Article Editors Required

Wed Jun 29, 2016 12:23 am

Hello All

As a part of the recent upgrade to the site we're now looking for article editors to provide content such as featured articles for the site and featured Blogs. As an editor you would be expected to have a strong knowledge of aviation and be able to write about a variety of topics. That may be anything from why delays happen due to a thunderstorm to a day in the life of a pilot.

As you can see we require diversity for our community and the right candidates will be chosen on merit alone. Feel free to apply by writing to [email protected] with at least 2 samples of your work for us to review whether you will qualify for a ro le.

We look forward to hearing from candidates and payment details per article will be discussed once you're successful as it is not a volunteer role.

This post is ambiguous. Are you looking for article "editors" or article "authors"? You say editors but the rest of the post reads like you are after authors, please clarify as they are quite different roles with different skill sets.

You state you require diversity, but then you state the right candidate will be chosen based on merit alone...But which one is it? If the most meritorious candidate doesn't happen to fit your definition of "diverse", do you fall back to a lesser-qualified candidate to maintain your required level of "diversity"?

I think it would be fair to at least post here a rough idea of what to expect for a payment, lest you risk the most meritorious...err...diverse (whatever) candidates from even bothering to apply.

I think we are seeing Demand Media further implementing their buisness model into A-net. The following description comes from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demand_Media:
Demand Media executives say their websites are content-driven to attract visitors by showing up in multiword search-engine queries. The more words that are typed into a search engine, the more specific the search will be. This is called "the long tail"[37] search. Demand Media attempts to get visitors to its websites with these long-tail searches. It then tries to retain visitors with related content and social media tools...

...Content is generated via a process in which Demand Media uses algorithms to generate titles, then posts the titles to a screened pool of freelance writers or video creators. The list of available titles used to be over 100,000 but was severely curtailed in the second half of 2011. Typically, writers can claim up to ten titles and then have a week to submit the articles. Format and length are dictated by guidelines. Submitted articles go to an editor (also a freelancer) who can either clean it up or request a rewrite. After writers submit a revised article it is either accepted or rejected. Payment via PayPal is twice a week...

As the sentence proceeding the diversity sentence states, they're looking for a diverse set of topics – not every article can be about a day in the life of a pilot. There's gotta be a diverse set of topics covered to meet this site's diverse set of interests.

How does one go about finding "articles" under the new format? The old system of drop down menus was pretty comprehensive in permitting one to access all parts of the website. Using my PC I see only "photos" and "forums" as menus. I can't find "articles".

Probably because there aren't any articles yet. That's why they are looking for people to write them.

Peeking into the code of the site, I suspect "Top 100" becomes "News" when there are writers to write the news.

FYI, for those interested in remuneration, it's pretty straightforward to google "demand media payment" and find several articles detailing how much one can expect per article.

How about bringing this website back to a user friendly and much better website to navigate and use before trying to find article editors.
The website was not broken, but it sure is now. Somethings are better left alone and this was one of them….
