Which US airlines do you think will go bust this year?
I'm thinking US Airways, and possibly america west and United.......????????????????????

The two most likely to go out of business are definietly America West and AirTran.
I also wouldn't be surprised if US Airways, United, or Midwest Express left us, but I don't think it'll happen any time soon.

Right now, AA seems alright and that it will get back on its feet. But, since Sept. 11 and the shoebomber, the airline has been shown to be a hot terrorist target. If the attacks keep coming, look for American to beat everyone else to bankruptcy court.

America West & Vanguard are in the most vulnerable cash flow position. Even with their bailout money and any extra funds from a gov't loan program their future is bleak. US Airways is also right up there, but chose not to apply for the additional loan.

I agree with Av8trxx.....AWA and Vanguard are the most vulnerable. Air tran is in relatively good shape.

NBC News, you have no idea what you are talking about. AA is fine, despite the fact that they have had a lot of troubles. Unlike other airlines, AA is in a position were they can handle what is happening to them. It is not pretty, but they are not going anywhere.

Exsqueeze me? Baking powder? For those of you who have been in a cocoon since the first week of September, America West got a much-needed $380 million loan guarantee from the federal government. Plus, they have some of the highest load factors and best operational numbers going in the whole industry. They are on the path to sucess, if anything.

Even with the loan, HP is on a the industry Titanic watch. On any given day at SkyHarbor now, there are a dozen of their aircraft parked because they can't afford to operate them. It's sad. A friend of mine has been there 9 years and fully expects to turn out the lights and close the doors at a moments notice...

I think American, United and Delta, along with their global alliances, will remain in the market. Northwest and other smaller carriers will have to team up with the larger carriers as regional feeders if they are willing to remain flying.
That´s the most likely scenario, since we are not expecting a booming world economy, hydrogen-fueled planes, etc for the next two years or so.

Ciro has the best post I've seen in here. If anybody thinks that UA is going bust they are drinking something! Load factors are going up steadily and advance bookings for the summer are good. The only reason the stock is in the tank is the outstanding labor contracts once they are signed, and they will be, watch the stock rise. Its actually a good by right now. America West is in trouble, And US is ailing but UsAir may just eck this one out. Wolf is still going to sell it. That's the kind of CEO he is. He has never RUN an airline. He just a used car salesman.

I would like to see US Airways stay, around from the people that I have dealt with, they seem the most eager to obtain your business
UAL is a good bet with all their internal issues, I believe UAL is a good bet to reduce their global reach. Perhaps become a regional feed to their alliance partners. Once again UAL is the worst airline I believe in the skies.

Vanguard has been rhumored to have been dying for like three years now, but keeps chugging away. So who knows?
US is pipping a long, good that Metrojet is gone.
I don't see Midway staying around for much longer.
ATA in my view has completely lost its focus. Vacation charter airline or low-fare business airline? They're lost and thats not good.

If UAL would go out of business, LH would have a big problem in the future, with its main competitors in europe tied more or less to AA (BA) and DL (AF).
I'm not sure if this would be legaly viable, but I could imagine that LH and maybe other STAR members would take interest in UAL to maintain the airline operating. Remember what UA/LH did when AMR tried to take over Air Canada...

Hmmmm. No. I think that honor goes to Northwest, America West, Lufthansa, and Iberia. People don't seem to complain about UA as much as when the summer of 2000 happened.

United is going to make it. They have reduced their losses to just over a million dollars a day, which while still big, is nowhere near $20 million a day, which is what they were losing in October. Once the pay concessions go through, United will start making a profit. It's the last step they need to take.

GE CF6 Powered A330-200s
Recently, Air France took delivery of their first GE CF6 powered A330-200s. Since this engine type apears not to be very popular with the A330, who (except Aer Lingus) is also operating 332s with the GE engine?
Any idea why the CF6 is so unpopular with the A330? And which engine is most popular? Guess it's the RR Trent, right?

US didn't take the US government loan?! They aren't even making a profit, and were probably going to head to bankrupcy at some time within the next two years. Now they've lost MILLIONS from the reduction in air travel and from having their vital centre of business at DCA shut down for almost a month and they didn't take the loan? Methinks that the management at UA, pissed their merger didn't go through, is going to drive this airline into the ground...hmm, that may be a poor choice of words, but you get my drift. 
My guess is Midway will use up their loan within the next few months and they'll be forced to succumb to lessors demanding their brand-spanking-new 737-700s back, as well as other debts, and they'll be gone for good. AirTran will make it, as far as I know they are one of the few airlines that are MAKING money.

Midway is definately going- as for American, WHERE ARE YOU PEOPLE GETTING THESE IDEAS?!! American has been around for YEARS and will still be around for YEARS to come! They're like what- rated in the top ten major US carriers?!! Wake up and smell the jet fuel!!
It's hard to considder what exactly is an airline these days. People don't know how to manage their money and everyone is loosing financially due to 9/11, if not majorly, it at least shook them up and put a dent in their bank account. Right now, everyone seems to be hanging on and pulling themselves to their feet, but once the boat hits the next swell, there's no telling who will go overboard.

United is definetly not the worst airline. I mean come on. They have three classes, real silver silverware in first, and their pilots now have tazers.

ATA lost? i dont think so. they are doing fine, have a new livery, new planes are being delivered, and are adding international destinations for vacationers, while at the same time, making the airline more business like for the business travelers. ATA has a great future ahead, imo.
