Music Stars Died In Plane Crashes?

Wed Nov 28, 2001 8:08 am

Kinda sad topic, I know....after the Crossair Crash newly, as I heard Melanie Thornton was among the victims, I tried to recap how many (and some of them really good) music stars died in plane crashes. Well, beside my passion for aviation, I enjoy also music and some of these losses are pretty sad for me, maybe some of thou feel the same. Well, here's a brief list, would be nice to see if I missed somebody or if someone could comment/make an addition:

Patsy Cline(a fine singer, I must admit)

Buddy Holly

Ronnie Van Zant(and some more from Lynyrd Skynyrd)

Paul Kosoff(ex-"Free"-singer, not really lost in an accident, but died inflight. Possible causes - drug abuse or thrombosis)

Aalyiah(not a star, rather a media-created starlet)

Melanie Thornton(yes, I enjoyed her music earlier)

Some more names in the list or your opinion?

Richie Valens, Big Bopper, Ricky Nelson, Jim Reeves, Jim Croce, Stevie Ray Vaughn. Seems all the young ones die in plane crashes. Regards.

Glenn Miller. The plane carrying him to France was thought to have been destroyed over the English Channel by bombs being jettisoned by returning RAF bombers during WW2.

Jim Reeves' plane went down in 1964. I believe weather was a factor, but I'm not 100% sure of this. Let me mention the great Glenn Miller was lost in 1944 over the English Channel. And Reba McIntyre lost her entire band some years back in a corporate jet. Music had taken a big hit on all these plane accidents. Regards.

Glenn Miller

Glenn Miller died when the plane he was flying in disappeared over the English Channel in 1944. It was never known exactly why his plane disappeared until 1985. At that time, a group of former RAF pilots admitted that when they were unable to drop their bombs on Germany during a routine bombing run (due to poor visibility), they dropped the bombs over the English Channel--unfortunately, Glenn Miller's plane was flying below the bombers when they unloaded their bombs.

Stan Rogers, Canada's greatest folk singer (in my opinion), and a HUGE hero to me, died in C-FTLU (DC-9) at CVG in Air Canada's last fatal incident, June, 1983, along with 20 others, i believe. He was only 33 and, trust me, had a very long and celebrated career ahead of him. Cause was never established, but somehow a fire started in the rear of the cabin. The plane was landed safely, but upon the opening of the doors, the flames rose up...

Re: The Glenn Miller Crash...

An RAF tail gunner stated a few years ago he saw the bombs that they had just jettisoned knock the tail off a Norsemad over the channel that was flying at a lower altitude. Glenn Millers Norseman was reported as the only one that was missing that day.

HlywdCatft,

Re: Randy Rhoad's death; I still remember where I was & what I was doing when I heard the news about the crash (back in junior high, I was a huge Ozzy fan). According to the newspaper clip, which I still have, he was not at the controls, nor did he own the plane. Other band members had gone up for rides with the pilot earlier that day. Apparently, while Mr. Rhoads was aboard they decided to buzz the trailer where Ozzy was sleeping. They clipped a wing on some object & well....you know the rest. As far as famous people dying in plane crashes, he & Stevie Ray Vaughn were the worst for me.

Aaliyah's plane was overloaded and the pilot had traces of cocaine in his system, and had previously been implicated in a coke smuggling operation.
Lyle Lovett lost a band member in the ValuJet crash in Florida.

Holly Johnson from Frankie Goes To Hollywood was booked on PA103 which blew up over Lockerbie. Luckily he changed his plans at the last minute.

Considering the fact that musicians fly every single day when they're working, it's astonishing we haven't lost any big names in a commercial aviation disaster. All the above were killed in charter operations, and the very few that were in scheduled airliners that went down were sidemen or very obscure artists.

On the LX flight on which Melanie Thornton died was also the Dutch-German girl group called "Passion Fruit" (tennie-band); two of its three members died in the crash as well
