LAKELAND -- A large MD80, often used by air carriers to carry passengers, made several landings and takeoffs from Lakeland Linder Regional Airport shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday, according to controllers in the airport's tower.

The sound of the large, low-flying aircraft caused several nearby residents to call police, thinking the plane was making an emergency landing.

An operator in the control tower said this was normal and that many planes use the run-way to practice takeoffs and landings or touch-and-go procedures.

Earlier in the evening, U.S. Air Force Gulfstream 5 passenger jets made similar touch-and-go practice runs, said Charles Gunter, the airport's manager.

On Thursday, Lakeland Linder also experienced a large number of corporate jets bringing executives in for work and conferences before the holiday slowdown, he said.

"We are a training airport for many flights and we are a popular corporate landing site," Gunter said of the city's general aviation airport.

The airport records 400 to 500 landings and takeoffs every day, including the practice runs, corporate jets and propeller aircraft, he said.

Residents can expect more practice runs from larger aircraft including airlines and charter flights in the new year, he said.

"Our instrument landing system and several other types of landing systems here at the airport make us a popular place to practice," Gunter said.

Only in a podunk newspaper can an MD-80 be considered large.
