Old Int'l Destinations From PHL In 70s/80s

I was driving by the old international terminal at PHL the other day and was wondering what airlines flew international routes from PHL in the 1970s and 1980s? I remember Air Jamaica and Lufthansa had service in the late 80s, but were there others?

Didn't Pan Am have service somewhere? I remember seeing one of their planes at PHL when I was young.

Swissair used to fly PHL-BOS-ZRH with a 747-300. Northwest briefly operated a PHL-AMS route in cooperation with KLM on a DC10-30/40, TWA had a flight from PHL to London/Heathrow with an L1011. TW sold it to US Airways along with the BWI-LHR route and because US Air was and still is not a Bermuda II airline, it operates the PHL route to LGW.

Didn't AA usem to fly PHL-LHR? I am pretty sure Lufthansa started PHL service in 2000. Though maybe they served PHL in the late 1980s and pulled out?

Lufthansa pulled out from PHL in the early 90's(I think 93) and came back recently.

American Airlines DID briefly operate a PHL-LHR route with a 767-300ER but dropped it, perhaps to add a sixth frequency from JFK or somewhere else.

wow i never knew aa flew to lhr from phl. i wish we still had it. it would be nice to see swissair again but i doubt it will happen.

Yes, AA did fly PHL-LHR. It was around the mid 90s before their alliance with BA.

While driving in the vicinity of PHL in 1970, I saw an Air France billboard advertising jet service to Paris - although their PHL-ORY (before CDG was opened!) flight was almost certainly operated with 707 equipment at the time, the aircraft pictured on the billboard was a Caravelle!

And before British Airways came into being, BOAC flew PHL-LHR. During a trip through PHL in 1972 I stopped at the BOAC counter to pick up a timetable. The English gentleman (easily identified by his accent) behind the counter let me know why I should choose BOAC on my PHL-LHR flight: their VC-10s used on the service had rear-mounted engines and, thus, a quieter cabin!

I believe that AA first tried to switch the PHL-LHR slot to a non-Bermuda II city, but that was denied to them.

...PA, TW and BOAC each had a daily nonstop to Heathrow, AF had four/week to Orly, and AZ had 1/week to Milan and 2/week to Rome.
