LH A380s And Frankfurt

Mon Dec 10, 2001 2:54 am

I'm just wondering how Lufthansa are going to accomodate the A380 at FRA. The present Terminal 1 layout was designed for aircraft like the 707 and the 747s are currently just about able to cope with the limited space. However the A380 will mean an increase in wingspan of 30-50 feet in comparison to the 747-400 and therefore restrict operations at T1. Lufthansa will have no choice but to use their A380s out of T2 unless FRA have some sort of masterplan.

Afaik, there were some additional gates added recently when T1 (I think 1B) got an extension of some 100 meters. That terminal extension was only ~3 years ago. Does anybody know if those new parking positions are able to take an A380?

Btw, once again I call LH stupid to buy A380, only a few months after they cancelled their 744-order due to less demand.

The 380 wont be delievered until 2007 ish. By 2003 airline travel is expected to be back to where it was pre 9/11 combined with economic slowdown.LH could probabarly fill a 380 right now on some routes.

If so, why did they cancel that 744 order?

Because the arrivals of the 744 would have been much more imminent.

I think this was the best LH could do! Back in 1992 when Air travel was going really bad Lufthansa ordered some 747-400s and at that time nobody thought that they would ever use them. Now they have 30 or so 744's...
As said before the four 744's that they wanted to order to replace the 742's would have been delivered in 2002 and by then business will probably still be going slow. But once the A380 comes they will probably really need them.

But to your question:
I guess that T1 should be able to handle the A380 at least the gates B24 - B28 and B44 - B48.
The extension of Concourse A that has been mentioned has no capacity to fit the A380. I think it is only for A320's and 737's but I'm not sure about this. At least I have never seen anything larger there yet.

regards,
Max

Dear Ndebele!
Also remember that German companies are huge part of
the airbus projects, so LH is helping the local economy
as well by buying the A380.
From New Yorqatar to Califarbia...

Alessandro, thank you for take care about our local industry. But you should keep in mind that Lufthansa is neither a property of the German state, nore are they a welfare organisation. And they are not helping local economy when buying huge aircraft they don't need and flying empty seats transatlantic.

hehe, lufthansas ceo weber doesn't give a f*ck about supporting german or european industry, he simply wants to make money, money and money  Smile
If the A380 wouldn't make sense for LH, they wouldn't have bought it, believe me  Big grin

Lufthansa needs the A380 for some markets in which 747-400 are of no use, mainly India and Tokio where bilateral treaties or slot regulations limit the number of weekly flights that can be operated. In these markets, an aircraft like the A380 makes perfect sense. Weber recently said that even "today" (i.e. pre S11) there are two or three routes for which Lufthansa would like to have A380s available.
