Airlines From USA Into Africa

Mon Dec 17, 2001 6:34 pm

Are there airlines from the USA that fly into Africa themselves.
I know there are codeshared flights, like NWA flightno's on KLM airplanes/flights for instance.

Any usefull answer will be appreciated.

Was there not a short-lived airline called USAfrica that flew md-11's from ATL(?) to Jo'berg via dakar in the early 90's. They had a livery similar to old US air colors i think.

AdamHarvard - nope, USAfrica flew twp MD11s leased from American Airlines - N1757A and N1758B - (there's a logical aircraft to use if you're a start-up and need to conserve the pennies) from IAD to CPT and JNB.

Not too surprisingly, they only lasted a few months after taking something like five years to get up and running. It ceased operations in February 1995, (after starting in June 2nd 1994) and tried to restart but not surprisingly no one was interested in investing; though they did announce a tie-up with Continental.

World Airways and Southern Air Transport were subsequently granted the rights to the routes by the DOT.

This was an 'affirmative action' airline, headed by Gregory Lewis and chaired by Wesley Kaldahl.

Will AA take over TW's former JFK-CAI-RUH route?

I believe World Airways will start scheduled services to Lagos in the near future.

Their Houston-Sal Island-Luanda flight is a charter service under the control of Sonangol, the Angolan national oil company.

I know I have seen Ghana Airways DC-10's at BWI but it doesn't say anything about it on Ghana's site. I guess they just haven't updated. I really wouldn't think there would be that much of a market for Ghana at BWI but a guess it's been working out for them(not that I'm complaining or anything. It just seems that almost every other intl. airline flies to IAD and any bigger jets here are a pleasant surprise.)

By the way, I know AirafriqueDKR already said this but I'm just putting my two cents in.

I believe Air Namibia has unused weekly traffic rights on the Windehok-Miami-Houston route. I would not mind seeing them excersise that right, and I think the flight could do really well.

I think a well-run airline from NY/Washington/Chicago to Lagos, Nairobi, Jo'burg would work if they had good reliability, major airline link up and low fares.

767-300ER could make this trip no?

No USA flag carrier flies from the US to East, west or southern Africa. They code share (Star Alliance, oneworld, etc). but the American flag is not seen in these further parts of Africa.

I could see American Airlines serving South Africa from Miami in the far future. South Africa is a pretty high yield market, but AA does not have planes to make the trip non-stop. The problem is, most Americans going to Africa go via Europe, and European carriers make a killing in Africa. African routes are huge money makers for Air France and the former Sabena, among others.

In the early 80's Pan Am flew from JFK to Monrovia, Liberia. I don' tknow if they flew other African routes.

oh yeah, ghana airways does get quite the load to jfk. their dc-10's typically take off with an excess of 240 souls on board. im not sure about bwi, but im sure that would be pretty high too. you'd be surprised to know that there are loads of ghanaians in the dc area...

When I was a kid, I lived in Monrovia and went to the American school (ACS) there. Robertsfield was quite a significant base for Pan Am, and there were a fair number of expat staff based there.

In fact, my first flight on Pan Am was on 30 November 1978, on N491PA, routed LOS-ROB-JFK.

Good old Zambia Airways used to fly twice weekly from Lusaka-Monrovia-New York JFK with a DC10-30.
The route went like this; JNB-LUN-ROB-JFK-ROB-LUN-JNB. This was late 80's till early 90's.
