Europe's MD-80's

Thu Dec 27, 2001 12:43 am

There are a lot of MD-80 operators in Europe who have not announced a replacement for them.(Alitalia, Iberia,
Austiran, Air Lib, Avioimpex, SAS etc) What will they order? Most of them have 320's in their fleet but in the case of Alitalia, Iberia and SAS these 320's are not bought as a replacement for the MD-80's.

SAS have gotten rid of the DC-9-21's and continue to phase out DC-9-41's. They will probably phase out the MD-80, but they are not that old, and a replacement is not needed right now.
When that day comes they choise is either 737NG or A320 family. When SAS choosed the 737NG it was because the A320's were much more expensive. Since, the A321 have started operations in SAS and romours are saying that SAS are not satisfied with their 737's. It will be interesting to see what will happen to them.

If I'm not wrong, I've heard that Alitalia will replace (sooner or later) its MD82 fleet with A319.

Air Lib wants to replace its MD-8X fleet with the A32X family, likely the A319,320 and 321.

hi
Air Lib is struggling to find money and keep the current planes flying....so replacement of the MDs is a view of the mind
AZ should be replacing the MD's with A32X, they already use an A321 on CDG-MXP or FCO along with the MD's
IB is definitely commited to the A32X family
SK had forecast (source being SK assistant manager @ CDG) the replacement with mainly the A321 in order to increase trafic out of CDG,FRA and LHR to CPH to feed the new fleet of A340-A330

it looks (sadly?) nobody wants the B717 as an MD's replacement

What's the problem SAS has with the 737NGs ? Interesting to hear that they are not satisfied as South African recently announced that they would get rid of their brand-new B737-800s and gave the same "reason" (which is, I hear, lack of passenger apeal compared to the A320 they used to operate, lack of belly-capacity etc.). Any other 737NG operators that have complained about the aircraft ?
