Iberia and China Eastern start non-stop service same day June 28, 2016 between Madrid , Spain and Shanghai, China. Both airlines will use airbus 330-200 to service the route.
This new route is expected to be a success as tourism between China and Spain is growing very fast as well as business ties between Spain and China has been growing .
As a proof to this , Cathay Pacific that started non-stop flights Madrid-Hong Kong early this month of June is enjoying great loads.
Also Iberia Airlines which is planning to restart non-stop Madrid-Tokyo flights in October this year is having great bookings.
These flights join the existing Air China, Korean Airlines and Hainan Airlines that are currently serving Madrid.
It seems like Madrid-Far East flights are going through good times. I hope these flights do very well and others follow.

Madrid to Asia has improved recently.
It will now have direct non-stop flights to PEK, PVG, HKG, HGH, NRT and ICN (until recently via AMS) in the Far East, and DXB, DOH, AUH, JED-RUH (until recently via MXP) in the Gulf. In addition to the likes of TLV, AMM, CAI, IST and SAW in the Levant.
It makes me wonder why SQ does not move their BCN flight to MAD. BCN has now lost the GRU tag and the flight to SIN is via MXP which is woefully uncompetitive to the ME3, TK or CX.

This is a good question SCQ83 , Singapore Airlines used to serve Madrid a few years back...
I have been asking the same to myself, since Singapore Airlines started flights to Barcelona.
It should be the right thing to do to extend the Barcelona flights to Madrid.
I hope we soon start seeing Singapore Airlines serving Madrid again. I am sure Madrid can fill some of the airplane seats and it can be a great tag to the Barcelona flights.

Initially the flight SIN-BCN-GRU was a deal with JK, but shortly after that JK cease operations, so no hub in BCN for JK any more, that's one of the reasons they start the BCN routes, also I don't think SQ could have had the route to GRU in MAD, but I agree that now SQ could consider moving to MAD.
It seems that the PVG is the real deal in the chinese market because they both start at the same time, but I think IB will do PEK in the future also, now CX, partner in Oneworld just started HKG-MAD.

Madrid -Shanghai : Iberia ( 3 x ) and China Eastern , I think (4 X)
As far as Thai, I think they will resume Madrid some time soon. they left because Thai needed some reorganization...Thai said when they will eventually come back .
As far as Singapore Airlines, I will see them coming back to Madrid in 2017 or 2018 as a tag to the Barcelona flights. ( This is my opinion)
About North America, I foresee Madrid-San Francisco starting in 2017 and may be Houston...Flights between Madrid and the United States have been growing quite fast and of course, the demand and the potential are there.

Madrid airport has plenty of room to grow...It is a huge airport with 4 active runways..and Madrid T-4 and T-4S are a gigantic and state of the art facilities.
Glad to see Iberia and other airlines expanding into Madrid's.
By the way Air Europa just started daily non-stop Boeing 787 service Madrid- Bogota also yesterday .

China Eastern announced 1 week after the start of the route that it will go from 4 weekly to daily from August 10 for the rest of the peak summer time. So MAD-PVG will be 10 weekly.

China Eastern between Late-July and mid-September is boosting operations on its recently added Shanghai Pu Dong – Madrid route, where it’ll operate up to daily service, increase from current 4 weekly (Day x135). From 23JUL16, the airline will add 5th weekly flight (Day 5), followed by 6th weekly (Day 1) from 01AUG16 and 7th weekly (Day 3) from 10AUG16. The daily operation is in effect until 18SEP16.
