Input on JetBlue starting a new focus city in San Diego

Thu Jun 16, 2016 9:22 pm

It is no secret that JetBlue will start to expand in the west-coast. What are your ideas on San Diego becoming the new focus city? I believe it serves as their bet option because the other markets are over-saturated in competition. That being LAX, SFO, SEA.

I could see SAN as a focus city if they were trying to get West Coast - Latin/South America flow.. otherwise, it seems out of place for west coast US flights... but, that's just my opinion.. SJC sounds better to me..

My opinion as an ex San Diegan -- the city is very well served with Southwest and the legacies. And as already noted -- geographically, the city is a bit off on its own. Even for Latin America it is not that great - sure further south but quite far west.

I also agree with SJC, expect for the whole curfuew thing. But i feel like if the go with SAN then LGB needs to go away, or just become an outstation. Like said above SAN is a bit off on its own, yes it is in a socal area, but it is very well served by everyone

How about adding SAN/LGB/LAX as a SoCal base and SJC/SFO/OAK as a NorCal base?

They already have one space-limited focus in SoCal... why do they need another?

Terrible location for any cnnx aside from the northwest to Mexico.

While I think SAN and SJC certainly have the O&D I think they are both limited on gate space.

While I don't know about JetBlue's O&D in SMF but that city just built a beautiful (but also expensive I hear) brand new terminal giving them great ability for gates and connectivity both new gates and old. With California government based there, I would assume there would be some decent fares as well.

I'm sure the airport authority would certainly cut them a deal if they wanted to make a focus city there.

SAN is already extremely well served. Just about every market has at least two competitors. Alaska and Southwest have large focus cities and DL/AA/UA all have sizable presences with DL serving non-hub markets too. And then there's NK...... And no gate space.
