Afghan Airline Returns To The Skies

Wed Dec 05, 2001 6:53 am

Interesting BBC article about the only Afghan airline's test flight. Sorry if this has been posted before I checked the first page and it appears as if it hasn't.

I'm glad they will be opperating again, maybe someday Ariana Afghan can get some fine Airbus and Boeing aircraft rather then those Russian made aircraft.  Big grin

This article was posted to BBC today by the way.

hahahahaha, A320s  Laugh out loud (now showing on the drop down TVs, "Pentagon bombing tapes of aircraft that weren't as lucky as the one you are on".

On a serious note, here is what came up on the a.net search for their different aircraft:

There was a great article in the LA Times maybe a week ago about how Al-Qaeda used Ariana to move people, guns and drugs around the Middle East. Fascinating, albeit depressing. I'm sure they'll get new planes, and if not brand new, then something close to it, and at a good price.

Hi, Serge - re: Russian planes.

I was lucky enough to fly twice on an IL 62, with Aeroflot and with Interflug. It was one of the most comfortable aircraft I have ever flown - a very smooth ride. I felt completely "safe" on that plane.

Admittedly, the seats were something that only Stalin could love, but, at least on Interflug, the service was outstanding.

I wish a few more airlines were buying Russian aircraft. I'd love to fly on that Tupolev (154?) that looks like the 757.

Cheers

I saw an Ariana 727 in Dubai once. Got a lovely photo of it with the sunrise in the background. It was the same aircraft that was hijacked to London a few years later : YA-FAY.

They might make a fastcomeback like Libyan Arab but Libyan Arab wasn't that bad compared to Ariana. MEA was way better off that them. But it looks like the EU and airbus will step in and help out. look on how quick those new Airbuses found a home with Libyan.

I think that we are overlooking the fact that Afghanistan has many airlines:

Ariana Afghan Airlines

Aryana Airlines

Bakhtar Afghan Airlines

Bakhtar Alwatana

Balkh Airlines

Bamiyan Airlines

Pamir Air

Ariana Afghan is not the only airline.

Firstly, ILS. You will notice that Ariana Afghan Airlines is the only airline which has operated in Afghanistan in the last few years. The rest were merged into Ariana many years ago, or just ceased operations completely. Balkh Airlines, from memory, was an airline set up by the northern warlords.

As to the aircraft which they will operate.

The reason Airbus was able to place A320s with Libyan Arab was because, even though Libya had just come out of sanctions, they still had money to "burn".

Afghanistan on the other hand does not have an economy which is reliant on oil or other natural resources, and as such is quite poor.

As I have suggested before, the most likely fleet for a rejuvenated Ariana Afghan is a fleet of second hand aircraft made up of Tu-154M and other Soviet types.

You must be joking. Ariana Afghan might be better than Northwest, but I can't see travel to that part of the world for years to come.
