What Is A Good MD-80 Replacement

Thu Dec 27, 2001 5:32 am

I know that the MD-80's have alot more years to go before replacement, but what would be a good replacement? The 737NG's and the A320 series are not suitable in my eyes. The MD-80 is a low capacity, high frequecy aircraft with a short turn-around time which is crucial to maintaing low cost. I don't think the 737's and A320 series are best fitted for those types of routes. What do you guys think?

The MD-90 and 95 would be a good replacement.

For the time being Boeing will keep making the 717, so that would be the most natural replacement.

I think that A319/320 are suitable alternatives. UA uses them on routes that AA uses the M80 on.

What about some of the 737NG's?

Well, the 737NG was made to replace the 737 classics, and the MD-880 was made to compete with those classics, so it could work.

The best replacement would be a stretched 717.

How could you possibly replace a MD81/82/83 with a DC9-32 sized Boeing 717-200 ? It is even too small to replace the MD87 which is basically a DC9-40 sized MD.

Take the A320 if you want just a replacement as it , with its wider cabin, fits in best comfort-wise, compared to the comfy 2+3 MD80 cabin layout. If you need growth, go for the A321 as SAS, Iberia, Austrian and Swissair did.

I think the 737-700 is the ideal replacement. They can cover the range of an MD80, the passenger capacity is similar and they can handle short hops. Their tenure with Southwest has proven that they can handle the quick turns as well.

The range of the 717-200 is not adequate to serve as a MD80 replacement.
