Well, regarding FR... actually no.. I've had some really nice cabin music played during boarding sometimes... Not sure if it's up to the base or whatever though...

Back in the day Ryanair used to play some awful music on boarding, but they play some pleasant tracks now. Certainly up until last year it was Mozart or another classical composer, but I've heard new modern track(s) lately which seem to be custom actually.

Classical Ryanair - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQDlTqh0kVw
Modern Ryanair - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqHBM4d9f-Q and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqZdBfQyiQg (0.45 onwards).

Wow! That is a HUGE improvement since the last time I flew with them!!!

Does it surprise anybody that NE used to play "Yellowbird" during boarding?

This is actually from a popular and fairly well-known musician in Japan. I was really surprised to hear my brother-in-law playing it in his car one day, as part of a "greatest hits" CD. But I cannot remember the artist's name right now.

Anyway it's not just the generic muzak that it sounds like at first.

Traveling Notes by Taro Hakase.

This song is "Another Sky"
Traveling Notes is the album name

One time on TG in BKK, while boarding a 380...........there was this instrumental that was vaguely familiar, but I couldn't pinpoint it. Then it dawned on me that it was the same music that Air Canada uses when you are on hold.

Still don't know the name....but it's a pretty funny coincidence!!

I hate boarding music on aircraft or any other background music I don't have control over. I much prefer airlines that don't use it. There's enough noise in public places today without adding to it.

I have always thought that airlines should, as often as possible, play music that heightens the excitement of the destination you're going to. I recall VARIG playing Bossa Nova, UA playing Hawaiian music and so on. I know this was mentioned above, and that some airlines do this to some degree already, but if I was king of a global airline, that's what I'd want to do.

United was probably the first airline who understood the power of "sonic branding" when Leo Burnett sold them on the idea of buying the rights to Rhapsody in Blue (an idea first pitched to TWA by Y&R.) After the disappointment of the then the CD from Y&R not being able to sell the idea to TWA, he went to Leo Burnett and successfully sold the idea to UA.

Although, UA originally over did it. Fliers were complaining they were just sick of it after a number of years. I think that even pre-merger UA got it right, it's right place was for advertising and safety video's and phone calls.

One thing I would also do as king, I'd create a trademarked, very mild, fragrance that set my airline apart. Sort of a "new car smell" kind of fragrance. Example: Perhaps if United Polaris is a success, and is widely thought of as a great experience, then nothing sticks to the "lizard-brain" like smell!

That's very interesting that TWA was shopped the idea of Rhapsody first! I'm glad it went to an airline that survived the 21st century.

I agree on all counts except for maybe using it as hold music. I liked the PMUA hold music, but I know many who developed a negative association with Rhapsody in Blue after spending too much time on hold with UA.

It might be a little off topic, but wouldn't be great if some airline played the "The Chicken Dance" during deplaning?

Old Etihad music is gorgeous. I listen to it at least a couple times a week.

I remember back in the '90s a staple of AA boarding was playing this relaxing video on the overhead screens with classical / low energy music in the background.

AA used to play Richard Burmer's "Across the view" and Mychael Danna's "Dierdre of Sorrows," per FT Forums on their nature videos throughout the 90s. Enya's work made numerous appearances in AA commercials in the early-mid 90s.

EK pipes their music in every opportunity they possibly can, but I used to hear Jazzanova's "Coffee talk," Osunlade's "Touched my soul," and Ten Madison's "Sands of time" as part of their boarding playlist in 2013 and 2014.

I've yet to hear any music on a QR jet that is listed on youtube under QR's brand. There's a middle eastern tune from an older movie that gets played quite a bit, in addition to a random other tune that has a few notes that seem to repeat themselves. See here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhW7AKvqUVA the song can be heard faintly in the background
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOIR1JVOsRo is the other. Comments section reveal it is "Ella enta"

Air Asia plays current pop.
OZ has a steady orchestra theme.
CA's musical accompaniment switches back and forth between Chinese and Western orchestral pieces.
I think VX changes their playlist on a quarterly basis.

I'm not interested in an airline's custom sound track if I'm being honest, I recently flew Cebu Pacific who have a line up of popular hip hop and pop music which really brought good vibes to me before jetting off to my destination :D

They actually changed it now. It is now just some hideous flute playing the previous boarding music.

Recently when I flew Vietjet SGN - DAD they played a nice little piece called 'Hello Vietnam' performed by Quynh Anh.

The post-merger US Airways music (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFEK9aGPOdI) survives as phone reservations hold music for AA; it gives me flashbacks when I hear it these days (mostly pleasant ones :) )

That would be appropriate for deplaning on a 757-300

Right now QR play this music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcdWm-M_PWc - I flew on them last week. During boarding, taxi, shortly after takeoff and after arriving at the gate during deplaning. A few years back QR used to have this track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtsVUnx6JbY - both very good in my opinion.

I actually download a lot of these tracks from Youtube and program my own music manager for flight sim so they all play at the right stages of my simulated flights :), the ME3 have some of the best tracks in my opinion, although I prefer their older tracks compared to the newer revamped ones (like old Etihad).

When AirTran was around I should have dared the flight crew to play "Rainy Night in Georgia" by Brook Benton when they were boarding a WX delayed flight to ATL!

Curiouly, when I flew DL from SXM about two years ago.. Adiemus was playing in the boarding area. It went back to the then-current mix after.

Yes... that US 734 safety video includes the song! Thanks for finding it. Wish we knew the name of the piece.
