8 Hours Nonstop On 727?

Wed Dec 12, 2001 4:17 am

This morning, I saw a 727-200 of Lloyd Aero Boliviano in Miami. It's not the first time I have seen it, and they also fly A310s here. I started wondering what route it flies to get here, and on checking their website, they list flights 900 / 901 nonstop between Santa Cruz, Bolivia (VVI) and Miami, and return, sometimes operated with 722, sometimes with 310. The 722 flight duration, NON STOP is listed as 8 hours! Can this really be so? Travelocity.com has the same flights listed. Would be interesting to know how the 722 flies so far. The distance appears to be a little over 3200 miles.

Just checked Boeing's website, and they show a maximum range of 2500 miles for a 722. I would love to know how LB manages this, anyone with any inside information??? I did notice that the aircraft had winglets fitted, so maybe it is also modified with extra fuel tanks?

That's a long time in a 722. I would simply venture a guess that it makes a technical stop somewhere for fuel. I think the payload restrictions to get out for 8 hours would pretty much kill any hope of making money with that plane on that segment.

Just an idea though.

There's definately a stop on the 727 flight!

Amadeus lists the flight durations of American Airlines' 757 and LAB's A310 flights as 6h42 and 6h30 respectively - both non-stop. While LAB's 727 flights are listed as non-stop, the duration is 8h00 each way - even though this is beyond the range of the 727, and the 727 flies faster than the 757/A310, so it wouldn't take 90-100 minutes longer to complete the same non-stop flight.

Bit misleading by LAB though, to list an flight with a tech stop as "non-stop" when it obviously isn't.

I think that it makes a technical stop in Panama City.

Crosswind and AirafriqueDKR - Yes, that makes a lot of sense. And the fact it is listed as 8 hours when the others do it in 6:30 to 6:45 kind of supports the theory it must stop. Strange they can get away with listing it as "Non-Stop" when it clearly isn't don't you think?

I'd leap at the chance to do a long flight in a 727 these days, there aren't many left.

longest rev pax flts i have seen by a b727-200 were the ones by royal airlines back in the mid 90,s that operated non-stop 75 percent of the time bgi-yyz.enroute time would come in at approx 5:20-5:30hrs.we would plan long range cruise setting, yhm for the alternate, and no hold fuel.if things were anybit iffy we planned fuel stops at bwi.

I dont think airlines will say its a technical stop on the scheudle because they wont be picking any new passengers up at that stop. So technically it is a non stop just a little delay in between to get fuel.

Forgive me for asking, but are any time zone changes involved and/or taken into consideration when you do your math, or does the schedule show an en route time? Not trying to be a smart alec, just double checking.

IIRC back in the 80's Icelandair would fly REK-YYC-YVR with 722 equipment. The Reykjavik-Calgary portion of the flight was 3180 miles, and it was non-stop. My hunch is it was severely weight-restricted... probably why they stopped flying the route  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Bernard,
I think the easiest way to answer your question from my point of view is to go to the Amadeus CRS website
http://www.amadeus.net/home/index.htm
Enter the route
From: SRZ
To: MIA
Instead of Search for "Availability only" select "Timetable"
You can just leave the default dates in

It will show a full timetable from Santa Cruz to Miami, with airlines, aircraft types, flight times, durations and routes. Amadeus can be very useful site for looking stuff up!

Hope this is useful

Cool tool Crosswind... and it also shows non stop, 8 hours on a 727! Some clever false advertising by LAB I think!
