WHAT IS THIS REPORT?

Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

For the UA IAH-LHR route frequency cut. It appears that both of the remaining flights have shifted to 777-200's.

Well that stinks. There goes the 787 that was being utilized on this route.

Obviously the cuts at IAH aided the adds at SFO in regards to LHR.

I am thinking this has to be a seasonal. Will be interesting to see if they bring it back for April.

I believe this is a seasonal route that AA runs every winter.

Interesting. pmAA had completely pulled out of ALB and only relaunched ORD after the merger with US brought the ALB station back.

Seems like a bit of re-trenching to their main hubs (exception: PHX). Will be interesting to see where the reported doubling in size over the next 5 years will come from if (*IF*) they are struggling to grow non-DEN/non-LAS routes.

Anyone know how to quote one line? Annoying that the new site quotes the whole post.

Anyway

AA LGA-PBI was the only Florida route out of LGA (beyond MIA) for years. They have flown it seasonal and year round on and off.

It was an MD80 route in the past.

Only way I've figured out is to delete the whole post and delete what I don't want to quote (maybe/hopefully there is a better way?)

In my above reply, where I quoted three lines, I deleted all by the three lines I wanted to quote and then copy/pasted the quote /quote tags to make them individual quotes.

For the UA IAH-LHR route frequency cut. It appears that both of the remaining flights have shifted to 777-200's.

Back around 2010-2012 I had some friends living in Cambridge that I visited a couple of times. At the time this was the exact schedule CO operated: 2x 777-200 daily. CO 34/35 was the earlier flight. CO 4/5 was the later flight.

Some time after the UA merger, the schedule shifted to 3x 763 (3 class version). Then 788s were introduced. Last Sptember we were going to fly to London to see a friend (trip never happened, she got transferred to NYC). At that time it was 1x 763 (two class version) for the earliest flight and 2x 788 for the two later flights.

An interesting note. On my April 2010 trip I was originally scheduled to come back on CO 5 which, for some odd reason, was scheduled to be a 764 that particular day (I believe the day before and after it was scheduled to be a 777-200). Between the time I booked and the day of travel, CO tinkered with the IAH-AMA schedule so I was moved to CO 35. I was a little disappointed because it would have been my first flight on a 764. It wasn't until June 2013 that I finally got to fly on one. I actually got a double dose that trip as my IAH-IAD and IAD-MUC flights were both operated on 764s.

Copy and paste or quoting an entire response and then deleting the excess text are the only two ways I can see. Neither are are as functional as the quote option on the old site and the alternative is definitely not reader-friendly. It's going to be a learning experience for all of us.

IAH losing 1/3 of LHR frequencies and SFO doubling frequency isn't a bad trade-off.

I am thinking this has to be a seasonal. Will be interesting to see if they bring it back for April.

Nope, gone gone.

Seems like a bit of re-trenching to their main hubs (exception: PHX). Will be interesting to see where the reported doubling in size over the next 5 years will come from if (*IF*) they are struggling to grow non-DEN/non-LAS routes.

Plus they have so many fewer gates in DEN now, so they can't grow again to what they were.

In my above reply, where I quoted three lines, I deleted all by the three lines I wanted to quote and then copy/pasted the quote /quote tags to make them individual quotes.

So you hit the quote sign in the main post and then the quote window opens. Then you highlight sections in the bottom quote window and hit the quote again, then it snaps up to the top window where your quote is deposited. Then you have to go back to the lower window to get the next quote and find where you were. All told, it is no more than 8x more time consuming than the old way. I truly hate the quote system which really is the core of the whole website. No idea how this was thought to be an improvement.

It's really amazing the wide body lift that SFO has received in the past year or so. I found it odd that SFO didn't already have 2x LHR service. IAH only really loses approx 100 seats daily to LHR due to the change in gauge .

UA IAH-LHR NOV 3>1.9 DEC 3>2 JAN 3>2 FEB 3>2 MAR 3>2

Sucks to see the 787 go, but it does go back to 2 x 772. Loss of seats and frequency, but an up gauge in equipment. But I wonder why UA is going back to the frequency and aircraft the CO used on this route before the merger? Why not keep a 763 and a 788?

