to have been on or had parents on a/c such as the Pan Am Clippers of old?

I like the aspect of seeing planes takeoff from the waterand floating skyward.

You know, like the Spruce Goose or the Beriev A-40 Mermaid below?

Absolutely love all of the Shorts Sunderland flying boats, as well as the Boeing Clippers (whatever happened to those. It seems almost idiotic that not a single one was ever preserved!)

The Beriev Mermaid is an awesome design. Are there any photos of the Spruce Goose in the database?

I myself love the looks of amphibian aircraft. They have an added element of grace over others. Not to mention they bring back memories of those grand ol'days of flying boats and air travel really taking hold of people!

Growing up, my father and I used to take his Lake Amphibian for weekend trips to the lakes of Maine. We would land in the water, get our fishing poles out, and fish while sitting on the wings of the plane.

Good memories!
