Australia's Airlines

Sat Dec 01, 2001 10:05 am

Hello,

This is an incredibly dumb question, and I apologize in advance, but I need to know:

How many airlines DOES Australia have?

I know of QANTAS and Virgin Blue, isn't Ansett bankrupt though?

What other ones are there?

Ansett is in receivership, but they currently operate a limited schedule, with budget style service. But a buyer is close to being finalised and then what happens is anyone's guess.

Apart from the airlines that you mentioned, there is also Hazelton.

It's hard to say, because of the Ansett situation. There are a couple of AN subsidiaries or associates, like Kendell Airlines and Hazelton, but, last time I checked, they were a bit disorganized, too. There are some smaller, outback airlines (regionals) but they tend to come and go like flies - I don't know if Air North, for example, is still flying.

Effectively, you have the 400 pound gorilla, Qantas, and the upstart Virgin Blue. Ansett has been saved by the bell (flying again), but until the dust clears and everyone has sorted themselves out, it's all a bit "up in the air" (sorry!).

Cheers

So then it's just Virgin, QANTAS, and Ansett for now that are the major players.

Does QANTAS own any regional carriers?

Reason I ask is that I might be moving to oz, and well, one of these airlines might be a future job for me.

There are several airlines under the QantasLink banner, they include Eastern, Southern, Sunstate and of course Impulse. A lot of the QantasLink flying is done by National Jet who do most of the Bae 146 flights.
Qantas also have a 50 % share in Australian Air Express (AAE) who operate the overnight freight flights in conjuction with Australia Post.
Other airlines include Ansett, Virgin Blue, Hazelton, Kendall, SkyWest and Aeropelican.

Hey Aloha,
Well i am sorry to say, but my sources tell me that to find a job in Aussie at the mo, in the aviation industry, is very very hard!
Before this it was hard aswell, due to so many people wanting it! For Example Flight Attendants, usually 10,000 people turn up to an open day! That is a hell of a lot of compitition!!

Cheers