I'd much rather fly between IAH and LHR on a 777 rather than a 763/787. As you say, CO for years operated 2 x 777 flights daily from IAH to LHR and back. The 3 x daily frequency (but smaller on smaller gauge) was put in place once UA and CO merged. I assume they are having problems filling those 100 extra seats per day given the state of the Houston economy. At one time BA was flying 2 x 744 between the two cities. That has now been down gauged to 1 x 777 and 1 x 789. Further evidence of the lift reductions many carriers have made at IAH due to the local economy. I expect further cuts (routes, frequency, and gauge) out of IAH still before the end of the year.

Indeed! How can DL manage 2-class RJ's (and the occasional 717) on DTW-YUL flights but AA cannot do the same from ORD-YUL. Ditto for PHL/CLT-YUL....all CRJ I believe.

Also, AA please bring back the 738 on the DFW-YUL run. I did YUL-DFW yesterday and the aircraft was an E175. OK it does have an F/C cabin but no hot meal and no in-seat power for a 3.5 hour flight.

Finally, what happened to the seasonal 3rd daily frequency on MIA-YUL? Are all these cuts a reflection of the weak Canadian dollar and reduced travel by Canadians to/thru the US?

I had business in that area for a while, and I always found that made more sense to take a nonstop to DTW or YYZ and drive than to connect through ORD, and YKF-CHI isn't a big enough market to fill the airplane on O&D.

It was a particularly bad experience coming back with a wait for the bag either planeside or at baggage claim plus a terminal change at ORD. I wouldn't have tried to do the connection in less than about two hours, even with Global Entry and Precheck.

The shift on IAH-LHR makes perfect sense. CO ran it as such. 2x daily on 777s is the perfect amount of capacity for that market. The 3x daily was overkill even in the best of times.

Finally, what happened to the seasonal 3rd daily frequency on MIA-YUL? Are all these cuts a reflection of the weak Canadian dollar and reduced travel by Canadians to/thru the US?

Just checked today's AA DFW-YYZ: Shocked to see even this route in S80 / E175 when it used to all 738 in the 2000s.

AA LGA-PBI was the only Florida route out of LGA (beyond MIA) for years. They have flown it seasonal and year round on and off.

It was an MD80 route in the past.

It's actually a holdover from the TWA days and was previously seasonally operated by L1011, 727 and MD-80's.

Is this seasonal on AA? I can't find it operating today but there seems to be a daily flight on AA LGA-MCO which is a 738.

Incorrect - AA has been operating LGA-PBI since before it acquired TWA.

Actually IIRC the route was only (re)started a few years ago.

The route has certainly come and gone multiple times (although, to my knowledge, always winter seasonal only). But AA definitely operated it prior to the TWA acquisition. I'm looking at an AA timetable dated 1 February 2000 and AA was running LGA-PBI 2x daily with MD80s - that was nearly a year before the TWA acquisition (10 January 2001).

Assuming NH is chopping one of the NRT flights from ORD, have they stated whether the equipment will remain a 77W for HND?

Does the UNITED trim of IAH-LHR also coincide with Terminal D work? I would think the IAH airport system will be scrambling to find gates for international carriers. One less IAH - LHR gate utilization could be swapped over to a star alliance partner??
Or is that a stretch from the word go?

Interesting, F9 is reducing CLE-ATL and CLE-CUN. They are adding CLE-PHX.
Is F9 now out of DEN-LGA for good?

UA is clearly increasing IAD to points in the Caribbean.

The irony, 2 777's a day is what CO had pre merger. It makes sense. 3 flights a day in this environment is too much. I guess these 2 flights won't have global first.

Interesting comparison for DL on these winter-seasonal routes out of MSP. Is CZM, LIR, MZT, and NAS performing well during this timeframe?

Also interesting to see F9 cut DEN-MSP so much. They have so often been 3-4x daily. Must be feeling the competition with 6 carriers on the route now.

For some off the ones you starred it seems that they are just being loaded in to the system for NOV and DEC.

DEN will always be their main hub so them adjusting the routes not a big surprise. PHX isn't that big of a build up but it is good to see F9 add flights.

There are three cities I see F9 building up over the next few years: MCO, LAS, and PHX. It would be nice to see them continue to build up PHL and to take advantage of PIT.

