Aeroflot SVO-HAV... Profitable?

Mon Dec 03, 2001 1:44 am

Aeroflot flies from Moscow to Havana with IL-96Ms. I was just wondering if this route is profitable at all. I mean Russia isn't communistic anymore.. so what is the point of the route? And I doubt many Russians could afford to fly to Cuba for vacation (at least not to fill an IL-96) when they can fly for a lot cheaper to Turkey, Spain, and all the other traditional resorts in Europe.

Anyone know why Aeroflot is keeping this route around? By the way it currently operates

SVO-SNN-HAV
HAV-SVO

it used to comtinue to LIM from HAV but that was cancelled. Peru was also close to communism by the way...

The flight is SVO-SNN-HAV-MEX. I'm not sure, but I think they have 5th Freedom on SNN-HAV (the flight used to be SVO-SNN-MIA-MEX with 5th freedom on SNN-MIA) and HAV-MEX. There is enough demand to fly this flight. Russia is not a rich nation, but there are plenty of enough wealthy people who can afford a trip to Cuba.

It doesn't have much (or anything) to do with communism - it's about economics. For historical reasons, Russia is still the island's largest trading partner, and, because of the embargo, Cuba can't trade with the US. The Europeans are moving in, but there's still a long way to go because of an implied threat by the US to put sanctions on foreign companies doing business with Cuba.

As for tourists, the ruble will buy the Russians a lot more vacation in Cuba than it will in any European country.

Cheers

There are a lot of Irish holidaying in Cuba at the moment and the Shannon route is a great way to get there. A work mate of mine is just back I am waiting for a trip report.
