Hajj flights to start from 16th
ISLAMABAD: The Hajj flights for Saudi Arabia would start from January 16 and continue till February 16 from Hajj terminals of Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta airports. The inaugural Hajj flight would leave Islamabad from January 16 for Saudi Arabia which would be followed by regular flights on January 17 from other four terminals, Joint Secretary, Hajj, Ministry of Religious Affairs, Muhammad Azam Rathore told PTV on Tuesday.

About 120,000 intending pilgrims will travel by air -- 90 per cent by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and 10 per cent by Saudi Airlines, he added. Rathore said the return of Hujjaj from Saudi Arabia will start from February 24 and the task will be completed at the end of March. Nearly 366 flights will be operated, he said.

Just curious...is there a particular time of year for Hajj, or is it normally just during the cooler months of winter?

There are specific months for performing the Hajj and are called “Months of Pilgrimage.”

These three Islamic months are Shawwal, Ze-Qa’d and Dul-Hajj. During these three “Months of Hajj”, one prepares for the pilgrimage, attains good morals, and completes other physical conditions for the pilgrimage.

All the essential duties of the pilgrimage have to be completed between 8th and the 13th day of Dul-Hajj. Additional tawaaf (circling around the Ka’ba), however, may be performed until the end of the month of Dul-Hajj.

The season of Haj is celebrated with Eid at the end.

Many airlines operate during the Haj season from Manchester and Heathrow. These include: Royal Jordanian, Syrian Air, Yemenia, Saudi Arabian, Egypt Air and PIA. As illustrated in the above pics.

Well GF-A330, the two 747-100s on your picture are in fact Icelandic - owned and operated by Atlanta Icelandic airlines, wett leased by Saudi Arabian.

Atlanta Icelandic has a long tradition helping Saudi during the Hajj. Sometimes they paint the planes accordingly - as on your picture, sometimes not.

GF-A330 - what western dates do these months equate with, or do they fall on different times each year (The Islamic calendar only has 10 months, doesnt it?)? If not, then when this year? Or is there no specific time? Is Ramadan one of these months, or is that something different?

Sorry, this is a tad off topic, but hey, I think if we are going to ask these questions, we may as well know the wholoe background - not to mention if we have any hope of cooperation between different cultures.

Anyway, I look forward to finding out the specifics

the islamic calendar has 12 months. The months are all lunar so they are not fixed generally in an islamic year there are 354 days divided into 12 months so the Hajj goes back 11 days every year

Hi Preben Norholm!

Actually both of those Air Atlanta Icelandic 747-100 have been returned to their owners and/or scrapped.

I am not sure what aircrafts they will be using this year - all I know is that TF-ABQ will be one of them.

Reykjavik Aviation Photography - Just bring the aircraft to us and we'll photograph them! :-)

Where do all these people stay once in Jeddah? Do they all get hotels, or do they know family, or are they put up in like temproray housing?

I can't imagien thousands of Pakistanis and Syrians (very poor countries) can afford a hotel for a month or however long the hadj is.

Also, how much is a hadj flight, say roundtrip from like Islamabad to Jeddah?

thanks

They travel from the JED airport to Mecca (and Medina) in chartered busses and are "housed" in tents (mostly).
Quite a sight.

Saudia uses many leased aircraft for the Hajj....

e.g. from Kuwait Airways:

or Air Atlanta

Quite a lot of the Air Atlanta fleet are currently in storage at Manston, Kent.

Maybe they are just resting in readiness for a hectic flying programme ahead.

I´ve seen Air Atlanta 747-267B TF-ABP at Hongkong recently with fresh Saudia markings (old-style green tail and old titles, strange that they still put them on newly leased aircraft 5 years after introducing the new livery!!!)
