Frontier Pursuing To Get A 3/4 Slot At DCA.

Thu Nov 29, 2001 8:18 am

I read in my local newspaper 2 days ago that right now Frontier Airlines is trying to get a 3rd and 4th slot at DCA to start a 2nd daily non-stop flight between DEN and DCA.

Anyone think this will really happen?

Regards.

Frontier originally requested 4 slots at DCA, but were awarded two (one landing, one take off). Since then they have been after those additional two slots. Twice a day service makes better financial sense (overheads) than once a day.

Will they get them? Probably - eventually. They have proved they run a viable service, and there are a couple of "beyond perimeter" slots that could become vacant.

But right now, I don't think any new slots are being authorized - the concentration is on getting DCA back to "normal".

possible, they could argue that one-flight a day doesn't appeal to business traveller's needs. DCA is still not up to full capacity (and maybe never will be), perhaps operations will be limited to hub cities with med-sized jets.

With the demise of Midway, and a paring back at US, there is room for growth at DCA. The Justice Department seems to favor the smaller carriers.

Mineta has larger things to tackle in the immediate future, so I think that DOT and DOJ will back burner this request for at least a few months.

Anyone think there is a chance NW might reapply for DCA-SEA slots or just be satisfied with partner AS running the route?

that's probably *why* NW applied for the slots for SEA-DCA, as they have more weight and pull than AS thought they did....
