VLM AIRLINES was founded in 1992 as the Vlaamse Luchttransport Maatschappij (VLM). The first scheduled flight was on 17 May 1993 from Antwerp to London City Airport. The choice of these two airports was anything but coincidental. Right from it's very early days VLM's philosophy was clearly defined: "To offer regular flights between European business centres using regional airports".
Besides reliability and safety, speed and frequency are of crucial importance to business travellers. VLM AIRLINES upholds these four major factors on all it's daily flights with a fleet of 8 Fokker 50's: highly reliable 50-seaters, tailor-made for short haul flights and a quick turn around.
With this same philosophy in mind, a new route between Rotterdam and London City became operational in April 1994. A nice market was starting to take shape. All the more so in April 1996 when four flights per day were introduced between Düsseldorf Express Airport Mönchengladbach and London City Airport. VLM AIRLINES was a poineer at Düsseldorf Express Airport Mönchengladbach: a regional airport on the edge of the Ruhr region offering all the facilities for fast and stress-free air travel.
In 1998 VLM AIRLINES added two new routes to it's network. In September the signal was given for the start of a three times daily rotation between Rotterdam and Manchester, once more using the Fokker 50. In November of that year VLM AIRLINERS was the first company to offer a direct connection between Luxembourg and London City. With three departures per day from the strategically located Luxembourg, it heralded a further expansion of VLM's already strong position at London City Airport.
In March 1999, VLM AIRLINES was the first Belgian airline to be given the permission to operate flights between Great Britain (London City Airport) and the Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey). VLM AIRLINES passengers now have the chance to fly from Antwerp, Mönchengladbash or Luxembourg, via London City to the Channel Islands.
Finally, from 27 September 1999, VLM AIRLINES has begun flying to Geneva in Switzerland twice a day from it's home base in Antwerp. Not only is this an important Swiss centre of commerce for the businessman, but the flights are also popular with tourist travellers.
VLM AIRLINES is proud of it's collaboration with a number of leading European airline companies. The Antwerp - London City route is flown in collaboration with Sabena, and KLM is the code-share partner for the Rotterdam - London City route. VLM AIRLINES also has flights between Luxembourg - London City in collaboration with Luxair. VLM AIRLINES is the executive airline on all the routes.
From the beginning of 1999, VLM AIRLINES has carried out almost 200 flights to and from London City Airport each week. Where as almost 250 000 passengers were carried on regular service and charter flights in 1998, this number has risen to more than 300 000 passengers on regular services and 20 000 on charter flights last year.
