A 767 Damn Near Knocked Me Off My Roof...

Mon Nov 19, 2001 6:24 am

Last night i climbed up on my roof to listen to atc, i listened to the normal daily klm flight getting his atc clearance when this alitalia guy comes on the horn telling the controller he was turning on final. so the controller tells the klm guy to turn right on course instead of left due to inbound traffic. ok no big deal. i wait 5 mins and don't hear nothing and all of a sudden i hear the rising pitch of whining jet engines. i look up, only to see a big ass airplane climbing toward me at low altitude. the other people living around would probably say it was disturbing them, but it was one of the coolest things i ever saw in aviation. sure we have the 747 and the concorde, but that 767-306ER was huge! When it flew over me I almost slipped and fell off the roof. I mean the whole damned thing shook!!!

Damn those 767s look like 777 when I look at them..... heck it shook me once !!!  Smile

N39356 Landing on 35-C like it was heading north to DFW... that where I was @ home .... that plane came from somewhere while I was at front washing my car, and heck i hear an engine roaring in the distant where I was standing and looking in all directions..., I live about a 20 minutes drive south of DFW, in Arlington near Mansfield.

It was American... have no idea where AA use 767 from/to DFW. any idea....?

How can you listen to the ATC? Do you just use a police scanner?

HooverAir,

how would I know if an airline is on a 767 when calling in for T/O-APPR clearance when listening to a scanner.... ?

I can use Real Player in order to listen to ATC live anywhere !!

I live 20 mins from Gothenburg airport and sometimes i don't really now what they guys behind the yokes are up to. It doesn't happen very often but sometimes they fly really low past here, like one late night when i was watching some tv i just heard a huge roar, louder than i ever heard before, i ran to the closest window as fast as i could but it was dark outside so obviously i couldn't see a s**t. As you said covert, "normal" people probably find this kind of stuff disturbing but i love it.  Smile

Hooverair,

If you want to listen to ATC you will need a scanner, but I'm not very familiar with this.
There are few websites on the web to listen to live ATC.
Make a search and you'll see.

Here's a link:

Hope this helps

How high was the B767 above you? Everynight in Changi we experience about 5 B744s bound for Europe and when you stand under the path, they fly over you, they are just about 500 feet. That nearly swept me off too. They used to be lower, like 300 feet but the load now aren't that good because of 9/11, if not, the B747 would be heavier.

That was great.

AA has 767 flights to MIA, HNL, and several Latin American and South American cities from DFW.

In Canada, a good place for a scanner is Radio Shack believe it or not. You need a VHF/UHF scanner. The model I have is called Pro 29. It's actually made by Radio Shack which is another surprise. It's pretty sweet.

Here, we have a McChord C-17 globemaster III that does touch and goes maybe once a week durring the summer. It ends up flying over my house at like 1000 ft. AGL. That Mo.Fo. is loud. In case you didn't know, it's got 4 777 engines on it. Nice.

to answer your question, i have some very old radio that happens to catch vhf 108-137 mhz. i listen to aviation frequencies on this. on a clear night on my roof i can get aircraft 200 miles away talking on center. like our friend said, you can buy a nice radio shack scanner...

on atc tha klm pilot reported his altitude as fl40 which would work out to maybe 1000-odd feet agl taking in account a qnh that night of 1015 and the area terrain...

everybody else, what experiences have you had? have fun and keep tha forum alive...

qnh is the air pressure expressed in millibars. standard is 1013 at sea level.

Hell, Just today a Delta Air Lines 757-200 nearly landed on my car. I was just north of Runway 18 at Orlando Int'l Airport (MCO) and I stopped my car to watch it land and the damn thing shook the ground & I could feel the "Air Waves" coming off it. It was awesome...I need to go to SXM!!!!!

thats cool.
i remember when i was younger my pops used to take me to dca in viginia whenever we were in the washington area. we used to stand in some park(forgot its name) across the potomac from dc, where airplanes into dca would fly over on approach at 150 feet. one time some delta 727 started wobbling left and right when it got over us--i guess he lost his alignment. my pops was scared crapless when the left wing dipped over us!!

And I thought I was the only one who stood on a rooftop, listened to the atc, and watched 'em zoom by. Looks like I have company.
