It seems an AA crew member stopped this from getting worse.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time this has happened. I try to seat UM's close to the galley where we can keep an eye on them and seat them with a nice senior lady with a caring smile or with a family and ask mom to keep and eye out for me.
One day I was waiting for the crew to board a flight out of KIX and I had a young girl traveling alone so we took her with us behind the check-in counter. A man seemed to be taking way too much interest in her and it made me nervous. Then when we were aboard I saw that he had changed seats to sit next to her. I approached him and asked that he please return to his assigned seat. Before he could respond the young girl said "he is my older brother." I asked to see his passport and sure enough the names matched. Seems dad had one family and then divorced and had another child late in life. I explained my concerns and he was so grateful that I had taken the time and initiative to investigate further. He wrote me a very nice letter thanking me for watching out for his sister.
Never did understand why the parents paid for UM carriage with him on the flight but in his letter he explained that he had changed flights so that he could surprise her. Well, she was not the only one surprised!

Wow. They didn't waste any time hiring a lawyer!
Sad situation. Unfortunately, they will sue AA, not the criminal that actually committed the crime. And AA will probably settle it quickly. Personally, I don't find AA at fault for the creep's actions, but I do think they should be concerned or act when they see a pax intentionally move to sit next to a UM. Not much good can come of that...

Not that the lawyer is signaling anything other than flashing dollar signs and lifelong mental scarring to the press... but there's a chance they hired the lawyer upon reasonable advice.
I'd probably want one in this situation, even if just to handle the press contacts and review everything I'd be expected to sign.

Agree about the lawyer advising and reviewing all the paperwork to sign, but a lawyer would only be needed to handle press contacts if you really wanted to go to the press. The girl's name isn't public, and so there's no reason to have to deal with the press ... unless you wanted to.

AA does have some culpability here. The crew should have ordered the guy to move to another seat when he relocated from his original assigned seat to then sit next to the girl. Instead they suggested he move as there were many other empty seats. He declined. They didn't insist. Then the (alleged) crime happened. The crew were obviously concerned enough in the first place to intervene when he moved but then did not do the right thing.
I fail to see how AA (the crew members) bear no responsibility in this situation. If AA are smart, they will settle this outside of a courtroom very quickly.