F9 needs to start growing flights into the Caribbean, Central America, and Northern South America. They could use PHX and MCO as good connecting points. Adding those international flights while growing their domestic operations should get them to double the size in five years.

The opposite, they are returning to the market according to this update.

I think PHX is flavor of the month. Other carrier hubs seem to come and go for them. They only have long term traction in DEN, MCO, LAS, and ORD to some extent.

That would be a U-Turn. They've been exiting international.

The flavor of the month must be good for them to add some more flights. As for ORD having long term traction, they seem to be in the same boat as PHX. We will have to see how they are both doing in SEP/OCT.

Well Cuba is international and they are adding flights there so it is a U-Turn no matter what at this point. F9 has made a lot of U-Turns over the last few years so it is only a matter of time on the international routes.

PHX, ORD, and DEN are all multi-carrier hubs which may be a factor in their success, in that when there are multiple carriers it requires both be of like mind in terms of how they deal with F9. For example, if Hub carrier A lowers fares to match F9 and Hub carrier B doesn't, it may cause carrier B to retaliate against carrier A to undo the fare cut. That all helps F9.

Agreed on Cuba, but Cuba basically redefines *unique situation*. It is a limited time opportunity and to them it probably looks a lot like CUN which they have been in for a while. I don't think they will be flying to any destinations in Central or South America or even the Caribbean any time soon. From what I see they have no interest. Cuba is just something special, although I question whether they will even fly this non-HAV stuff. It will be a disaster for everybody except maybe Silver.

And fly PHL-PIT. :D And maybe LAS-PHX which has high leaning fares for short service, especially within a two weeks out period.

But it seems on the MCO side strange that F9 isn't keeping TTN-MCO solidly with atleast two daily flights. I see some days like Thu 2/23 with only one flight. Also, it's strange that TTN-TPA and TTN-FLL have lighter schedules than TTN-PBI, even though PBI is more a secondary market. If F9 can get a gate at EWR, I don't think TTN will have much staying potential in the F9 network.

Also, it's odd that IAD-MCO fares are full Y at $452 one-way all through January and February, and that November and December are less than daily when Orlando demand should accommodate daily service. Demand is best starting in March when the days become longer, but a lot of leisure passengers have vacation time they use by the end of the year, combining it with holiday time.

There are three cities I see F9 building up over the next few years: MCO, LAS, and PHX. It would be nice to see them continue to build up PHL and to take advantage of PIT.

And fly PHL-PIT. :D

So far the ULCC bag model has not worked in short-haul. The fee gets to be much more than the fare.
phluser wrote:
And maybe LAS-PHX which has high leaning fares for short service, especially within a two weeks out period.

Only the A319 can operate at TTN and F9 is retiring them, so that points them towards leaving TTN. NK now has 319s, however. ;)

Yes it is a unique situation but I see them expanding international flights.

There was an interview with the F9 CEO and ACAA CEO and that route was slightly hinted at.

Frontier has flown A320's into TTN from time to time, and they aren't getting rid of all the A319's. Eventually the old ones will all go, of course, as they are replaced by A319Neo, of which they have 18 on order.

A320 at TTN:

For the UA IAH-LHR route frequency cut. It appears that both of the remaining flights have shifted to 777-200's.

Just joining the ranks of IAD and LAX in that regard.

IIRC this was the only remaining UA 787 route into LHR.

Btw, I see it more of a shift since SFO seems to have picked up the extra frequency.

IAH losing 1/3 of LHR frequencies and SFO doubling frequency isn't a bad trade-off.

That's the spirit.

It's really amazing the wide body lift that SFO has received in the past year or so. I found it odd that SFO didn't already have 2x LHR service.

UA neglected West Coast - Europe for some time, not least because *A partner LH Group expanded quite a bit in that market. It probably would have been easier to do twice daily with a 777 to LHR had BMI still been around.

Or is that a stretch from the word go?

I don't recall *A partners using UA gates (Terminal C/E) in IAH, unlike say at ORD. I also don't know which *A partner would realistically fly IAH-LHR, outside of something like LH380 to FRA and then LH to LHR.

With the local downturn in IAH, it has got to be one of the best times to do construction in IAH, hopefully they'll be able to fast track construction there. Terminal D is a disgrace when it's full and a cemetery when it's not. Hopefully the new int'l terminal will be a lot like TBIT at LAX. It's nice to see UA embracing it for int'l flights once it's opened.

