The Fastest You Have Flown?

Sun Jan 13, 2002 8:13 pm

On a flight from Copenhagen to Singapore with SQ, A340-300 after having had some hours of sleep I looked at the PTV and was surprised to see that ground speed was 1222 km/h. We were at that time flying over India. I do not remember what the tail wind was, but it had to have been enormous.

1100+ km/h range is pretty common over the Pacific. I got to 1201km over the Pacific around Japan once (CX744) but I've never seen 1222km/h! 1222 is all the more impressive because the A340-300 has a lower cruise speed than a 744. I wonder if anyone has had a higher ground speed ( Concorde travellers need not reply). What about some pilots out there?

YVR-YYZ on CP B747-200 in mid-seventies... 3h 25m gate to gate (scheduled 4h 10m) -- well over 600 mph, had 155 kt tailwind for part of the journey.

LHR-JFK on KU at 670mph....that's odd, going east to west? Not the other way?

Cheers,

As for commercial planes, I have no clue, but with me at the control during training, with my instructors approval, I have redlined my Cessna 172S to 160 knots airspeed, which combined with a very strong tailwind made for a groundspeed of 196 kts as shown by the onboard GPS! Prior to that, we took advantage of the wind in a very different way, turning into it and performing slow flight so that we flew backwards! This is when the wind speed was more powerful than our airspeed, and creeped backwards at a GS of about -3 knots or so. This was on Wednesday of this past week.

HNL/LAX in a GARUDA MD11 in 3hrs 18min...its
normally 4hrs 30min....and NRT/LAX in a SQ B743
in about 8hrs....high tail winds obviously in effect

Flew home ORD-CPH and somwhere over northern Canada we reached a bit over 1000km/h. But our a/c was a SK 767 which can not be compared with a 747...

Went SYD-BKK-LHR last year on Qantas 744 (VH-OJF).

Had problems with radar equipment after takeoff, one hour cruising circles and eights above Sydney skyline at approx. FL50 in sunset light (nice sightseeing tour!), then dropped 95.000 kg of fuel, got back and a/c was repaired.

Passengers were quite upset due to missing their connecting flights at BKK or LHR.

During taxiing for our second departure we were told by the captain that he convinced the management to get some extra fuel and had the fuel tanks refilled to the max (for the "short" 9 hours leg to BKK!). And we should prepare for an "extraordinary high speed flight".

In fact, we left SYD about 215 mins late, had always between 1050 to 1100 km/h ground speed on the display, went straight through a thunder storm above Indonesia and arrived at BKK less than two hours late.

Turn around in BKK took about 105 mins, 15 more than planned, and we took off from BKK about 125 mins late.

Overall ground speed was lower on the second (much longer) leg, and fell to an low 910 km/h near Nepal and India.

Unfortunately, we had no air speed or tail/head wind display on VH-OJF, but I think about 100 km/h are quite normal for that area.

Came to rest about 55 mins late at an very busy morning at LHR.

Qantas already changed our reservations to the flight to MUC one hour later than planned.

Servus,
Alex

1390 mph (~2225 kph), Mach 2.00, 4th December 2001, BA02, Concorde G-BOAF, JFK-LHR.

In 3 Concorde flights I've never topped Mach 2.00 but at 1390 mph the flight took 3 hours 26 minutes - not a record but apparently unusual, according to Captain Bannister, anyway, and he should know.

On a side note, the highest altitude I've seen on the Concorde cabin display is 58,000 ft but my GPS showed 59,500 ft. Given that the altitude flown is presumably based on a standrad altimeter setting I'm assuming the GPS reading was more accurate, within a couple of hundred feet.

Condor DC-10 D-ADSO, PMI-FRA

The monitor in the front of the cabin said something like 1150km/h. (Can you believe that? I somehow doubt...)

in the civilian world about the average of any large airliner.

in the Air Force, I've done MAch 1.07 in a T-38 several times

in General Aviation aircraft I've redlined a 172

Compared to what some of you have flown, my fastest seems slow now. It was on a Swissair A330-200 in June of 2001 flying from ATL to ZRH and we were going 607 mph for most of the flight. We were very high though at 41000 feet.

ive flown LHR-DEL in about 7:30 on AI, which must have been quite quick, having taken off at least an hour (maybe 2) late and getting there on time or slightly late. this was back in 98 or 99 during early december!
i think the distance is about 4500 miles, which is roughly 7250km.

hey, wud it be possible for the 747 to go above mach 1, if it were fitted with more powerful engines, its top speed is mach .92, but say if the engines were more powerful and there was a good tail wind???
would it be possible for a 747 to go faster than mach 1 with the current engines???
this is a dumb post (this reply i mean), but interesting i think, obviously the aircraft would be unstable e.t.c having been designed for sub sonic flight!
if and when the sonic cruiser goes into production, and gets into the skies, it will fly at mach .98, what if it went a little faster for whatever reason, say tail wind, or for whatever reason, what would the effects be if it passed the sound barrier, i.e. above mach 1??

Amo757, you're confusing ground speed (the speed over the ground) with air speed (the speed through the air). Think of it like it was a boat on a flowing river: if the river is flowing at 2 knots and the boat is going downstream at a speed of 10 knots through the water, the speed past the bank is 12 knots. If the boat turns around, its speed past the bank is only 8 knots even though the speedometer says its going 10 knots throught the water. The same thing applies to airplanes. The Mach number relates to speed through the air, only.
