Frontier Announces New Service to New Orleans, Fort Lauderdale and Sacramento

DENVER, Dec. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Frontier Airlines (Nasdaq: FRNT - news) announced today that it will begin service to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY), La. effective Feb. 1, and Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport, Fla. (FLL) and Sacramento International Airport, Calif. (SMF) effective Feb. 26. Tickets for flights to and from these cities go on sale Friday, Dec. 7. With the new service, Frontier will serve 27 cities from its Denver hub.

Frontier President and Chief Operating Officer Jeff Potter stated: ``We are encouraged to see that even during difficult times for the airline industry, there is still a demand for reliable, affordable air travel. We look forward to bringing our legendary spirit of the west service and affordable fares to these three new markets and to accommodate this service, we plan to take delivery of our sixth Airbus A319 aircraft in mid-February.''

MSY people are probably ecstatic.

I'd heard the MSY rumor for a couple of weeks now, and pretty much had it confirmed in the middle of last week. It'll be nice to see Frontier in here. Any thoughts on aircraft type?

My guess would be a 2nd flight within a few months
if it does well...like they do in MCO.
Im guessing the A319 will be the aircraft as they will
have 6 in service by then....

Its good there increasing frequency to BWI back to 2 flights a day (they dropped 1 after 9/11).

Frontier is also in the process of acquiring a 3rd and 4th slot at DCA to begin a 2nd daily non-stop flight. I've heard that they will most likely get the 2 additional slots.

News of the FLL service is definitley good news! The Miami-Denver market is a huge O&D market that is overly underserved, especialy since 9/11. United and AA are both daily right now. UA has started new weekend-service and AA re-starts the second daily MIA-DEN next Saturday. I think UA is re-starting double-daily service in January (it is usually triple-daily). Plus, Vanguard offers, starting in a few short days, FLL-DEN service via MCI. Great news!

My guess is Frontier announcing FLL service is in response to Vanguard's announcement of FLL service from MCI.

As far as the MSY service goes, it was definetely needed. United's nonstops go out full just about every day, even the 757 which they are flying right now. MSY-DEN is a big market. F9 gets to capitalize on Super Bowl traffic by starting service on 2/1. When United resumes it's 3rd daily nonstop in a couple of months, MSY-DEN will be served with 5 daily flights...a good total in my opinion.

Within the last year, Jet Blue, Midwest Express, and now Frontier, have started flights to New Orleans. ATA what are you waiting for? lol

I hope that the new sevices work for Frontier (and Vanguard as mentioned above); its good to hear about new services for a change!

I agree with Boeing757/767, I hope they are careful as well. Growth is good but too much growth, espectially with a small airline like Frontier, and they might end up like Midway.

Obviously, Frontier has to be careful - but then they always have been. Sam Addoms, the CEO, has the reputation of being one of the most cautious and conservative, and one of the wisest, around.

In 1998 they had about $8 million in reserves. Today they have about $100 million. Not bad for three years.

They are making money, even in the diastrous last quarter, that inlcuded 9/11. They are reinstating all their pre-9/11 service (except the second daily to Boston - maybe in the spring), restoring wages to pre-9/11 levels, re-hiring laid off staff, bringing back the last the of the parked 737's, replacing the fleet, and adding new destinations.

The stock price (FRNT) has not only recovered to it's pre-9/11 levels, it has exceeded them.

Midway, on the other hand, was on the ropes well before 9/11, cutting flights and destinations and then declaring bankruptcy. 9/11 was simply (one thought) the final nail in their coffin. But no - they are to fly again, thanks to a Fed bailout of around $12 million.

I find it difficult to compare Frontier to Midway.

You really can't compare JI and F9... Midway was competing on the AWEFULLY low yield north-south east coast traffic. DEN is a totally different story.

United has been running 2 daily flights to MIA from DEN.

In regards to FLL, it's an awefully LOW yield city. Low yield doesn't quite increase profits last time I checked..

Great market for Frontier, especially due to United pulling several flights, and downgrading others from larger 757/A320 to 737 and A319. Smart move.