Once you're in the "Post a Reply" screen, you can go through the "Topic Review" at the bottom, highlight individual sections of text just as you would have done on the old site, and click the quote button in the upper right corner of the relevant post in order to quote that poster. The caveat is the same as in the old site -- you have to click the correct quote button...

Well, more that it becomes a lot easier for the legacies or standard LCCs (i.e. B6/WN) to price at a point that's below the ULCC fare+fee point. Not just that, but a big chunk of short-haul travel tends to be done by frequent flyers on a route and by people on relatively short trips. The frequent flyers either shun the ULCC product or figure out how to minimize the fee impact while someone on a day/overnight/weekend trip might only take a briefcase or backpack, thus avoiding all the bag fees.

Interesting comparison for DL on these winter-seasonal routes out of MSP. Is CZM, LIR, MZT, and NAS performing well during this timeframe?

They're all routes operated by SY. It's part of the NWA mentality of sitting on the competition.

That's a complete stretch. The downturn in petroleum takes a lot of pressure off Terminal D in the short term, and UA can operate international departures from any of its gates. Moreover, the construction of the new C-North is really Phase 0 of the new Terminal D project -- it allows for the existing C-North to be demolished/reconstructed as new gates in Terminal D. Subsequently, the current Terminal D can be replaced on the current footprint.

Secondary Canada is all but dead for the U.S. carriers.

Canadian point-of-sale goes overwhelmingly to the Canadian carriers, and the smaller markets like YKF are on the radar of very, very few Americans. It probably doesn't help YKF that BBRY basically imploded over the last seven or eight years.

There's really no reason to be at TTN unless they can achieve a RASM premium over PHL/EWR or operate significantly more cheaply.

Good for LIT. Seems like DL has really gained with the WN drawdown over the last few years.

Thanks for the tip. Greatly appreciated.

Now, about the VX DAL flights. Anyone know what's going on there?

The quote system is so awful I keep pondering leaving the site. Plus, I've had to sign in like 18 times today and navigate back to where I was.

I don't *know*, but it seems fairly obvious they have a deal with somebody, and it kinda has to be DL.

I haven't been keeping detailed tabs on the DAL issue, but I'd think any deal that VX has with DL at DAL has its days numbered with the AS/VX pending tie up.
And no please don't leave! These updates are much appreciated :D .

Sucks to see the 787 go, but it does go back to 2 x 772. Loss of seats and frequency, but an up gauge in equipment. But I wonder why UA is going back to the frequency and aircraft the CO used on this route before the merger? Why not keep a 763 and a 788?

Here is a direct quote from Flying Together on this topic.
"We have been working closely with the regulators regarding service between the U.S. and U.K. for more than 25 years, and we are committed to continuing that work to provide great service to our customers," said Regulatory and Policy VP Steve Morrissey.

As we do with every market we serve, we will continue to monitor demand closely. In fact, we had been planning for some time to increase the frequency of flights between LHR (London Heathrow) and both SFO and LAX in the coming months with Boeing 787 aircraft, and those schedule changes will load on Saturday. For winter 2016-17, we will operate a second daily SFO-LHR nonstop, effective Oct. 29, 2016 (eastbound). For summer 2017, we will add a second daily LAX-LHR flight, effective April 4, 2017 (eastbound).

In concert with increasing SFO and LAX services, we decided some time ago to reduce the number of daily nonstop flights from LHR to IAH from three to two, effective Oct. 30, 2016. We will operate both IAH flights with larger Boeing 777-200 aircraft, replacing smaller 767 and 787s that used to operate on the routes.

This will maintain total United daily departures from LHR to the U.S. at 17 for summer 2017."

In the past UA has operated daily double service on the SFO-LHR route from mid spring to mid fall, now that route will operate daily double year around. The third IAH-LHR slot will be moved to LAX and starting mid spring of 2017 LAX-LHR will go daily double probably from mid spring to early or mid fall. I'm not sure how this additional LAX-LHR flight was missed but both the the IAH cut, the additional SFO and additional (probably seasonal) LAX nonstop flight are loaded and are open for sale.

UA trims IAH-LHR is mentioned in the topic but somehow and additional LAX-LHR flight is completely missed
