Yes I remember that horrendous 767-200 where they had trouble polishing the bare metal and you saw nothing but uneven polish, scuff and scratches. Don't believe they ever attempted bare metal again.

I didn't see that one, but when AA took over AirCal and stripped the 737-100/200/200QC/300 fleet for the AA livery, they looked like old pots and pans that had been scoured and scraped with giant Brillo pads and putty knives. They painted the BAe-146 fleet white.

As for why it did not become common, I imagine it was upkeep costs. The paint helps protect the airframe underneath and "hand-polishing" an airliner (even with power tools) is a very labor-intensive process so it's expensive and time-consuming.
