How Big Was Eastern? Hubs? And Eastern To Slc?

I was just wondering how big Eastern was when they were ya know... big. Where were their hubs (ATL and MIA) i know any others? and wow they flew to SLC. Where else did they fly out west?

EA also had a hub at MCI for awhile. Out west, they flew to LAX, PHX, SFO, DEN, SEA, PDX among others.

I only know the number of daily departures out of ATL and MIA.From ATL at its peak Eastern had 309 daily flights from MIA it had 125.

They were even in San Diego for part of the 1980s. Flights to Kansas City!

For at least two consecutive years in the late '70s - early '80s, Eastern was #1 among U.S. airlines in the number of passengers carried.

Charlotte (CLT) was an EA mini-hub for many years; Houston (IAH) was a small hub for EA in the early '80s. During the late '80s, Philadephia was a short-lived EA hub, which was sold to the original Midway Airlines shortly before its demise.

During the mid '70s, EA was "the official airline" of the then-new Disney World theme park, making Orlando (MCO) a major focus city. Other focus cities for EA through the '70s-'80s were Washington National (DCA), New York (especially LGA), Boston, and Philadelphia.

Eastern Air Lines operated full-fledged "hub" facilities in the following cities:


They also had large-scale operations (some connecting banks, but not a full hub operation) in the following cities:

EAL was way bigger in South America and the Carribean. People there remeber them way more than PAN AM. When AA bought the EAL rights to those places they became #1. UA and DL bought PA 's rights. The PA routes from what I heard were split in half. UA and DL presence there is a trckle compared to AA.

And much of BN's South American network was acquired with Panagra.

I miss Eastern. Their main hub was Atlanta, but thier headquarters were in Miami. When they sold thier Latin American routes to American (1991 I believe), AA's presence at MIA went from about 12 daily flights one day to over 80 the next.

I hope this gives you some new information on Eastern. I posted this in another forum several months ago.

This once venerable airline is now a footnote in aviation history but, it is alive and well in my heart and will be forever! Remember the "Golden Falcoln," "The Wings Of Man," the original airline of Walt Disney World? None other than that great late airline Eastern! This airline along with Pan Am put Miami International on the map! Eastern had the most diverse and interesting fleet of aircraft in the sky! EAL kept the Connie and the Electra high and flying alaong with Martin 404's while they introduced the L1011! But wait, there's more! They had a couple of 747's early in the 70's and lest we not forget DC-10's and A-300's. I believe that Eastern was one of the few airlines that flew each of the pioneering first generation of wide bodied aircraft that were home grown (not from aquired birds in mergers such as National/Pan Am) I always thought their liveries were classics, especially the "Fly Eastern" Golden Falcolns that adorned their birds up until 1964. Their "hockey stick logo" grew on you and was simple but always modern and classic looking up to the end. It's a shame, that this great powerhouse crashed from turbulent economic times and the corporate raiding/raping craze during the "Reagan 80's." Had Eastern been able to hang in there a few more years I feel this airline would be one of the great powerhouses today. For sure, they would have 777's, 340's and 717's as the "Wings of Man" in the 21st. century. As a kid, Eastern was by far the most glamourous airline that served BWI (Baltimore Washington International) then known as "Friendship Airport." No offense to you US Airways afficianados: but USAirways to Miami does not have that same feel and panache that Eastern had! And, Eastern never flew the tubby little 737! Again, no offense to 737 fans but I feel that the 727 and 757 are much more clean asthetically looking planes than the 737, especially the 3 and 4 hundred series with the ugly flattened at the bottom engines. National and Pan Am are flying again to some extent, maybe Eastern will return!
